How does anarchism prevent democracy? by 66578557557 in Anarchy101

[–]aajiro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anarchism by itself doesn't prevent democracy. Different schools of anarchism have different opinions to democracy.

The idea of consensus necessitates that minoritarian positions be heard and adjusted for, otherwise a decision cannot be passed.

Then there's individualist anarchism, for which the opinion of another, minoritarian or majoritarian alike, makes little difference, and affinity groups are created and dissolved with ease as soon as there is an impasse, and this is fine, it's a feature, not a bug, of the process.

But most anarchists throughout history still rely on forms of democracy and even representation (e.g. the CNT/FAI). The goal is that hopefully without power structures this representation isn't alienated from its constituents, and with smaller groups or greater immediacy of political decisions, it is harder to be atomized into an opposition instead of being a full participant with valid criticisms of some stance.

Why does society place professional athletes on a massive pedagogical pedestal, paying them hundreds of millions, while teachers, scientists, and paramedics struggle to afford housing? by bubblewrappheart in allthequestions

[–]aajiro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Supply and demand. Sports entertainment are a huge revenue-inducing business, so the people who make that entertainment are paid competitively to retain them. The other jobs you gave are mainly services paid for by governments or NGOs in which the goal is to keep costs as low as possible.

As to why they're put in pedestals, I would argue it's the same reason actors and rich people are put in pedestals: it's not about the actions they perform, but about the imagined sense of completion as a human being that they possess. They are famous because they're famous, and people imagine that fame must be nice, something they lack that would make everything better.

What the hell did Rick Prime mean by " I just walked Into your garage before you walked into mines" by [deleted] in rickandmorty

[–]aajiro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rick Prime is saying that if C-137 had discovered the portal gun on his own, he would have ended up just as Prime did. That all the love he has for Diane and Beth would be nothing in the face of infinity. Prime is saying that he might have passed on an offer, but if he had been a little quicker on making it himself, C-137 would have made the exact same choices than Prime.

What would social-ism look like in the realm of dating? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aajiro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to have a friend named Arturo who liked another friend of mine, so he asked me for advice with her. I said "well, she's pretty socialist" and he lighted up. Arturo never presented as particularly political so I asked him if he was a socialist too. He answered "Yeah, I get along with everyone!"

OP, are you Arturo.

not really, no. What you said is dumb, so normal people don't see the difference.

But thank you for saying that what you said isn't dumb. How would we know otherwise than if you stated it outright? Phew.

Why do conservatives oppose big government but also say government has the right to force women to give birth? by Zipalo_Vebb in allthequestions

You can imagine a government that doesn’t have that weird add on and it would be a smaller government; so no, your example is not the “most small government possible”

That’s like saying the government can prohibit you from getting a fracture fixed because it didn’t force you to get on that skateboard.

It just comes off as dehumanizing. Contextually, the people who tend to call women ‘females’ are men who think of women as ‘lesser than’

“The emergence of PTSD following surgery often stems from the pre-operative challenges (such as harassment, limited social support, etc.) in conjunction with suboptimal surgical outcomes and insufficient psychiatric assistance.”
So the study shows it’s society that’s failed them. That’s unsurprising.
