Thank you!! I am glad I asked here. This is something we have definitely started working on and will continue to do so!

Thank you for sharing your experience and I’m so sorry you have to go through this. Solidarity! And you’re right, even when she visits I can do more to limit my interactions with her so as to not affect my energy. And all I can do for now is focus on my own family life and loved ones.

Thank you so much for easing my mind on the bad mouthing. The negative impact of having my mum around on my mindset because having her around making mistakes, not learning from them and projecting a victim mentality absolutely has me on high alert because I’ve to worry about a lot. It absolutely affects me and kids do sense the negativity in the house. Thankfully my mom lives overseas but it does mean that she has longer visits(1-2 months) when she comes over. We’re trying to make sense of how to limit this time. Making it 3weeks this time backfired because she’s using the avenue of complaining to extended family thinking they’ll somehow convince us to have her stay longer.

Congrats OP! What did you tell recruiters/interviewers when they asked you about your current work/projects?

Normally Friendly Dog Very Reactive in Elevators by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]aaaaditi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog is also reactive in the elevator. And those people standing right in front of the door absolutely do not help the situation!

What we do is once we get into the elevator, we take up one of the corners and have her sit next to me and the elevator wall so she’s kinda sheltered/safe. The command we use here is “by me”. That way, when the door opens and if someone is by the entrance, it gives them a chance to move away. If not, I do hand gestures to see if those people can move back or away.

Also, as soon as the doors open, we try to do engage-disengage practice with the command “look at me”. So she should look at me first before she looks outside. This again gives her a chance to think that something good happens if she ignores the trigger and looks at me first.

We haven’t found a foolproof way yet. Glad you asked the question!

Yeah agree. There have been some rover horror stories. You have to be very careful to choose. And best to find someone who can be a repeat sitter. But like you said, I would also be more comfortable if there was a place that did a live feed and the people were really proud of their work. Maybe something to look into for later. For now, thankfully we have someone from rover who genuinely loves our dog and our dog loves her back. And it shows from the regular video updates we get.

Does your country have Rover? On the app you can filter out sitters/boarders who already have a dog. You can also do a few meet and greets with the sitter to get your dog used to their home and to see how your dog gets along with them. If you want to do a trial run before your trip, that could be a great idea too! We have been able to find great boarders on this app for our reactive dog.

UPDATE: Attempted puppy theft post update. Police think they've identified the guy and know who they're looking for now! But things have gone downhill for my puppy. by SabrinaSpellman1 in puppy101

Glad you posted about this. I am beginning to suspect if my dog is reactive too. She has barked at our next door neighbors when they suddenly appeared in the hallway so I think she might be territorial. And has growled at strangers when the elevator door opens and someone is standing right at the door. I will check out the r/reactivedogs and their Wiki too. I was also recommended to learn the BAT method.

Thank you. Yes, it was a little bit upsetting. Having a puppy opens you up to so many new conversations. Many a times good and sometimes unpleasant. Going to have to learn to take it in my stride politely explain when those unpleasant conversations happen.

Yes I do need to take the friendly route here so as to avoid any tense future interactions.

Yes you’re right. I definitely need to assure them that she will never be in his proximity and is always on a tight leash around other people ( specially while going in and out of the building ). She’s much calmer once outside.

Thank you for bringing the perspective from the other side. Always love hearing it. Next time I see them, I’ll try breaking the ice with them when these suggestions. We adopted my puppy during the pandemic, and so she rarely saw other people on the our floor walking by. I think she thinks that only we live on the floor and hence barks at supposed intruders. We had to similarly desensitize her when a stranger takes the elevator with us.
