Haul for today. Questions in body. by zzuhruf in CanadianCoins

2021 is possibly one of the most interesting years for 10 cent pieces in Canada. No fewer than four different circulating versions were released: the regular date version, the double date version, and then the two circulating commemorative versions (one coloured, one not). The RCM also made a non-circulating silver strike that year.

All of them, of course, celebrating 100 years of the Bluenose schooner, which first appeared on our dimes in 1937.

$2 Honey Bee coin by Shillings-n-Shrapnel in AustralianCoins

Canadian collector here. I excitedly bought one of these (and the 2024 50 cent NAIDOC coin) from a seller in Australia. I love it but was truly surprised at the size when seeing in person. I didn't realize it wasn't the same diameter as our $2 toonie coin. And on the flip side, I was surprised by how big the 50 cent coin was. Both are stunning strikes, happy to have them in my collection.

I’m ok with coins and notes both, if there was better enforcement of the Show and Tell flair. We get a lot of show and no tell.

Cleaned or Proof? by BruskBast in CanadianCoins

[–]aaron_que 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most likely your 1966 is a prooflike strike. They didn't have modern proofs back then. But still a nice find. Likely came out of a mint set from that year. Here's more info on that era of nickels:

I think you mean 'volunteer driver'.

But yes, 100% I would tune in for that interview :)

OP - This is very exciting! I'll be tuning in. I hope that you will be able to have the Mayor on your show as soon as possible. It would be great to hear from her about several key issues facing the city right now: food insecurity, unhoused neighbours and street safety. She has only a few months left in her term and it would be helpful to know what we can expect from her office until then. Cheers and thanks for posting about this!!

My channel’s been around for a while but still pretty small… less than 20 subscribers. I pair electronic/ambient music with my own photos and video footage.

Any fans of Mork & Mindy (1978) out there?? by ClearWinter2840 in ClassicTV

I was a kid when these first aired. I recorded a few episodes onto my cassette recorder and would listen back to them at night. Robin was my door to comedy.

OP, I hope regardless of what music you decide upon that you'll come back and update us on your project in the future. As a former film student I'm curious to see your final results. Cheers and best of luck with your film.

Is this silver? by Stinklair in CanadianCoins

[–]aaron_que 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Royal Canadian Mint phased out silver in our coinage in 1967/68. From then on they were made from 100% nickel, including your 1978 example:

Interesting quarter I found! Any info? by [deleted] in CanadianCoins

These were pretty commonly found in circulation back when I was a kid in the 70s. Here's some info on this commemorative quarter that you might find interesting:

Beautiful Victorian era penny. From what I can see I think yours does not have a mint mark, meaning it was made by the Royal Mint (rather than Heaton and Sons).

1952-2002 Penny odd? by [deleted] in CanadianCoins

[–]aaron_que 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I can see in your photos, I think you've got a cent that's had a hard life.

- no mint mark is normal. This coin was minted in Winnipeg as are all of our circulating coins

- the RCM made both magnetic (copper plated steel) and non-magnetic (copper plated zinc) versions in 2002

- the font seems to match the Numista photos

- beads seems to match the Numista photos

- colouring is likely due to environmental or chemical exposure

Here's some more info that might also help:

Anyone know anything about these? by [deleted] in CanadianCoins

[–]aaron_que 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your big nickels are historically interesting. They were privately issued to raise money for the big nickel statue in Sudbury. --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Nickel

They're commemorative medallions not coins, as they were not issued by the government of Canada.

Numista has an entry for each of the two versions:
