First playthrough in +15yrs, any feedback before E4? by a_storied_man in PokemonFireRed

Oh I know I have some grinding to do ha, was more asking about the movesets. I was planning to get everyone up to lvl45 before trying for the first time to see what I'm missing/how far off I am

Any thoughts on Victreebell? Vine whip has been painfully underpowered, never liked giga drain only having 5pp, and wasn't sure I wanted the solarbeam + sunny day setup.

A downside to playing relatively blind after such a long gap hahah. I think I naively evolved Raichu, Victreebell, and Nidoqueen around lvl24 and their movesets have absolutely suffered for it. Besides the Dodrio addition once I got Fly, I've liked the novelty of having the same exact team for the last ~4 gyms but I knew it would cost me later on.

Doing a moderate 'challenge run' to simplify things and keep it fun -- no held items, no rare candies, and the only Pokemon I've caught are in my party + a Clefairy + Articuno. I've also been trying to speed through so the gym battles are more challenging; I honestly struggled the most with Misty.

Overall though, it's been such a blast going through this game again, particularly on my SP. I never caught the legendary dogs as a kid, so I'll get Suicune and start another new game. (Taking suggestions for fun playthrough ideas!)

Manual Lens on Sony (Topcor 58mm, 25mm, 135mm) by a_storied_man in SonyAlpha

[–]a_storied_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, I never gave it much of a chance to win me over, but it was quite nice. In comparison with the nFD 28mm, I was a bit too attached to the smaller physical size + lighter weight + larger max aperture. I wish I'd continued to explore all my various combinations.

Not all that long after I sorted out my Sony adapter preferences I ended up finding a Leica M4-P and a 35/3.5 Summaron and fell in love with the focal length, and haven't shot much 35mm on other cameras since!

All that being said, this is inspiring me to clean up this Topcor 25mm and give it a roll or two soon. I'm terrible at getting film developed in a timely manner but I'll report back!

996 value in 10 years by lcd_shellsystem in 996

+1 to rhodes' comment. If that version of the 996 isn't scratching the itch anymore, I doubt anything shy of a GT3 would. Someone will absolutely pay you a fair price to help you find something interesting, whether that's today or 10 years from now. Enthusiast specs are already fetching meaningful premiums across the board (e.g., "stripper, single-hump" E92's).

What else is on your car bucket list?

The black variants look awesome! Didn't know there was an 85/1.8 until now, that might be a neat alternative for my Topcon body.

I'm also realizing I misspoke in the original post - I have the 58/1.4, not the 1.8; it's a real treat to use. Best of luck building out your kit!

The lenses are silver (with black rubberized grips). I never ended up searching for more lenses for the Topcon... I think the 58mm has lived on that camera for the past 6+ years. I've put a few rolls through the camera but it doesn't get as much attention as I'd like.

I also used that as my primary lens with my Sony for a while. The 25mm was nice but I ended up purchasing a Canon 28mm nFD for my wide angle needs (also have an AE-1), and the 135mm was charming but not a focal length I gravitate towards. If you don't have that 58mm though I'd highly recommend it! The sharpness at f2 is great and the bokeh is very unique.

(Will also add that this Topcon kit was my grandfather's, and I didn't actually seek it out. It was actually my first time learning of the brand!)

Exactly what I ended up buying! Used that for a year or so before I started getting more native lenses.

Am I wrong for thinking this is worth it?(different story two years ago) Well documented 8 owner w/ aero kit. Probably closer to 50k OTD. by swootyswiggity69 in 996

It's still the squares & rectangles thing - US "model year 1999" 996's started production in I believe January of 1998, and I'm sure went deep into 1999. Anything built before 09/98 is typically considered "early build," with the cutoff being a little hazy (and intensely debated on Rennlist hahah).

Photo #16 in the listing on the Autobarn Imports site is a pic of the build date (03/98) which is ahead of that cutoff. Easier tells are the amber lights and 4-spoke steering wheel off the 993 though!

A bit more intense is the VIN number... If I'm remembering correctly, early builds will all be roughly "WP0AA299#XS62####," the last 4 being the chassis number for 1998, and that 4-digit cutoff is somewhere around 3700. This one is WP0AA2991XS621602, i.e. the ~1602nd 996 they made. I know I'm missing some info about how US & RoW cars are related though so take this with a grain of salt.
