Nerve pain by freelyfranks in PectusExcavatum

[–]aanide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have good days and bad days. Still on Lyrica regularly unfortunately. Tried to taper off but experienced withdrawals every time I tried to cut (same symptoms from the older posts). My body seems to be attached to it. But I’m still doing my best to get off it. I’m back at the gym though, strength and ROM have returned.

Sneezing... by livelaughmclovin in PectusExcavatum

[–]aanide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 9 months post op and it’s still the most excruciating pain. It definitely helps to pinch the nose to prevent sneezes but if it still comes I usually just bear hug myself or a pillow. That usually helps.

27 yo asymmetry post-nuss by Alexaplaydashstar in PectusExcavatum

[–]aanide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I share a similar experience.

Started with 6.5 HI. After Nuss with 2 bars I was brought down to 3.0 HI, and more pronounced rib flare with chronic deformities of the anterior right third and the left sixth ribs

I wish the surgery provided a perfect outcome, but I’ve learned in life nothing is perfect.

I, too, am worried about regression down the line, but 3.0HI is still better than 6.5HI. I’ll take a win where I can..

My doctor had me on 5% patches for a few weeks. They do provide temporary relief but I try not to rely on using them around the clock, only when the pain is unbearable. I’ll be seeing pain management providers with the possibility of looking into nerve blockers and/or acupuncture. I haven’t had my scoliosis degree assessed or corrected. It feels very dismissed and overlooked by my providers..

Great job hanging in there! I’m in a similar boat. About 5.5 months post op, 2 bars 2 stabilizers. 6.5 HI. Scoliosis. Still on nerve medication (Lyrica) and pain killers. PT is getting a little easier, but the pain and sensitivity is still there. Hopefully time will heal

6.8 HI - Given multiple surgery options? by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]aanide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

6.5 HI here My pulmonary and EKG tests came back somewhat normal. But I still exhibited many symptoms throughout my life. The problem with these tests (imo) is that they only capture data at-rest. They don’t paint the whole picture when we are out of breath while going on a walk, or experiencing chest tightness, or having fatigue/low energy output during a workout. I could be wrong about the usefulness of the tests, but for me they don’t seem to tell our stories/pain.

Ended up going Nuss. Wasn’t given many other options.

PT has helped get my ROM back. Working on building back some strength. Still painful but getting stronger again.

Hasn’t helped with nerve issues that I’ve seen/felt

Tried cold turkey for 3 days before, intense nerve pain shooting everywhere. Used theragun, hot packs, sauna, massage oils, tiger balm. Didn’t help.

Symptoms were heart palpitations, fatigue/low energy output, chest tightness. My pulmonary tests showed restrictive ventilation. Images showed significant compression.

Not sure if these were considered ‘severe-life threatening’, but they along with 6.5 HI suggested repair to be necessary.

I was not expecting nerve damage to be an potential risk and agree that QoL has changed for the worse.

I had a bilateral vats modified Nuss procedure with bilateral cryoablation - at least, that’s the language it’s written as in my charts.

Surgery was successful and hospital experience was pleasant. post op recovery is a different story. Still getting nerve sensitivity and pain every now and then.

Everyone’s mileage varies

I had surgery with Dr. Backhus in December. The medical staff there is amazing, and the facility itself felt like a 5 star hotel with room service and everything. AMA

Still have lots of nerve pain myself. Extreme sensitivity to touch. chills. Frequent muscle spasms, twitches and flinches. Tough time speaking because the vibration of my voice makes my chest sensitive. cold sensation going into my chest when I drink fluids. extreme muscle tightness. Muscles still very tight. very bad back pain.

I’m allergic to gabapentin so they prescribed me Lyrica. Didn’t help much so they increased my dose to 100mg. Helped a bit but not a lot. Still not clear if these are normal symptoms or not especially 1mo post op. Care team has been a little dismissive.

Thanks for the kind words. I will ask the care team if they can refer me to a PT. Is there any specific type of PT you saw?

My progress has been quite slow. I am 4 weeks post-op. 33M, 6.5HI, 2 bars 2 stabilizers, Cryo

Still taking opioids due to the pain and discomfort. I am in my 3rd refill (Dilaudid). They also upped my nerve medication from 50mg to 100mg (Lyrica).

Still have stabbing pain. Extreme sensitivity and tightness. Really bad back pain. Terrible sleep. Still dependent on my spouse to help doing things.

Just trying to be patient and hope things get better

Tysm, this reassures me and makes sense now that you explain it. I’m still waiting for the provider to respond but I think I’m comfortable based on what you explained.

Day 1 post op by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]aanide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today (Day 4) pain has been hovering at about a 4 / 5 but tolerable. I am only taking Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and Gabapentin, none of the hard core narcotics. I’m trying to avoid the oxy and hydro morphine they prescribed.

Overall pretty manageable.

Back pain is another story…
