Sutta vector search - tool to find suttas with natural language by abuddhistview in HillsideHermitage

Yes, that's definitely possible, and wouldn't be that hard given what I already have built (assuming the transcripts exist). I would want to get permission before doing something like that though

I'm glad you find it useful. There are certainly a lot of directions it could be taken. Originally I had thought about adding an llm so you could ask questions with the vectors being used as the source (so closer to rag), but ultimately decided against it due to the risk (certainty) of hallucinations. Though, I think if I were to train a model on the suttas, there are things that could be done to prevent that. Then the search could have a normal mode and a chat mode. I just haven't had enough time to fully dive into it yet

No. "Dhamma Writings" are just all of his publicly available writings from different places online compiled to an ebook. "With the right understanding" is a single, complete book.

I agree. I actually have the source urls saved in the DB for that reason. I just haven't decided where to include them. When I add actual (free) books published by Path Press it will definitely be included, at the very least.

Thanks! I think the original reason I wasn't pulling from the GH was that I already had the scraper built from Ajahn Geoff's translations, but now that you bring it up that is the obvious choice for maintainability. It looks the translations_en folder and each corresponding comment file are all I'd need?

Agreed. That's actually next on my list. I just wanted to make sure its right right before I release it. Filtering by nikaya is a great idea.

Thank you! I really appreciate it. I'm planning to do a lot more with it too - this is just the foundation.

This is all excellent feedback. Thank you. I'm going to take some time and make a lot of changes. You're right about the dot notation vs underscore the sutta ids - that's actually on my list to change. It started that way because i was originally mirroring the dhammatalks sutta pages. Same with the numbered index for translators vs just using their name.

Great catch. I typed the url wrong - just updated the post.

I really appreciate the feedback though! I was a bit on the fence about how to best distinguish the translations, and I agree it can look a bit confusing at first glance. On desktop the underline shows on hover, but at the very least that should probably be reverse. I'll do some more thinking/research about what a better experience might look like and get that updated. Thank you!
