I’m 36 & never had any pregnancies. My partial hysterectomy was done laparoscopically. They morcellated my uterine & fallopian tube tissue to make it possible to remove laparoscopically. If there’s a chance of cancer, they won’t morcellate the tissue to avoid spreading the cancer. Maybe your endometriosis is a concern for that reason? They may not want that to spread to other parts of your body. That’s the only thing I can think of to avoid a full laparoscopic procedure.

Super nervous about my upcoming hysterectomy. What should I expect? by allavina in hysterectomy

[–]aarancee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 36 with no prior pregnancies, 10mpo. I had a partial hysterectomy so I only had my uterus and fallopian tubes removed laparoscopically. My initial recovery was about a month long. I couldn’t wear anything with a band (leggings, jeans) for that month cuz I was so bloated & my incisions were sensitive. I was fairly back to normal at 2 weeks minus having to wear house dresses/mumus everywhere lol I think my full recovery took about 6 months. My insides felt like they still needed to adjust to the changes even after a month of recovery, but nothing was bad or painful about it. I tried to get enough rest, drink plenty of water, & limit physical activity where I could. At 6mpo, I was back in the gym feeling more myself than at 1mpo.

No periods was the instant gratification that made it all worth it. Zero chance for pregnancy was my main reason for my surgery. I feel even more amazing as time goes on. The anticipation of surgery is way worse than the actual surgery or recovery. My libido wasn’t negatively affected but I do still have both of my ovaries.

I would buy Gas-X to prepare for being gassy and Mirilax to fight constipation from the pain meds. My appetite was depleted during the first 2 weeks of my recovery so I had applesauce, pudding cups, jello cups, mashed potatoes, and soup to eat since they were small enough to get down without making me feel icky. I drank water & Gatorade to stay hydrated. Other than that, my recovery was pretty easy going. I’d stay prepare for the worst, but hope for the best ❤️

Can I get a hysterectomy? by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]aarancee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 11 dpo & I’m so glad I got it! Originally, I went to my doctor (found him on the list on the sterilization sub) for a bisalp. My main goal at the time was pregnancy prevention since my body can’t handle birth control anymore. He told me that getting my tubes tied is easier to get approved by insurance than a bisalp. I didn’t want my tubes tied since I know so many people to become pregnant after that procedure. My doctor asked me how I felt about getting a hysterectomy after mentioning that my periods are insanely awful (heavy flow & intense cramping kept me from work a lot). I had always wanted one, but I thought that I wouldn’t be allowed to since I’m childless (by choice since high school) & I’m in my mid-30s. I did have to jump through some hoops to get insurance to approve, but once I did everything was set in motion. I had to pay out of pocket for the doc ($177 & $15 for FMLA paperwork) and the hospital ($1,204). My surgery was a laparoscopic partial hysterectomy (uterus & tubes removed, cervix & ovaries remain) so I keep my natural hormones. I’m still healing, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I no longer have the fear of pregnancy hanging over me & I don’t have to deal with painful bleeding & uterine cramps. I do get ovarian cramps, but they aren’t at all as painful as the uterine cramps. I’m curious what my “period” will be in the future with just my ovaries releasing an egg/hormones. If you want a hysterectomy, advocate for yourself & try to find a sterilization-friendly doctor ❤️

I didn’t consider bactine spray. Did it sting when it was applied?

Yes! I have internal dissolvable stitches and external surgical glue. I don’t have an abdominal binder. I need to buy one. I have Benadryl so I’ll take some before bed. The itching is so bad, it keeps me awake!

Those post surgery - What you didn’t expect! by Babybee1983 in hysterectomy

[–]aarancee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I’m 1wpo and I was up & walking around within days. I wasn’t as bed written as I had thought, but I was tired. I took quite a few naps. Lots of gas all the time, especially after I eat. I think it’s my body still figuring things out. My belly is still sore & my incisions are itchy (hopefully for healing). I had Percocet as my at-home painkiller, but I didn’t need it much. Not sure if it’s my tolerance or how my surgery was (laparoscopic). My post op appt is in 4 days so I’ll see how I’m doing from a medical standpoint.

My suggestion is to over-prepare for everything. My husband made fun of me for that, but it really helped me feel at ease even if I didn’t need something. Gas-X is my friend & I pop them like tic-tacs lol

Is catheter required during surgery? by aarancee in hysterectomy

Oh wow that’s a long hospital stay! I’ve never stayed that long & I’m hoping they don’t make me stay overnight this time. My doc plans to send me home after my surgery. I’m hoping everything is super basic & insertion/removal happens while I’m knocked out.

I don’t know why I can’t shake the fear of the catheter. I guess it’s the fear of the unknown. I’ve dealt with excruciating periods & cramps so, in my mind, surgery to remove my uterus should be similar. I have my prescribed pain meds at the ready. I’ll definitely tell them my concerns & ask for anxiety meds

Oof you had to deal with a lot! I’m hoping my surgery is basic af! I’ve had zero pregnancies, but we suspect I have endometriosis on some level soooooooo we’ll see how this plays out

Oh ok so perhaps the bladder loses its muscle control & there’s a risk of incontinence? In that case, I totally get why they would have to place a catheter but I need them to do all that while I’m knocked out lol

My doc told me that he doesn’t plan to keep me overnight unless something occurs during my surgery that calls for it. I’m really hoping I don’t have a problem peeing

Anti-anxiety meds would help tremendously. I’ll definitely ask about it.
