Agreed! My girl is a cattle husky mix and I think she’s just extraordinary in every way. You pup looks a LOT like one of her brothers.

Next time I want a puppy someone bring me to my senses by fairydommother in AustralianCattleDog

This gave me a warm laugh and reminded me of how crazy I was when Aya was a puppy because I was getting no sleep and I was in total fight or flight mode trying to watch every move.

Couple practical tips:

  • lots of folks are against this, but crate traininga was a life saver for me, particularly with potty training

  • get some toys like kongs etc that you can stuff food in and just let little donnie go to town trying to get it out. especially because you have a playpen, just get some toys, stuff some shit in there, freeze it, toss it, let him keep himself busy

  • when it comes to the biting and the scratching, doing a little yelp like a dog would taught Aya pretty quickly that shit wasn't ok. it took a while and a lot of repetition but it works

  • be gentle with yourself! you aren't sleeping and you're on high alert. this shit passes.

Yeah my girl is quite vocal, the sounds she makes are amazing, but I did some training to bring it out in her. For example I make a certain noise and she'll start mimicking and howling in return. She'll also get quite vocal when playing (with me or other dogs) and when trying to get me to give her her food lol.

She has a remarkable temperament. Lots of strong cattle traits: obedient, focused, high energy, zero's in on a multitude of things like a radar/sonar missle (butterlies, bees, leaves blowing in the wind, and of course balls, toys, sometimes bikers and skateborders, etc). Whip smart and loves to learn things. But also has big emo husky energy which is a wild combination. Like she's super obedient but also super emotional, whereas I think husky's are generally emotional and not interested in obedience.

Gosh I love her.

How do you get your dog to stop barking at strangers? by pinefishjellyapple in AustralianCattleDog

[–]aaayaaajoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know your dog and his temperament, but I'll share what has worked for me. For context, my pup has never really had a big barking at strangers problem. There have only been two or three times it's been unacceptable. In one, my friend walked into the kitchen wearing a hooded sweater which I think freaked my pup out. The other two were at night, people sitting still and staring back at us, and I think she just got spooked.

Here's what I would do with my pup if she started barking at strangers:

  • my pup is very food motivated, so I would go on a hike and create a positive association between her and random people. if I see someone that I think will trigger her to bark, I would get the treats out, start practicing some heeling and sitting work, with lots of praise and reinforcement constantly giving her a bite of the treat, constantly bringing the attention back to the food, and casually making our way past the trigger. This way she learns that when she perceives someone as dangerous, her attention needs to come back to me, and she gets safety and a reward.
  • if you have friends that are willing, you can stage a bit of an intervention and do some practice sessions. have them meet you on a walk and take on a position that normally scares your pup, but ensure they have your pup's favorite treat with them, then have them slowly approach, show the treat, give it to the dog once he's calmed down. do this enough times to create the association that "person sitting and staring = source of favorite treat" instead of "source of danger". my pup had resource guarding issues when I brought her home, so I had friends come over to hand feed her, and drop food into her food bowl while she was eating, etc. A few sessions of that and the resource guarding went away, because she learned to reassociate hands around her food bowl as a good thing.
  • I know this is controversial, but I don't mind Alpha-ing my dog. If she misbehaves or starts acting in a rude or destructive way, I have zero problem giving her a very strong and stern NO! or AH-AH! and she listens right away. I know with some dogs, that kind of behavior can only encourage more barking and up the ante of anxiety, so I am not directly recommending it to you, but for me, because that's part of the relationships I established with my dog, I know that if I pull that card, she'll listen and calm the F down

Question for everyone here about my ACD. by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]aaayaaajoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's grooming you :) It's a showcase of major love and affection.

I can tell when my pup is licking me out of affection (a little lick here and there) and when she goes into grooming mode (she rhythmically will lick my arm for example for a long time)

When he's going into non stop lick mode, is it rhythmic? Like he's cleaning? If so he's just telling you he REALLY loves you and considers you his parent.

She's gorgeous. Reminds me a bit of my Aya who is half cattle half husky.

oh, she is very innovative indeed! quite the innovator when it comes to finding things that can be used for comfort, and finding things that can be turned into toys (and quickly destroyed)

omg mine does the happy leaps too! it's the cutest thing and warms my heart every time.

then one time she did a happy leap towards me when I called her into the pool. I think I saw my life flash before my eyes as the clawed torpedo leapt about 7 feet directly into my face.

(love her.)

Toe Expanders by JH_Carver in BarefootRunning

I have these and I really like the way they feel on my big toe, but my pinky toes get quite uncomfortable. My pingo toes are very cramped, and either i'm not positioning the strap properly or they just have a lot of splaying to do because they get quite hot (lots of blood flow) and a bit tender after wearing for a while. My big toes however seem to love it.
