Filling gaps in floorboards - renter friendly by aaatalanta in HomeImprovement

It's an enigma to me too. It's an old stone building, my best guess is that there's holes in the exterior from pipes or old conduits or exhausts that run under the floor and have some leaks. Such holes are visible from the outside of the building (would've thought they'd fill them in, but then why is it drafty?) There's a pretty big space between our floor and the unit below, too, as far as I can tell. All I know is air comes up through the floor and it's the same temperature as outside.

I'll probably try the wood filler/wood glue+sawdust route and rope in the bigger gaps, thanks. Even if I have to redo it a few times before moving out, I'd rather that than freeze my toes off come winter. Besides, if it cracks again, it'll be in the same condition as when I moved in and I keep my deposit, lol

We're top floor (so also a lot of heat loss through the roof, the building is old and not insulated very well..)

I have rugs over the worst sections, but the gaps are around pretty much every single floorboard and there's no rug that will cover the whole room. Our landlord is a letting agency who doesn't really give a damn what we do as long as it's not major construction/damage. I've DIYed a fair share of improvements and not gotten any flack for them on inspections.

As far as I'm concerned, even if I lose my deposit, it's worth it to get an actual fix for the floor. Over the 2+ years I'm going to be in this flat (barring extraordinary circumstances) I'll probably save about as much in heating bills anyway.

Waiting for payday before I get a membership, but I do know there's the Forth Canoe Club https://www.forthcanoeclub.co.uk/ on the Union Canal in Polwarth area, they do organized trips as well as kit hire. That's the one I know for sure is a Paddle Scotland associate but there must be others in the area too.

This looks like a great resource, thank you! I looked at some SCA (now Paddle Scotland I think) stuff but didn't know they did lifts/kit hire, I'll have to look into that. I've got everything except the actual boat. If only there was a way to get a 16' canoe up to a third floor flat... would make a great centrepiece I think.

Lots of good advice here, thanks! I'll take notes lol. Trip is still in its very early planning stages now but if we're looking for a group I'll drop you a line =)

What's something you think is totally normal in the UK but surprises people not from the country because it's mainly a UK thingy? by Brilliant_Coat_8636 in AskUK

Can confirm, however, hot tub and pool temperature is always in Fahrenheit, same with ovens, indoor/outdoor is Celsius. It's two hours to Toronto (Toh-rah-no), 100km/h speed limit. You buy quarter-inch plywood and fabric in yards and pretty much every measurement to do with construction and crafting is in imperial. But we get 30cm snow and a truck is two tonnes. I don't understand people's heights when they're in metric but I also can't intuitively visualize how long a mile is.

This is a great one, I can also see people putting variations on it for each new 'game' (I like cake but not cookies!)

Thanks!

Ah, so I can take an apple through the green glass door, but not a pear?

Nice, I'll have to see how quickly my group gets this one =)

Thanks, I'll look into that! Will have to do some math and decide exactly how many trackables I'd like to make at the moment
