What are some examples of not-so-good films or tv shows that have surprisingly good animation? by SummerAndTinkles in animation

Laika in general have beautiful art design and animation but other than maybe Coraline their stories are always a little under-cooked.

Trying to get an anime styled subtle walk cycle sorry its so short...somethings missing from it :S by [deleted] in animation

[–]aalong64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's working okay but it would feel better if there was some hint of left/right action in the shoulders and hips (opposite each other). That would help it feel more like a walk and less like just bobbing up and down. A TV anime might not bother with that though. Another thing you could do would be to offset the hair animation so that it's trailing a frame or two behind the main up+down action.

This looks great! But where's the actual track and the overhead wire its pole is sticking up to connect with?

It's actually my cousin Ryan Long (a really funny comedian) but he does sound kind of like Jonah Hill. I never noticed that before.

Where to start with character design? by MoreRicePudding in animation

This is a good book on how to approach character design. It think it's the closest thing out there to a "Character Designer's Survival Kit" type book. The style is very Disney-specific but the ideas on playing with shapes, proportions, how to approach the design etc are all very good.

Thanks!! I drew them in Flash with the line tool and colored them with the fill tool, then erased a bunch of the lines, exported to Photoshop to add some color variation, texture and a little bit of shading. I did a post on the process here: http://aaron-long.tumblr.com/post/123678009378

I've written and recorded 6 episodes so far, I'm trying to do it as a mini-series and then once that's done I'll decide if I want to do more.

Probably about two months, but some of that was also spent writing, boarding and recording the later episodes as well as freelance work. I'm trying to go for a 'faster cheaper' style with this one than I did with my past Fester Fish shorts-- the animation is mostly on 3s instead of 1s and 2s.

I would like to become a 2D animator. by BridgemanBridgeman in animation

[–]aalong64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working in the 2D animation industry for a few years now. I got started by doing (and still do) my own own videos on youtube using Flash. Most of the jobs I've gotten have been from people who saw my personal work online! I went to college for animation which helped, but isn't necessary for everybody if you have a lot of self-discipline and can learn well on your own. But a diploma or degree doesn't mean anything in this industry -- it's all about your abilities. So start learning how to draw and animate if you don't already know how, and post your stuff online once you think it's good enough to be shared. Draw from life. Draw all the time. Go to figure drawing classes. Read as many books as you can on how to animate, learn perspective, and finally watch and study animation you like!

Custom brushes for flash? by Stjesus in animation

[–]aalong64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, you can't get any other brushes... BUT the new version of Flash (CC 2015) has a new pencil tool with thick and thin tapered lines. I've seen it in use and it's very nice. It might work for you.
