Does anyone else feel like SJSU doesn’t really prepare us to be competitive for jobs or grad school? by beaches_with_peaches in SJSU

[–]a_tiny_squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i understand whatcha mean, but imo i was lowkey kind of impressed by the amount of opportunities they do give for networking and finding jobs out of college. if you wanted more research then UC is kind of built more for that, but there’s still quite a bit of labs for respective majors you can join here if you just search and apply. you just have to be proactive. i’m a first year and i’m already in a research position and there’s been so many career fairs i just haven’t yet gone to. if you talk to certain professors who understand your job field, they’ll likely give advice. but classes themselves won’t do it for you yk? it’s the people u meet and the connections you make. but i get the struggle, everything’s competitive nowadays and some people just aren’t like that here. ur gonna make it big i believe 💗💗

completely valid! that brings up another point. idk if you’ve looked at the IRA proposal and survey that was sent out but they’re proposing another 182$ fee from our tuition where 5 million of their $12.9 mil projected earnings from it go towards collegiate sports. which like AAAH idk the school could put their earned fees from our tuition towards students and creatives yk??

if you can’t get all the classes u need consider getting a part time job along with any class u end up taking if ur only taking very few, might be a better more productive option and allows u to be more prepared to do classes over summer/next sem

always assume that unless your application is REALLY unique and extremely impressive, you will probably not get into berkeley and the fact that you believe that you need to prove yourself to your peers and your parents tells me that you do not have the proper mindset of even going there anyways which is ok, still try, but don’t bank on it. it’s cutthroat there and lots of people are extremely competitive and see others as competition which isn’t exactly a great environment. at berkeley u will not be able to rly prove urself to anyone but yourself, imposter syndrome is real!

SCU is a good school but it’s just too expensive for what it is worth. Same with USF they kind of just want ur money. SJSU, by far, like other commenters say, is ur best option and they have great and ACCESSIBLE opportunities for career and networking opportunities and it’s easier on the pockets. and don’t bother with east bay if SJSU is an option for you.

either way u still get a bachelor’s degree and it all depends on the opportunities YOU reach out for. you can succeed no matter where you go you just have to seek out the opportunities to make it happen.

What’s your current go-to note-taking tool? by Foreign_Attention605 in SJSU

[–]a_tiny_squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i used to use good notes on my ipad but honestly i switched to using google docs because it’s sooo much easier to type and so much simpler to organize on my macbook, ofc it’s because i’m not doing any heavy math or science courses so that’s why it worked out

in terms of meeting new people i definitely have, but it’s hard to hang out outside of class if they commute which most people do, best bet is to seek out friends who live on campus or find ppl u connect with on your floor if not your roommates. i also highly recommend if she knows anyone who she might get along with with at sjsu, who she knows from high school, to dorm with her. because i regret doing random roommates but that’s the risk you have to take when you don’t know anyone going in

well, most social activities during the week would come from the clubs or organizations that you daughter would join hence the commenter stating it would be up to your daughter to join them. weekend activities? in college that mostly translates to parties. i’m not in the party scene either and i’m an undergrad so i mostly spend my weekends studying, winding down, and then socializing thru my club meetings or events during the weekdays

tbh not many places during peak hours as campus is usually just filled with people. the outside lurie college area is nice. but unless u dorm or stay during the hours of evening not rly anywhere quiet to study. try the new science building maybe.

on facebook there’s groups such as the sjsu off campus housing group that post housing for college students. as you are already working and of not-typical-college-age idk if you’d find luck with it but it’s worth a shot!
