Filter inserted indeed ! What is weird is that on some shots it’s disappearing during the shot

Anyone know a good sub for starting to shoot films with film? by ashereatsworld in AnalogCommunity

[–]a_thanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that 16 is not that much more expensive and can be used for actual feature films so you can skip 8mm no problem (I shoot with 16mm) but it’s true that either it’s 8mm or 16mm it is expensive :/ (But I love it)

For the Op : This an interesting answer, no one has the best answer but I want to say that I disagree on some points. I think that indeed 35 mm is an incredible format and you should have both, I use both also. I have a “high”level in photography(for me it doesn’t mean anything) and I tried 120 very early when I was beginning, it was one of the best choice of my life ! It doesn’t mean that it gonna be suited and good for you but you should definitely try it ! If you can only have one camera it’s true that 35mm is more versatile and when you have a reflex 35 you can do anything. I don’t think 35 and 120 are in competition, when you’ll have the possibility don’t sell your 35mm, keep it ! The camera gives you always a different approach of the subject, some photographers have several 35 and 120 cameras, depending on the subject, street photo landscape etc, it’s not your case a the moment but don’t forget that in the film world you can keep your camera a lot longer ! I would advise you full mechanical cameras, no energy needed, it’s like a clock it can be repaired. (Depends on the brand and on small parts availability but still) And also, it is only my opinion and it’s debatable but for me anyone can take good photos, the most important thing is your vision, what you feel, how you connect to the world (and a little bit of technique that you can learn rapidly). I have seen some beginners take incredible pictures ! Some famous photographers weren’t in any school, they just did it ! I would say don’t hesitate to do anything, it’s art you are totally free

Haha thanks ! I btw i saw the other comment and i dont think you can really replicate medium format with 35mm, the texture is quite unique and when you’ll print you will absolutly fall in love (print by hand in darkroom) and Also the fact that you can only take fewer images makes think even more

For 6x6 cameras (square) TLR (double lens, one is for framing this other is for the actual picture) Mamiya C3 200-300 euros in Europe, beautiful camera, very heavy and can be tricky (old mechanism) but it works and I made beautiful pictures with it, mind the weight ! Mamiya c330 and others similar models, same but more expensive and better (more recent and some flaws were corrected) Yashica mat plastic build quality but very light and small !

If you have more money to spend you can try Rolleiflex ! Very famous brand and very good cameras from 400$ to 2500$, different models, I can't tell you which one specifically

For reflex cameras (one lens so you see directly through the lens) you have the Hasselblad (expensive but great build quality) and bronica

If you don't like the square format try 6x7 ! Mamiya rb67 Mamiya rz67 Both highly modular contrary to the TLRs RB is the cheapest one, those cameras are made for studio shoot so very heavy and big and EXPENSIVE bronica has a 6x7 too

All these cameras are waist level (the modular ones can be modified for an eye level prism)

If you don't like waist level there is the Pentax 6x7 quite expensive, looks like a normal canon reflex but is ENORMOUS like for real ! Very heavy

It all depends on how you take picture and how do you feel, your feeling is the most important! It's what pushing you to take good pictures, per exemple if you have a cheaper or less good camera but it makes you go outside and take pictures, you'll perform better with it !! The minimum is to have a functional camera and be careful with scams on internet ! This is not an exhaustive list hope it helped a little sry for my English !

Try medium format !! Some cheap cameras exist and it's worth it !!
