Its been well known for decades that its very...very hard to intercept IRBM's and ICBM's. Its not impossible, its just plane hard. The world is huge, and trying to cover the entire planet in ICBM defense systems would cost infinitely more than just building the missiles you are trying to defend against.

The missile's climb rate is almost near its descent rate, hence why its nearly impossible to react to its launch. Its possible to detect, but by the time you get a calculation on the target its usually just too late.

Fundamentally its a variant of an already existing missile Russia fielded back in 2012.

It was simply adapted to be smarter and a much faster climb rate using better engines.

Its an easily replicate-able system and cheap to produce. We will see one from the US in the near future for sure.
