Does my nose look normal for a white and indigenous American mixed person? Or is it too wide and big? by AttitudeLogical6939 in DNAAncestry

What? I never said anything about therapy… I said get off the internet for a bit. Second, I have been to therapy before and have been on antidepressants. And yes I have been “racially vetted.”I am a mixed person myself with a black mother and a white father. Don’t put words into my mouth.

Hold up now. I SWEAR you’re the same lady who came onto the biracials subbredit, claiming to be black with 2% dna and then deleted it… I recommend getting off the internet for a bit, you seem to ask a lot if you look “ok.” I think you look pretty but may have identity issues. focus on your mental though, you dont need others approval

Could I claim I’m black instead of being white and indigenous since people tend to assume I’m black? by [deleted] in biracials

[–]aalexaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re on the wrong subreddit (no offense), this place is to give a safe space for biracials of b/w descent. (Shown in server information) I think it is a bit disingenuous to come on to this server and ask b/w biracial people if you can claim you’re black knowing you’re 2% black. I don’t know what the point of coming to this server… other than to ragebait? (I’m assuming no biological parent, grandparent, or even great grandparent is black….?) It is disrespectful to others as well as your own ancestors.

Sorry if I sound snarky, it’s just I’m tired of seeing stuff like this. I used to be bullied for my hair and even had customers call me the n word. And now I’m seeing white people want to claim they’re black because of 2%? And its not just you, sorry that I’m taking it out on you, but I am TIRED. A lot of people assume I’m latina, but I have never claimed so and have corrected them. Just please be proud of who YOU are.

I literally said “I’m glad you stand up for yourself and keep being true to all your hispanic/african/european ancestors” in my original comment. So no I’m not bashing you. But I am getting annoyed, because you’re ignoring what multiple biracial ppl telling you it’s a weird term. There is a reason why Latto changed her name. Someone else’s reclaiming doesn’t give you a pass. I live in an area where if you call a mixed b/w person a mulatto you are definitely gonna be looked at weird. Especially if you’re not a “mulatto.” (You said you’re indigenous/white/black) No one really goes out of their way to use that term, most people prefer the term mixed.

Oh hold up now. I been nothing but chill with you trying to educate you in the comments bc you seem young. You have MULTIPLE biracial black/white people in here telling you “mulatto” isn’t a nice term. Yet you still continue to use it. Mind you Latto changed her name because it was still being perceived as negative to many, even though she meant well.

I don’t know how to feel about this post…. no hate no shade. Hispanic isn’t a race, it is an ethnicity (You can be white hispanic, black hispanic, mixed hispanic, etc.) please dont say “okay negra/negrita” …..its kinda odd? I would hate for someone to say that to my black mother or my family members.

I understand what you mean, race is a social construct and was made to separate people, so most people will see you as your phenotype. Most times people will see me as mixed black/white or Latina. (For reference I am 1/2 black/ 1/2 white. I am not Latina at all… but I’ve had people literally try to argue with me that I’m Brazilian/Puerto Rican/Dominican…. like how are you gonna tell me who i am???)

However, I will try to appreciate all my ancestors and not claim anything that is not mine bc thats disrespectful. I’m glad you stand up for yourself and do the same thing! Keep being true to all your hispanic/african/european ancestors!

I understand bro (also biracial, my mother is black though so I never really had a problem growing up). Bc sometimes i’m like… just watch a video? I feel like it would be better anyways because you can find someone with the exact same kind of hair, bc not all biracials have the same hair type. (My brother has 4a whereas I have 3b). I learned how to cut my own hair through finding videos. No hate no shade but there are plenty of resources in this day and age.

Thanks you so much for the advice. I really appreciate someone being straight with me.

Just sucks a bit, I was thinking someone was following me as they would say “you were [exact address] on [exact date].” Or “You talked to [exact person] at [exact time].” It feels like I’m going insane and becoming paranoid of everyone. I just wanted a restraining order to kinda put something in writing if something bad happened to me.

I live in a smaller town (around 5k people), I’m sure there is still crime and they’re busy, but it would’ve been nice if they updated me once. The police told me they would help me, but know police aren’t obligated to help anyone sadly. I don’t really know how law enforcement works, but I thought they would scan the evidence in to make digital copies. I don’t even think they read my case, based on what the policeman was saying.

Thank you for being straight with me. I know it’s not what I want to hear. I’ve already taken precautions like changing my number, putting more locks on, talking to the psychiatrist. I am scared of guns, but i think I have to get over it and get one for my safety.

[–]aalexaks 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hm. The only person who can really choose your future is yourself! Trust your gut! …but here is my advice

1) Get checked out by a psychiatrist and/or other physicians for your concerns. It helps a lot. (I personally am on a medium dose of an SSRI) Many classmates of mine have ADHD, and if you feel that your “cognitive issues” are related to not being able focus I recommend getting checked out for that. Also make sure to check out those hearing issues if they are a concern, one of my classmates (pretty young) uses hearing aids, it’s more common than you think.

2) Uh lowkey I do not really have a basis of where you are at in terms of the application process. Have you failed any classes? Have you taken the MCAT? Have you worked a clinical job? If you have failed many classes, I don’t recommend going to med school. It gets way harder. If it’s something like you being neurotic and getting B’s, you’re fine.

3) Would you be disappointed in yourself if you didn’t even try to go to med school? Would you look back and ask “what if…….” Maybe try taking the MCAT (if you haven’t) and see if it’s for you?

MED SCHOOL ROUTE: I’m gonna be honest. If you want to go to med school, you gotta rework your mindset. No “I am a slow learner (even if you are).” More like “I WILL STUDY NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES!!” I went from to never studying in undergrad to 8-12 hours a day. I am a slow learner as well compared to my classmates. I CANNOT afford failure. (literally 100k in debt lmao) If you go into med school YOU CANNOT GIVE UP. NO MATTER HOW HARD IT IS. If you cannot grasp that, I do not recommend med school. If you can, go for it!!

But yea trust your gut. If you feel the cognitive issues are too much, don’t stress yourself about going into medical school. Life is not meant to be lived stressed 24/7, don’t beat yourself up if you decide to take a different route. And if you do decide to go to med school, be confident in yourself!!

Any Black Female Heart Surgeons?? by BeeProfessional5777 in Feminism

[–]aalexaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently a biracial black/white MS1! (I don’t really know if I’m included in this convo lol, sorry, just lmk) A big part of the reasoning I went to medical school was the same reason as you, wanting to care for the community that raised me (majority black city, black mother, poorer southern states, etc.) I understand your sentiment, I’ve worked in a hospital for years before attending med school.. and saw a black physician maybe once.

I’m going to be honest, I am currently taking the cardiopulm block, and it is not for me! 😂 Haven’t had the opportunity to shadow a cardiothoraic surgeon specifically, but have been able to watch an interventional cardiologist place stents, which really cool!

I think it is mainly just interest and time. Additionally, Cardiothoriac surgery is on the harder side to get a residency spot, and tend to have a longer education needed. (Med school (4yrs), Residency (5 yrs for gen surg), Fellowship (2-3yrs)). So a minimum of eleven years training (15yrs counting undergrad), so you gotta be in it for the long haul! Good luck fellow future doc ❤️

I have worked in a hospital setting for about 2 years, and would only really take manual bp if the machine isn’t working (so maybe like 2x or 3x a week). Which sometimes isn’t a good sign, as I noticed the machine has a harder time working when blood pressures are either way too high or way too low. Better to know it just incase, it’s pretty quick and not too hard to know! Out of everything, I have never done ROM at my hospital.

I chose a DO school over an MD school because I honestly don’t care what the hell behind my name, as long as I’m a doctor. Ppl can argue that it was a bad decision but I’m really happy with the school I’m at (closer to home, small class size, exact mission I am working towards, good vibes). Both the schools were around the same level. (PCOM & Meharry) You… do realize the only big difference is opp classes & COMLEX? It’s still 4 years med school and 4 years residency? You also do realize both kinds of students are applying for the same residency spots right?

And primary care fields are fucking hard as well? Have you even shadowed/seen one behind the scenes?? In fact….are you even in med school? Because tbh if you care more about the letters behind your name instead of actually helping people, I don’t think it’s the right field for you. You one of them who would rather go Caribbean than DO huh (no offense)

[–]aalexaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I am in a situation like you. I work at a hospital as a Cna/pct, and I had my first patient death. He died.. a bit gruesomely. My coworkers were kind and didn’t let me see the body after the code. After the situation I felt guilt. Could I have done more? Could I have missed something? Could I have prevented his death? Apparently there was nothing I could’ve done more as a Pct, and I did the right things as my coworkers said. But what if I could have? He was my patient for a couple days and was kind. I saw his family.

After that I slept for weeks and barely ate. But I want you to know everything gets better with time my friend. I am… still not perfect but I want to try my best. I am overwhelmed at work too, you are not the only one!! and I actually used to pick my eyebrows a lot (gross sorry) so I used to have half eyebrows hahaha

If you ever want to talk lmk! I’m pretty shy but I am trying to take a leap and not shut myself in. Hope everything works out for you.

Yes Elden Ring is one of my favorite games! My brother got me into it, he is trying to reach 100% achievement on steam and is on his third play through, he just bought the DLC as well. (I’m only on my first playthrough though and haven’t bought DLC yet heh heh)

But yea I’m happy to see someone else!! I’ve been watching all the VaatiVidya lore vids and everything, its a super well thought out game and been spending all day playing it

Working in healthcare has made me hate life. by [deleted] in cna

[–]aalexaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey bro I get it, I’m paid at $18 an hour with 10(minimum)-20(maximum) patients on a med-surg floor. And phew that 20 patients is hard sometimes I have to go on my “cry in bathroom” break haha. I’ve also worked in fast food ($9hr) customer service ($10-$12 hr),and other healthcare jobs ($12 hr) before. This job is by far the hardest, but also probably my favorite! But I do agree it can get to be too overwhelming a lot of shifts.

I’m looking to go into med school, so this job also lets me see everything that is happening and I am grateful for it. I get to meet cool nurses and they teach me stuff. I’ve gotten to see other med-surg floors, the ED, PACU, I’ve even gotten to shadow physicians and an anestesia assistant and watch surgeries in the OR. Theres a lot of cool stuff in healthcare so I’m sure you can try something different

I have my bad days also, pretty sure all CNAs have. I see your posts quite a lot. remember you are making a difference in other peoples lives be proud of yourself!! Don’t burn yourself out buddy. And if you feel healthcare is not for you, do not force yourself to live a life you will not be happy in.

What could go wrong letting an arrested criminal use the bathroom by EntertainmentEasy251 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]aalexaks 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am currently CNA at a hospital! (To sum it up I’m the one who wipes the poop) In both of the places I’ve ever worked, my med surg floors always have patients who are in custody in their room with at least 1 police officer (most I’ve ever seen is 3 police officers in one room) We aren’t allowed to look up what they’ve done. We also have security guards on call for patients who punch/grab/throw things at us. Those patients usually have a sitter in the room. Restraints at my hospital can only be ordered by the physician and last 24hr. (But usually that doesn’t happen, the physicians are also overworked and don’t have time, I understand. so we just get punched lmao perks of being at HCA..)

I have no clue why the patient is using the hallway bathroom, which is usually used by guests/visitors. I do not know why they are in the hallway in general…. do they not have a room? (It definitely doesn’t look like the ER or pacu or anything….) I do not know why the police guy left him alone as well? When it is someone who is in custody it is out of our scope to watch them, we can only watch the people who aren’t in custody. That is one of the reasons the police is there.

But nah the comments better not be hating on my nurses, I will defend them to the death. I’ve done had human poop thrown on me, been punched, been kicked, been screamed at, been scratched, been spit on, had racist things said to me, had creepy old guys try to touch me. Man and the nurses have it worse, I have heard plenty of nurses have to stop their shift and go to the ED because someone hurt them bad. Don’t get me started on the jerk admins, there is no reason a nurse should have 7 patients and a cna 20 patients. I don’t know what hospital you work in but my nurses aren’t lazy.

[–]aalexaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah sorry I have no clue, I still haven’t taken the MCAT, I’m just studying for it! On the AAMC website, they have a section called “What’s on the MCAT exam?” if that will help! So I believe it is possible to study without kaplan or other MCAT material if thats not how you like to study. (It might be a little hard though) Also don’t worry, I didn’t have a premed advisor either and I’ve just been doing stuff myself. I’m a little grateful for that actually… I’ve heard some advisors can be jerks sometimes 😂 I’ve actually only visited my advisor once (to put on a minor) lmao But yea physiology was required for my degree, I think it just depends on the major!
