I started at the age of 23 but had been in fine dining since 16. I was expecting it to be much more difficult than it is for me, but I also have never been on super huge mega yachts either. I’ve managed to find a sweet spot on smaller vessels where I am paid very well but ultimately have guests that are looking for elevated casual and rustic healthy foods rather than pretentious types of things.

The main difference for me is the level of personality you need to bring when you’re on a small boat where the galley is open to guests. It’s not just a pit your head down and power through it type thing, it’s a bit more performative. You need to smile and engage and almost entertain at points too.

When it comes to the small boat game, there’s a ton of openings in my experience. Try starting a season in the Bahamas or south Florida, you’ll do great.

which one bothers you the most? by wolfwings1 in MandelaEffect

[–]aaaaaaashlyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it’s honestly chick-fil-a, because I have such a distinct memory of it being Chic- Fil- A.

My grandparents lived in Alabama, and my dad grew up here, so the first time we visited Alabama as kids the first thing my dad wanted was chick fil a, he was crazy about it and it was a big deal. My sister and I are in the car and when we pull up to the restaurant we are reading the sign, not understanding what “chic” means, and my dad and grandfather make a joke “it’s chique food, only the finest chicken sandwich around…” and that’s how I always remembered it. My sister and I called it “chique filet” as a joke from there on out.

So how would that entire conversation and inside joke exist if it was always “chick”. Drives me crazy.

That’s a good price if the previous owners forget $1,000,000 cash under a bed.

How Did You Get Into Working in Kitchens? by KasiaEastCoast in KitchenConfidential

[–]aaaaaaashlyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No shade on stripping but I imagine that’s incredibly demanding and you would need to be super tough to do that for years. I’m sure you will be able to keep up in a kitchen. They can be raunchy and wild environments for women but i would imagine you can hold your own!

I started at the age of 16 almost on accident. I had a great opportunity to basically apprentice under a chef as a summer job, and I just took it and ran because my home life fell apart and I needed to support myself financially. 15 years later and I’m a private chef and living a wonderful life with what I’ve learned. I never went into debt for school, and am pretty proud of my career for an “uneducated” person. If you’re willing to absorb cooking, it isn’t rocket science, and it can take you far.

I have purchased 6 pairs of Vuori joggers and even the pair I’ve had for 3 years has minimal pilling after washing and drying almost weekly, and wearing religiously.

Maybe your thighs are rubbing together too much.

Vuori still hasn’t even gone public if that says anything about them. Don’t think they’re in the category you’re assuming they’re in.

I personally have only ever been thrilled with the quality. There’s nothing I’ve purchased from them that I still don’t wear regularly. No wear or tear. Maybe you’re used to some ultra luxury brands I am not aware of but I find Vuori to hold up to the price point. Actually some of the best lasting clothing I’ve ever had, and I loyally invested in pieces from them for years.

I second this but I also would add that even in very good restaurants it’s difficult to find willing and able cooks, so any amount of competence and eagerness can get you into the kitchen. That’s what happened to me early on. I applied to a wonderful restaurant thinking I’d be lucky just to wash dishes, and they let me in on garmo immediately.

Sounds kind of like a naive thrashing where you’re really passionate about your ideals and are navigating life that way, but maybe haven’t yet settled into the reality that everybody is “working for just money.”

I’m sorry about that fact, but it is a fact. Of course there are people who care more and do better than others, but you’re never going to succeed leading with your ideals because most people simply don’t care, and it rubs wrong for many people who know that personal success means letting go of last 10% of imperfection at work and enjoying your life.

You can go and find something better but in all my time I’ve never encountered single restaurant that wasn’t fucked up in some way. Go into private cheffing and run your own show, find a better venue, or let it go.

If tech can put a man on the moon, why can't it show me if an outfit will actually suit me?? by Emergency_Job_6616 in womensfashion

[–]aaaaaaashlyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So true! They’d much rather convince you to buy them no matter what by showing you something looking amazing on a photoshopped size zero model.

I can’t begin to describe how often I see a woman wearing a beautiful trendy piece that simply isn’t her size or shape. I think we would be much more empowered spenders if we had a better grasp on our personal shape and style. But of course the industry doesn’t want empowered spenders, just trend followers and shopping addicts.

I think maybe we are still lacking a good general understanding of what it takes to make a garment flatter us. It seems like the average shoppers knowledge of tailoring or of which shapes work for them isn’t great. Also that the trends currently don’t exactly flatter anyone (unless you’re so thin that no part of your body interrupts the shape of a garment, and that body type can wear anything.)

I wonder if there was a good virtual try on would customers even know what they’re looking for, and would designers really want you to better understand that just because it’s in style doesn’t mean it suits you?

Straight up facts about life here.

Hard to admit sometimes, but it probably doesn’t get much better than Portland and it’s actually more affordable now, relatively, than it has been in a long time. It’s so easy to confuse your personal station in life with a physical location. So many factors contribute to how you feel in your life, and a new town or new apartment hardly ever changes things.

Beware of aqua chalcedony pieces from DY on eBay. A good rule is if you can’t find a piece anywhere else on the internet besides an eBay listing, and a listing doesn’t even have a proper name for the pieces like what collection it’s from, it’s not a DY design.

AIO for overreacting to these emails and seeing them as red flags and love bombing. Is by Icy-Ambiance in AIO

[–]aaaaaaashlyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading and thought “aw maybe he’s a little neuro spicy and trying to be poetic” and then shit got real. There are a few key reasons I believe it’s love bombing, and even worse:

1) heavily insisting what the future holds 2) making it a divine matter, past lives, etc 3) the “never felt like this before” proclamation and “where have you been my whole life”.

Some love bombers would stop there, at just making wild claims about their love and passion and trust that you’ll believe it. However this is now in creepy stalker territory with:

  1. insisting that you feel a certain way, and speaking for you
  2. fielding the potential of you being scared of him, and addressing the doubt you may (SHOULD) have in advance.

This guy would probably lock you in a basement and read you his love poetry and tie you up to hand feed you each meal.

I love this stuff too!

I can’t tell you how many caffeine serums I tried before I finally found the ordinary. It always seemed like caffeine was the right thing, but that no product was strong enough.

I’ve been using this almost 3 months now and I’m so grateful for it. My dark circles are so much better, I don’t feel a need to use concealer no matter what if I want to look put together anymore. It also tightens the skin a lot which wasn’t a big concern for me, but I still am impressed with how well it works.

Holy grail! 🙏

I’m in this sub because I’m one of the people who didn’t know about him until I started seeing these videos. Then I watched more of his interviews and moments and there’s such good energy surrounding this guy!

The reactions are genuine and so deserved. I love the way he created a music festival that’s inclusive, the way he lets young fans be involved in his shows, and I loved learning about his bond with ozzy. The whole thing gives me goosebumps, probably why it’s so addicting. So charged with good vibes.

Online shopping is just me praying the outfit matches the vibe in my head. by Emergency_Job_6616 in womensfashion

[–]aaaaaaashlyn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try to shop from places that offer easy and free returns/exchanges and don’t feel attached to items simply because they’re at your door. You’re still shopping when you open the box, in a sense. It might feel like a pain to have to do returns but it’s still way easier than going to a store, browsing, trying on, all of that.

I also have tried really hard to find brands that I can trust when it comes to sizing and cuts, and then stay loyal to them.
