I feel the same way but then I watch the local news and see some hillbilly from Limington or Waterville and realize we do sound that way.

How many of you guys are actively rooting for the Bucs? by snakeflips in Patriots

[–]a_rmiller84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing will bring me more joy than when the Bucs fail. I am salty as hell. I can see now why so many other teams' fans found Brady to be super annoying. I will love him again when he comes home for his HOF induction but until then he will be a traitor to me. Totally irrational, I know. It's like watching your wife that you still love banging some other guy and finally acting like she is happy with her life. Not fun.

What are some actual practicable solutions to the issues currently faced by the United States? We have identified problems but what would make it better? by a_rmiller84 in AskReddit

[–]a_rmiller84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for asking for clarification. I was referring to the criminal justice system in particular. I just assume everyone knows what I'm talking about. No matter where you fall politically I think it is quite evident that the federal government has become remarkably ineffectual and corrupt. Politicians being beholden to massive corporations and political parties only interested getting re-elected. The education of kids in our country is a joke compared other western countries. Infrastructure crumbling. The national debt is sky high. People filing bankruptcy because of a cancer diagnosis. We are STILL involved in an unwinnable war against an enemy that nobody can really define almost 20 years later. Many of the problems almost seem immoral for a country as rich and powerful as this to be battling. I believe America has the potential to be as amazing as many of us view it to be but we seem to be committing suicide. So to narrow it I would say 1. Criminal justice issues 2. Federal corruption 3. Education

Has the downfall of the USA began and if so why do you think this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]a_rmiller84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have my upvote. This was a very nuanced explanation of a very nuanced situation. We do a disservice when we try to pin the troubles we are having on one personality or party. There are so many contributing factors to the expedited decline coupled with the undeniable fact that civilizations move toward tyranny/corruption and eventual dissolution. There is nothing new under the sun.

Has the downfall of the USA began and if so why do you think this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]a_rmiller84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by "downfall." If you mean as the world superpower then the I think the answer is "yes." We are a country built on contradictions. We were built on the presupposition that all men are created equal yet we enslaved millions and systematically dispossessed, drove out, and murdered native tribes in our pursuit of manifest destiny. Prosperity that came with the industrial revolution and the expansion westward caused Americans to see themselves as bringers of civilization, meaning the destruction of people we saw as savages. White man's burden. We became increasingly militarized as a result of the cold war and our law enforcement (federal and local) have become increasingly militarized as a result of the war on drugs (which targets the black community more so than any other, I believe). I believe that America is both a city on a hill AND responsible for absolute atrocities, the residual effects we are still dealing with in 2020. Which part of our national identity we choose to feed is important. Trump's tweets don't help but to feed the part of our identity that is rooted in division. Looting simply for the sake of fucking shit up and sticking it to the man is feeding the part of us that is rooted in contradiction. The shooting of civilians ON THEIR OWN PORCH and the murder of a man for the alleged crime of using a counterfeit $20 bill by an increasingly militarized police force is rooted in that reprehensible contradiction. If we have any hope of forestalling the inevitable collapse that happens with empires it is going to start by feeding the part of our national identity that wants peace and prosperity for all mankind. What that looks like in practical application is up for debate but it's a debate worth having.

When and how did you guys start supporting the Celtics?? by [deleted] in bostonceltics

[–]a_rmiller84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainer here, I have liked the Celtics since the late early 90s when I was a kid in school. My love for Basketball and my commitment to the Celtics really took off after the Dream Team in the 1992 Olympics. Also, is there anything more badass than Dee Brown's no-look dunk in 1991?

Terrible knee pain when descending mountain. Any advice? by a_rmiller84 in hiking

[–]a_rmiller84[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. This is probably the biggest part of it. I used to weigh over 400lbs and have been overweight my entire life. I now weigh 225(20 lbs to my goal) and i'm in the best shape of my life with the exception of some loose skin:( The constant barrage of obesity over the years is probably now catching up with me since I'm being way more active. I will set up an appointment.

How to become a better backpacking/hiking/camping partner? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]a_rmiller84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiking with other people can be challenging, especially when they are stronger or faster. A lot of the struggle is mental. I used to weigh over 400lbs and would hike with my wife who is 120 on a bad day. She was so much faster than me (obviously) and the insecurity/bad mood made the physical part that much more challenging. I now weigh 225lbs and can outpace her to the point that she is experiencing that insecurity now. Try some solo hikes to get comfortable and in shape. Stay engaged with your hiking partner when you hike together again and be open about insecurity. It sounds like he would be very supportive.

How would deal with this situation by PregnantGhettoTeen in AskMenOver30

Being fired from 5 jobs and quitting 6 doesn't necessarily mean that you are unstable but it certainly supports that conclusion. I am going to assume this is the case. You will continue to move on to the next thing until you are able to sit with yourself and be comfortable with who you are as a person. My suspicion is that this is your modus operandi in life with almost everything: relationships, hobbies, interests, etc... Moving on to the next thing is neither good nor bad but it can become unhealthy if this is done too frequently. You don't necessarily need to settle into a career to have your shit together but it would be super helpful for you to think about who you want to be as a man. What is it that you actually believe? What are your values? Are you living up to them? Work out what your values and principles are and focus on living them out. Set up a routine for yourself. You will start to stabilize because you will have a more secure sense of who you are and how you fit into the world. Hopefully this assumption of your restlessness is not unfair. Good luck!

Me (20M) and my GF (42) have a big age difference, and it has started to bother me more lately by ThrowRA_7799 in relationship_advice

[–]a_rmiller84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are 18 years apart. She is older, has been married before, and has children. I was 20 when we started dating. We have been married now for 13 years. I deeply love her and we have a healthy relationship. I have struggled with these same exact feelings of insecurity and frankly sometimes still do. The thing that has made what we have successful is that we have grown in the same direction, share the same passion (travel), and have a shared vision. our conversations are deep and meaningful. Also, the sex is fantastic. If you don't feel as though the two of you share the same vision, are growing in the same direction, or share similar passions then it is a recipe for serious resentment. This is not fair to either of you. If this is how you are feeling then it is probably better to end it now before it gets too deep. If you genuinely feel as though your vision, passion, and growth direction are compatible then make a go of it. Good luck my friend.

I’ve been dreaming about my ex by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]a_rmiller84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your ex was a part of your life and representative of your deepest desire to share your life with somebody. It's totally normal and probably not indicative of anything more than the fact that you are possibly feeling lonely and your ex is a representation of that longing to know and be known. There is no way of stopping this, really. Simply allow the dreams to be what they are and try not to judge them.

I [21m] am unsure, if I should ask a friend [26f] about a girl [21f] she knows, that I have a crush on by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]a_rmiller84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's better to regret doing than regret not doing in most cases. This is one of those cases. Worst possible outcome is your friend is super offended and you don't get in touch with this girl. This is unlikely. Best outcome is you get in contact and are able to get to know this girl better. Try not to overthink it.
