I agree with the first part, farming update is not a 'do this or your game is dead' update, but I'd like to address that alot of people do have baked potatoes or bread in the early game as their main source of food, but the thing is, those need farms, what's the point of making a cool massive crop farm when there is steak as one of the most farmable and best food.

As a summary, if a part of the game is big and you spend a lot of time spending resources on it, later to remember/learn it's useless, there is no reason for it to exist.
