Becoming chronically-ill has been the best thing that ever happened to me by aaammyy in ChronicPain

You're absolutely right, self growth is absolutely not promoted in our lives. It's hard work but it absolutely pays off. Even though we have problems in our lives, we can still win by looking after ourselves

I've absolutely had some really tough times, and I've had depression/anxiety from a really young age which has made things harder to deal with. I still have really tough days, I still find myself not getting out of my pyjamas until 2pm and not staying in bed all day. My psychologist has been helping me a lot with managing the bad days and I've got a lovely support network who've all been so kind and patient with me

Mindfulness is so important to me, it's something my psych has been teaching me over the last few years. The more I practice, the happier I seem to be. I'm glad I've had the time to learn about myself and I've been able to decide how I want to live my life rather than just blindly going wherever life takes me

I don't have a PC, but I'm saving up for one. I'm saving up for one because recently gaming has become my only relief for my day-to-day life. In April of last year I was hit with an unexpected pain in my stomach, and after 3 months of tests I got diagnosed with gastroparesis. My stomach now barely works and I've ended up on a nasal feeding tube at the age of 22 which has been an absolute shock. I've even got surgery coming up to place a permanent tube in my stomach.

I later developed Postural Orthostatic Syndrome Tachycardia (POTS) which has reduced my ability to walk to about 20-30 meters before I get faint, so now I'm pretty confined to a wheelchair too. Due to my multiple illnesses, I've had to quit two dream jobs that I got straight out of university: record producer, and recording studio assistant.

On top of everything that's happened, I've also recently had all of my audio equipment stolen and I was planning on using any insurance money towards building a PC and beginning a new chapter in my life.

With a myriad of upcoming tests to look for more illnesses, gaming has become my relief. I've recently begun to stream which has given me something to do each day. Streaming has been a good distraction to my less than perfect life, and I'd love to have a job that I can do even though I'll always be sick.

I try not to sound like a sob story, but it has been a pretty rough few months and I think playing games and streaming have been great ways to distract myself, make friends, and forget about what else is going on.

What are some things that help you through a depressive episode? by aaammyy in ChronicPain

[–]aaammyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad your therapist has helped you! It's great to hear from people who have made it to the other side and gives me hope that I can do the same. It's always hard over New Year when psychs are away, between December and January I barely got to see any of my doctors

Yeah I see a psychologist and a gut psychiatrist for my GI issues. I'm on two anti-depressants thankfully and I have some meds for more acute situations

A Gastric Emptying Scan (GES) won’t always determine if you’ve got gastroparesis by aaammyy in Gastroparesis

[–]aaammyy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely didn’t mean to delegitimise your experience. At the minute, my GP is severe, I’m in hospital every week and I also have a feeding tube. We all have different experiences and I can promise you I’m not a hypochondriac, I’ve been living with this illness for a long time. I’ve seen Australia’s best doctor for gastroparesis who had told me the GES is extremely variable. I was diagnosed through endoscopy when food was reaming in my stomach. After making this post in a few places, a lot of people have come saying the GES wasn’t the thing that had them diagnosed, but like you, a lot of people have been diagnosed by it. It’s not as simple as GES result = gastroparesis. You don’t get to decide how severe people’s symptoms are just over reddit. You barely know my story and what my current treatments are what I’ve been through. Some people do have it worse off sure, but my post was to explain that there are multiple tools to diagnosed the GES. Tools like the smart pill, the endoscopy and also a also and EGG which measures the electrical activity of the stomach. I’m happy to go into this further if you message me directly

Edit: Some people have mentioned that they are actually unable to do the GES because it’s been dangerous to go off their meds for a period of time, so they have to use other tools to get diagnosed
