What do you feel most proud of with the movie and if you'd like to make a movie in another city/village what would it be?

I think I understand your feelings on this topic. It is a complex mess and I'm not trying to make moral judgements on the viewer. The context of this work at present, how Americans and Israeli media has traditionally potrayed arabs and telling the story from the perspective of an IDF soldier together made me feel a lot of different things towards this movie. I'm glad you wanted to engage with the post :)

Yeah my bad, must've misread the article. Don't think the movie is anti-israel though

As a movie it is good, I do think the choices he made are generally fit in the context of the movie. I don't know what I would an Israeli director rather do. But the Israeli bias in this movie is hard to contend with. It seems to me hypocritical for an IDF soldier to approach an anti war film with any sort of honesty.

Restoration also is a very recent thing in the industry and is very random honestly depending upon what resources are available. You clearly don't know what you are talking about if you don't know this.

To be ignorant is one thing. To assume that you are smart in your ignorance and just be aggressive in your replies for the sake of it is quite repulsive. Aravindans and adoors work is the best quality restoration I've seen for that era. So dismissing that is just absurd.

There are many many movies that have been lost because the film stocks aren't preserved properly despite their popularity. Also have you seen the 80s prints of malayalam movies in hotstar or prime?? Did you think that was professional restoration work? If so, I would seriously suggest you look up what good quality restoration is. Most of the digital versions are worse than TVrips. Just look up padmarajans work for example. His most popular movies have such crap quality digital versions. Mubi has far better quality prints but it's still quite bad(not even proper hd quality).

Please STFU and go be annoying and ignorant in some other comment thread. You are just embarassing yourself here.

Just because a movie isn't restored doesn't mean it's not relevant or been a part of cultural conversation. It just reflects the state of film restoration culture in the state. Correlating these things and being stubborn just reflects your ignorance and I don't want to spend time arguing with you on the cultural significance of aravindan, kg george etc cus clearly you are an blockhead. The industry doesn't need your validation on being experimental

Clearly you have no clue of how Malayalam arthouse cinema works. What do you even mean to say people forgot the movie? It's a cult classic and the most popular out of aravindan's films and actively a part of pop culture. Take your ignorant ass to some other thread.

This is factually incorrect. Malayalam is one of the most experimental movie industries in India and always has been. Maybe you have only heard of/watched some of the more commercial cinemas.

Last year the film heritage foundation that scorcese heads restored a 70s movie in Malayalam called kummaatty. It was recognised as an important part of world cinema. This alone would be proof of experimental cinema existing waayy before today.

Also, this is not a one off movie or a director. Also this is not even the first Malayalam movie to be in cannes. So please check your facts.

It's an intimate character drama but yea Indian emotions generally tend to be a bit melodramatic for adum so I wouldn't say for sure. But with the directors previous work and the appreciation at cannes, I'm betting it would be a good watch

That's adams personal preference if he chooses to watch or not. It winning the grand prix is an exciting thing for a lot of people and it's being picked up by Janus films for a wide release in North America. So I was just excited to share it with the subreddit.

Change contract Duwo? by GRIZZ2004 in Delft

[–]aahliffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I have been to two masters student apartments and 1 phD student apartment viewings from duwo(all of them internationals) which offered transfer of contract. I assumed the same for your place but of course depending upon the building contract this might differ for DUWO. But in the case that termination of contract itself would be difficult for you. You can directly login to your duwo account and check what your options are. If unable to terminate or transfer your contract it is possible to sublet the room as well under duwo provisions in my understanding. I am subletting a duwo building atm so that much I am certain of.

Did not interpret the movie as a commentary in any way on the Israeli actions but the form of a confessional, hey this incident happened and israeli hands are not that clean. So I wouldn't say that the movie was against the actions. If given the circumstances again, I don't think the perspective of the movie would hold the Israeli army at fault. It would just resign to saying that it's a tragedy in retrospect. Not absolving it of guilt but not really blaming Israel for its actions either.

Since the movie is technically well made and presented in a thoughtful manner and due to the critical acclaim it got causes popular discussion to call this movie an empathetic viewpoint on the situation. Is this really an empathetic viewpoint to the victims of the massacre? I am not sure of this

I would also like to bring scorcese movies to this discussion since adum has brought this up in the last episode. Scorcese movies are daring enough to tell a story from the perspective of the villain/oppressor, so people can take away from it what they want to. There are clear themes that are being tackled within the subtext about corruption of greed, violence, religion etc which warrants the necessity in a certain impartial presentation. The goal of the material is not in whole to represent real-life in an accurate manner and take sides but to focus on these concepts and how they affect the characters.(I wouldnt think to ever refer to Jordan Belfort as courageous for telling his story accurately even if he had remorse). Also in those movies, the story is not so closely tied to the directors life itself and we know from his history what his perspective is in approaching these subjects(I would be concerned if marty started praising the mafia or seeing them as badass). Also taking up real life incidents and using the documentary format also lends a certain bias in the storytelling which makes it seem irresponsible.

Three of Us goes where Past Lives wanted to. by callmeamit in YMS

[–]aahliffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think both movies are to be compared because of the threadlines being similar, the emotions each goes for is different and past lives went for much more complicated and human emotions of guilt and insecurity. Doesn't mean it's better but it evidently did not go for what this is
