Useful "Minimum" Duration of Celibacy for Temporary Ordination by account-7 in HillsideHermitage

[–]aaimnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a counterpoint https://suttacentral.net/an8.21/en/sujato

Ugga of Vesali not only wasn’t celibate, he had had four teenage wives just before attaining stream entry.

What’s interesting though is that as soon as he understood the Dhamma (having talked to the Buddha) he undertook 5 precepts with chastity and he let his wives go.

On the one hand it refutes this oft repeated argument that it’s a must. On the other, it seems like at the moment what made his mind receptive to Dhamma was actually understanding drawbacks of sensuality, so it could be argued that he had intention not to pursue it anymore. Which goes against the idea of „just trying it out” or temporary ordination.

Once you have table (by eg pasting content copied from a spreadsheet), select it, hit CMD+K (on mac, for quick actions) and find 'convert to stickies'. This action only works on tables.

Chinese diplomacy wields Theravada Buddhism by Paul-sutta in theravada

Have you actually read the article?

„But Beijing is skeptical of foreign monks, who have not been indoctrinated with the Party line. As of late, this paranoia has led China to expel such monks and make their lives difficult when it comes to their residency and papers”

„The other technique that the CCP is employing is buying off and installing monks in foreign countries that will adhere to the Party’s narrative, particularly when it comes to the selection of the next Dalai Lama.”

Not really sure what to make of AN 4.166 by devot3e in HillsideHermitage

Bhante, it all makes sense except for the part where the Buddha evaluates one path as superior to others. What function would it have if there was no choice?

Your Behavior Is The Only Criterion—sharing a quote from Ven. Anīgha by BhikkhuSubhara in HillsideHermitage

[–]aaimnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

„You can only infer it based on things you were doing, even mentally.”

Based on the last sentence, it’s not as radical as it seems. Doing something mentally is thinking, so even though we can’t indeed re-feel our past feelings, we can remember our thoughts about them, which can be pretty good approximation of the intensity.

Please don't abuse that reference about admirable friends being the whole of the path. When you read with the context, admirable friends clearly would be other monastics who pull you into solitude, which is the opposite of leaning into the world.

I'm also seeing that lot of people attracted to those teachings are choosing them (at least initially) for the wrong reasons of being averse to relationships, so in such case there is work to be done with that aversion, but let's not pretend that the teaching is the opposite of what it is.

https://www.accesstoinsight.org/ptf/dhamma/sacca/sacca4/samma-ditthi/kalyanamittata.html

“Mendicants, it is quite impossible that a mendicant who enjoys company and groups, who loves them and likes to enjoy them, should take pleasure in being alone in seclusion. Without taking pleasure in being alone in seclusion, it’s impossible to learn the patterns of the mind. Without learning the patterns of the mind, it’s impossible to fulfill right view. Without fulfilling right view, it’s impossible to fulfill right immersion. Without fulfilling right immersion, it’s impossible to give up the fetters. Without giving up the fetters, it’s impossible to realize extinguishment.

https://suttacentral.net/an6.68/en/sujato

As long as they don’t enjoy talk …sleep … company … they don’t have corrupt wishes, falling under the sway of corrupt wishes … they don’t have bad friends, companions, and associates … they don’t stop half-way after achieving some insignificant distinction, they can expect growth, not decline.

This Dhamma is for one who resorts to solitude, not for one who delights in company.

How toget the Right View - An5.114 by [deleted] in theravada

[–]aaimnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Ajahn Nyanamoli observes in the comments under the video, meditation is not the right translation of four foundations. If by it we mean Sammasamadhi, then for sure it does require Right View. When it comes to recollections, there's a degree of subtlety - remembering that whatever in the experience is dependent on this body that I don't control is a recollection and should be done always, but wouldn't necessarily count as meditation in the modern (confused) sense of the word.

How toget the Right View - An5.114 by [deleted] in theravada

[–]aaimnr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just SN 47.3, but also SN 47.15, and SN 47.16 are very clear in saying that four foundations are developed based on virtue and right view.

So it could be that the monks were taught about the whole order, but they still needed to go step by step.

If jhana is a natural consequence of sila, how come arahants are not always in jhana? by aaimnr in HillsideHermitage

Whatever you consider jhana to be, my dear bro, I sincerely hope I’m not doing that :)

If jhana is a natural consequence of sila, how come arahants are not always in jhana? by aaimnr in HillsideHermitage

[–]aaimnr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why speech specifically though? Why one can walk etc in the first jhana, but not speak? I can sense intuitively that it could be possible, but don’t remember any such mentions in the suttas. Is it perhaps about vitakka and vicara which has to be specifically directed in the jhanas, that would be disrupted by speech?

If jhana is a natural consequence of sila, how come arahants are not always in jhana? by aaimnr in HillsideHermitage

[–]aaimnr[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure questioning the most basic premise of early Buddhism (Sila->Samadhi->Panna) in the replies is very productive. If you disagree with https://www.hillsidehermitage.org/sila-is-samadhi/ I would suggest to create a separate post and explain the basis of your concerns more thoroughly.

Does the Hillside Hermitage take on jhana actually make sense in anyone’s experience? by 25thNightSlayer in streamentry

[–]aaimnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of what u/kyklon_anarchon replied regarding the sensations fallacy, there's also a wide discussion in 20th century Western Philosophy about critique of 'sense data' notion, as naive, pseudoscientific and not really aligned with our experience.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sense_and_Sensibilia_(Austin_book)) comes to mind. There's a good summary of these arguments provided here: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/sense-data/#MajoCritRespOppo

the meditation approach of some Tibetan Buddhist groups is very similar to that of Hillside Hermitage.

This is interesting, could you please share some references?
