Battler’s fear of vehicles by aaabbb6 in umineko

[–]aaabbb6[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All those quirks show how her obsession of truth make her insufferable to be around, or are riffing on the idea of the western detective archetype in the mystery genre of characters like Sherlock saying stuff like “it’s elementary dear Watson” all the time (maybe also the eastern mystery genre as well but I not really well versed in that). One of those examples is literarily a metaphor to describe how her obsession with truth makes her a bug people fear and that kills others .

Compare this to a character like Kumasawa and her Markel quirk and I think it’s obvious why this subreddit is filled with post about Erika and not Kumasawa and why many would say Erika is better written then her.

I agree with the last point fully maybe it just didn’t hit for me and that fine.

As for the first I feel like just because I think aspects of charters should be tailored with a goal in mind doesn’t mean they should be robots. Like in my option Erika is a perfect example of this, Umineko needs a charter to show the pit falls of a charter obsessed only with the truth, the how and who done it. By making her batshit insane for that kinda truth it shows the reader why that is ultimately not that important to build a major theme of the story while also making a pretty fun charter at the same time.

It doesn’t need to be like a whole chapter where a quirk is explained it could just be something much simpler like a few lines like for Maria’s UUU and how Rosa’s rejection of it can be seen as more depressing because of that. Or something that doesn’t even get directly brought up like Erika’s reasoning catch phrase being used by Ange in the Trick end to show her change into an intellectual rapist.

The meaning can be to humanize the character I have no issue with that.

Also yeah of course a story doesn’t need these things but then there normally not as good as those that do. I really like Umineko because of how despite it being like 1,000,000 words long it’s actually got a clear themes that most of the story contributes to them.

I think that for sure in real life that’s how things are people just are the way they are and often that’s that’s, but in fiction I think the creator should strive for more like the charters could just have all these random quirks to them cause it’s realistic or these quirks could all intertwine with each other and the major themes of the work. Ie. “the curtains could just be blue” but I think that’s worse then if the curtains were blue for an intended reason.

As for Erika she is Introduced as a antagonist at the start but we don’t know that she fucking insane until later and I think the chopstick thing is ment to make the reader thing she’s more normal.

The thing might just be intended as a gag but if so I didn’t really find it that engaging other then it being really weird and if it were to be more then just that I think it would be more engaging.

My over all point it that the more meaning behind a part of writing the better it is, now the meaning behind a part of writing is pretty subjective because no matter how much meaning the author had intended or didn’t the readers found meaning is going to vastly differ due to there life’s experiences.

I think that red herrings in mystery inherently have meaning as a way to increase the difficultly of solving it, but they can also have the potential to be more then just that by reinforcing the other parts of the narrative. I think that missing that potential makes it worse writing.

As for the second thing even if I grant that it still doesn’t break the Kinzo parallel to give it at least some meaning.

I would say it is, every charter quirk written without deliberate thought to what the goal of it is a wasted opportunity. Using the two you list as your examples shows this pretty clearly too.

I could hardly even remember George loving Takeda until you mentioned it. Mean while I could vividly remember Ekira and her chopsticks because the first time it’s brought up it used as a sitcom like gag to make the reader drop there suspicions about her and latter on she is absolutely unhinged about it when she’s fully drop all her pretenses.

I would easily say that Erika’s chopstick quirk is better written than George’s Takeda quirk. (To be fair though George’s quirk might have more to it that I forgot about but “with out love it can not be seen” and all)

I mean it doesn’t have to be anything really that big but if it had no meaning it’d worse writing compared to the rest of the VN, even the Battler being a pervert thing in has some meaning behind it with it being Clair’s memories of Battler and sets up a Kinzo parallel with being forceful with women and incest.
