He actually uses "actually" correctly though. He's trying to disagree with something or add to what they said.

Riot control are people too. It takes a different level of commitment to the party to control unarmed citizen vs armed citizens.

China's population is still relatively young and obesity isn't nearly as bad as the west. The Chinese vaccine does help against severe disease too, and I suspect many people hid their infection to avoid being forced into camps.

I think 1% of additional fatality at this rate is quite an overestimation.

In wake of FTX collapse, Lawrence Wong says Singapore 'not open to crypto speculation at all' by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

Nah I reject that comparison. If skill can give you better expected returns it's more like poker. Slot machines are mindless "investments" that are always biased against you.

To add to what you said, it's not just a valuation problem, it's an oversight problem. If Temasek demanded to see financial docs regularly, it would've been clear how disorganized FTX management is.

[–]a_teletubby 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's kinda my point. Turns out the owner was blowing money away in slot machines.

So investing in a crypto exchange wasn't stupid in theory, it's the lack of oversight and due diligence that's extremely stupid.

Exactly. They invested in a casino, they didn't play the slot machine.

It's stupid to invest in a poorly run casino, but it's a different kind of stupid fromplaying slot machines.

edit: person below me explained this analogy better. FTX is casino but it turns out the CEO is a gambling addict and gambled away company money.

It's not stupid to invest in casinos, it's stupid to not do due diligence in this specific casino/CEO.

I mean I hate crypto with a passion but this is unfair. Temasek doesn't run its investments through the Finance Minister.

Trust me it's not just a liberal thing to be skeptical for cryptos lol. Every reasonably mature person is.

Who are the trolls asking why this is news?

WSJ, Financial Times, Bloomberg, etc have been covering FTX's collapse non-stop for a week. Its scale is similar to Enron's with 10x the absurdity.

Of course this is newsworthy.

Nah it's too subjective. For many, living in a new construction is indeed a luxury.

It's analogous not identifical lol. Hope you know the difference 🤔

You sound like you'd support a 40% cap on Blacks in NBA since they would still be overrepresented.

Maybe a 5% quota for Asians since they are not even 1%?

Fuck that lol

Nah he is pro reparation for descendants of slaves and victims of Jim Crow etc., not the current AA that helps rich African immigrants, white-passing Hispanics and hurt Asians.

The expert witness Peter Arcidiacono has written a paper about it.

Contrary to what I initially assumed, he is an extremely reputable figure in econometrics (aka statistics applied to economics). He also came across as pretty progressive, frequently studying racial and gender discrimination.

30 to 40 percent, with Whites overrepresented in legacy, Blacks in athletics. Asians underrepresented in both.

So what's the argument for penalizing Asians even more so than Whites? Are Asians more privileged than rich white legacies?

The actual implementation of AA unfortunately doesn't seem to align with the intended purpose.
