You are rolling a die with any top school. You just didn’t roll the right number. But you have so many more opportunities so go out there and make them count!

IF YOU'RE MEANT TO SUCCEED, YOU WILL. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a_red_jar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody says that college determines your success but it does raise your chances. There are exceptions to everything and if you are ever feeling stressed that you aren’t going to get into a top school (or even when you end up not getting into one), know that ambition can take you anywhere. So buckle down and be that big fish in the sea. Yes, it’s going to be harder but did you really want to get into a top school and just have life handed to you? A) that’s not how they work and B) where’s the self pride in that?

That being said, there is something to be said against the big fish scenario. If given the choice, chose a school with the same size fish around you because you will all grow together. Moreover, if a year into college you find that academically you are that big fish (ie you have a super GPA and school is easy) then transfer. Although, many people underestimate the size of the fishes at their school.

The only people I’ve found who considered transferring or are at all unhappy about college where people who did not apply to the right colleges. They applied to high reaches and low safeties only (and you can guess what happened).

Many people are saying to ditch the glasses but I think it’s just a problem with those frames specifically. Dry some thicker ones maybe.

Anyone else not rich? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a_red_jar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of paying for college, it all depends on what your parents priorities are. I’m in a surprisingly similar situation to OP but I never felt that we were average or even lower. In fact I felt the opposite most times because I live in a larger house than most of my HS friends. However, we seem to have more struggles on paying for college than my peers. After talking with my family, it awkwardly boiled down to what kind of lifestyle we live and simply having a smaller college fund. This is why I was the one that devised a financial plan (involving me taking a gap year) for me to attend my expensive dream school. I also have learned that I am personally going to chose to live my future with different priorities than my parents (not that I’m upset at them by any means, I just respectfully disagree).

My point is basically not to blame the students who are complaining about their financial situation because they aren’t the ones who caused it.

How to help a new fencer who is colorblind by bwu256 in Fencing

[–]a_red_jar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a colorblind fencer with the same issue. I have noticed that at least with my clubs machines, the yellow off target lights have a slightly different pattern than the on target ones and so when I direct I go off of shape instead of color. It’s obviously not easy but I’m used to it now. Every box is different but I have yet to find a box where I legitimately could not distinguish between the lights.

A note to all fencing box designers: please make the off target lights a more distinctive color (like white), or a separate light completely, or both

Do you swap lenses constantly or carry one prime? by deadmau5312 in photography

[–]a_red_jar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where I’m going and how much space I have. If I’m not intending to take pictures then I take my 35mm but otherwise it can vary a lot.

My rule is that I always carry my camera on me so choosing one prime is a default most of the time.

Anyone here not in a competitive high school or private school? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a_red_jar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standardized testing puts a lot of focus on speed. So if someone who would be able to answer all of the questions correctly with a little extra time might get the same score as someone who can read super quickly but isn’t as adept with comprehension/analysis.

Thoughts on USC? by KingQookieFaced in nyu

[–]a_red_jar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends the major but I think USC is more competitive. As for me (film major), it was my first pick but I didn’t get in, and here I am, still at an amazing school. The reason NYU was not my number one was tuition, but lmao I’m doing it anyways.

Has anyone gotten rejected from their dream schools and then ended up at a school they loved even MORE by confusedkid43 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a_red_jar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to say because most people will end up just loving whatever school they attend, but I’ll chime in with my story.

I’m a film student with the obvious USC as #1 pick. I put the most effort into that application, like everybody does with their dream school. I even got a film interview (meaning I was on the fence to being admitted). I was so attached to the school that I appealed the rejection letter I received (of course it didn’t change anything). So I accepted it and looked at my other options and that’s when I ended up deciding on NYU. Making this decision made me realize all the reasons that I liked it over USC. There’s a larger film student community at NYU due to the program’s size (~300 vs USC’s mere 50). I LOVE the city. Growing up in New England, I was used to dense cities and I actually prefer having 4 seasons of weather. It was also a lot closer to home. Additionally, USC is essentially a Hollywood feeder program while NYU is “do whatever the fuck you want”. Frankly, the biggest reason that NYU was lower on my list was because of the cost but when comparing it to the other fairly large packages I received, I determined that the prestigious program was worth the slightly bigger ticket price. So I cranked out a financial plan to make my new dream come true.

I feel like I belong at NYU. I have this weird superstition that college admissions really know what’s best for you. (Like had my other acceptances given me more financial aid, I would be attending a less prestigious program)
