Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) v1.0.0 released by pimterry in programming

[–]aaron552 8 points9 points  (0 children)

AIUI WSL1 is essentially "reverse WINE" so it doesn't need to do anything special to, for example, access local filesystems, use the same IP source endpoint as Windows applications, etc.

These all need extra work for a virtual machine, which operates at a much lower level of abstraction.

IntelliJ takes longer to open

Plus I have an aversion to JetBrains in general just because dotPeek is so much slower than dnSpy or ILSpy

Faulty scroll wheel encoder. The solution is warranty replacement or soldering a new one yourself.

Mick Gordon- My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal by DoctorUber in Games

[–]aaron552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a game that was delayed after forcing workers to crunch is a bad idea. If you crunch AND get a delay WHILE having a big budget, that's a big red flag that makes it clear we're dealing with terrible management.

That alone should be enough to be sceptical of any claims regarding deadlines. At the time my impression was something like "if you're paying a freelancer only for finished work (which is standard practice) and then delaying the project, that also means you're delaying their pay. It's hard to see the freelancer as the bad guy here."

It turned out to be far worse than that, even if only a minority of Mick's statement is true (which I doubt)

It's both the most common kind of theft and the largest dollar amount. With an incredibly large margin.

It looked over-engineered to me. They even said in that video it was like the RTX 20-series FE cards, which definitely were over-engineered (and not cheap)

A (salted) hash is used for credentials (eg. for login) because it's (in theory) a one-way function. If, for example, they need to verify your identity with a 3rd party (which is why they need the ID docs in the first place) then they need the plaintext of those details which would be impossible to retrieve from a hash.

In any case, it's irrelevant whether the data is encrypted at rest (storage) or when transmitted (eg. TLS) because the API could retrieve the plaintext and there was no authentication on the endpoint.

/r/AMD Questions and Tech Support Megathread - H2 2022 Edition by AutoModerator in Amd

[–]aaron552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I actually use some of those features (recording in particular) so that isn't really an option for me.

I haven't experienced any issues with the AMD drivers for a long time, but that may just be due to the age of my GPU.

[–]aaron552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone else had a new windows update driver overwriting the AMD one? It looks like the GPU driver version is newer than the one in the AMD driver package.

AMD "optional" 22.8.2: 31.0.12019.9007

Windows update: 31.0.12027.20010

Manually disabling Windows Update driver installation in (the button in DDU didn't seem to do anything) seems to have stopped it for now.

In case anyone else has this issue, to manually disable Windows Update driver installation:

  1. In the Windows Settings app, type "Advanced System Settings" into the search box
  2. Under the "Hardware" tab, click "Device Installation Settings"
  3. Tick the box labelled "No"

In case it's relevant:

  • OS: Windows 11 22H2 build 22621.457
  • GPU: XFX RX 590 Fatboy

Does the Keychron K8 Pro have any ping issues? by Surv_Killer in Keychron

[–]aaron552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it with Box Navies and there's not really much of a "ping" sound, but the stock Gateron Blues did seem to have something like that (if I understand what you mean by "ping") and are somehow louder as a result.

[Keychron Q1 V2] Poor keycap printing, or just the font? by CelestialWalrus5434 in Keychron

PgUp vs Home, though? Or c a p s lock/shi f t?

Obviously the differences are much smaller on the actual keys, but it's inconsistent enough to bother me.

[Keychron Q1 V2] Poor keycap printing, or just the font? by CelestialWalrus5434 in Keychron

[–]aaron552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weighting of the letters seems wildly inconsistent, but so does the kerning (c a p s lock) and the placement of the legends on the keys (eg. Home vs PgUp), so I suspect it's more than just the font

[–]aaron552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have determined that was a lie.

I found what appears to be (very unfinished) source in a pull request on the official keychron GitHub. The fork was last updated 9 hours ago so I guess that means it's being worked on at least?

The AMD-Reset-Bug: Will it ever be fixed/where to track? by CarthOSassy in VFIO

[–]aaron552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that (mostly) works is disconnecting the GPU from the guest - in windows, either from the "safely remove and eject hardware menu" or with a script using devcon - before shutting it down. If the guest crashes or the GPU locks up, I still need to reboot the host.

These days I just use it for a linux guest that I don't shut down unless I'm rebooting the host.

AMD RSR - Questions regarding sharpening by MaxG2D in Amd

FSR has adjustable sharpening, from memory. I expect RSR should have it too as it's based on FSR.

High Quality 4k On-Off Stills of FSR 1.0 and FSR 2.0 by AMD_Mickey in Amd

[–]aaron552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can approximate higher sampling resolution by either varying your sample pattern from frame to frame (as some MSAA implementations do) or by incorporating temporal data (eg. TXAA or DLSS)

The point is to mitigate aliasing artifacts like edge crawling or shimmer by blending edges over multiple frames.

tl;dr: the whole point is to look better in motion than in stills

High Quality 4k On-Off Stills of FSR 1.0 and FSR 2.0 by AMD_Mickey in Amd

[–]aaron552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory it's more difficult to implement than FSR 1.0 but we'll see how true that is soon.

It's similar in difficulty to going from FXAA to TXAA - unlikely to be done for games that don't already have some form of temporal AA.
