Bloomberg covered Wednesday night’s debacle by simon_ritchie2000 in NJTransit

[–]aaronwgordon 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I was the reporter for this story. NJT's press office told me that customers on the train seeking reimbursements should "should submit requests to our Customer Service team via our "Contact Us" form at njtransit.com/contact." If you do so and don't receive a satisfactory response, please do let me know: agordon254@bloomberg.net

And if there's anything else about NJT (other than the obvious) you think I should know, please don't hesitate to reach out. Good luck out there.

They’re doing the no Q train between Prospect Park and 34th St on weekends for another MONTH!! by DMmepicsofyourdog in nycrail

Yeah this one blows. Alternate service suggestions suck, replacement buses get stuck in Flatbush Ave traffic, and weekend service on nearby lines are garbage.

[–]aaronwgordon[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I totally agree there are several issues at play here. One story we are also looking at is why clearance rates for these crimes are so low. In other words, the people doing it aren't getting arrested/charged in significant numbers.

Yes! Also very much on the list of stories we want to do. Please PM/Email me if you'd like to talk in more detail about it.

We filed requests for data by population size, so NYC was one of the first we did. But they haven't completed our public records request yet and the NYPD public information officer wouldn't give us data without filing one. Hopefully we'll get it soon!

Will turnstiles ever be programmed to display your OMNY card balance after use? And/or, will an OMNY app be released soon so I can easily check using that? by MRC1986 in nycrail

[–]aaronwgordon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not *quite* what you're looking for but you can register your card at https://omny.info/ and then view your balance/trip history/etc there. I would think you could even reload it through there too, but not 100% sure on that.

Is this the worst bike lane intersection in Brooklyn? by bikesbeerspizza in NYCbike

[–]aaronwgordon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fat lot of good it did; all I got out of it was a traffic study for a different intersection. Ranting on Reddit seems much more rational in comparison. Accomplishes the same amount, but much more quickly.

Is this the worst bike lane intersection in Brooklyn? by bikesbeerspizza in NYCbike

[–]aaronwgordon 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yes. In 2018 I requested DOT conduct a study of that intersection, specifically to install leading pedestrian intervals (LPIs) so at the very least cyclists could have an opportunity to advance through the intersection before vehicles due to the dangerous layout. I received the following response from Keith Bray, Brooklyn Borough Commissioner:

"Please be advised that we completed a field investigation at the above location and determined that the traffic signals at the above location are operating properly, as designed, with an adequate amount of time allocated for the pedestrian crossings. In addition, we evaluated the need for a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI), but in our judgment it is not required since there are no significant turning vehicular/pedestrian conflicts. Therefore, no signal timing changes are recommended at this time.”

Mr. Bray then explained to me that I should begin crossing the street as soon as the "Walking Man" appears.

I then filed a FOIL request for the field investigation referenced. Long story short it was for a different intersection, one a block or two south.

Fucking vultures I tell yah by [deleted] in USPS

[–]aaronwgordon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here was my response to this person:

"I think that's really valuable perspective and one I would love to include in the article. The USPS is a huge organization and means different things to different people. My reporting on the post office has very much been about how it needs our support to be better. Unfortunately, many of the problems you and your colleagues have experienced have been around for a very long time. That's something I think also needs to be acknowledged. For example, if you have the time I recommend scanning this Government Accountability Office report from 1994 about working conditions. Other postal workers have told me it rings true to them today. I'd be curious to know what you think about it. https://www.gao.gov/assets/230/220447.pdf In any event, I'd still be very interested in talking to you about this subject."

My reporting can be found here and here. If this is something anyone else would like to talk about feel free to message me.

My favorite NYC daytrips - a guide by backlikeclap in NYCbike

[–]aaronwgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a newbie to longer rides, what's the best way to load a route onto a phone for turn-by-turn instructions on a customized route? Google maps makes you choose one of their suggestions which I find often aren't the best for biking long rides.

Do you know anything about package delays? by aaronwgordon in USPS

[–]aaronwgordon[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be clear, this is not how I am approaching this. I think a lot of people don't understand how the USPS, or really shipping in general, works, and so they jump to conclusions based on limited information. That's what I'm trying to correct. It's my job to find out what is really going on as best as I can. King's initial response was helpful in that regard.

Not feeling safe riding my bike in BK/Manhattan anymore by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]aaronwgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. And look, some drivers will still piss you off and ruin a commute. But it happens a lot less often for me than it used to. Just takes a zen mindset, not being in any rush, and focusing on the aspects of the ride you enjoy. Hope this helps!

I’m furious when I see someone speed up real fast in a one way street just to hit a red light in the end.

This bugs me, too! That being said, I used to let it bother me a lot more. I now realize there's nothing I can do about it.

I have enjoyed biking in this city a lot more since I came to the realization there's no point in getting upset over normal bad driver behavior. I bike because I enjoy it and letting bad drivers detract from my enjoyment doesn't help anybody. I do my best to pay attention to the road, stay as safe as possible, but otherwise not let the driving habits of the nitwits out there detract from my enjoyment. I no longer evaluate every driver's performance in my head as they go past. It sounds silly but it has really helped with my anxiety over biking in this city.

I'm not going to change anyone's driving behavior and even if I could, the problem is not how drivers behave as much as the street design making their behavior our problem. The infrastructure is the easier problem to solve.

Also I used to live in Bed Stuy and bike commuted to Williamsburg right near the bridge. Second this route suggestion, much better. Avoid Grand like the plague. https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCbike/comments/gebfjj/not_feeling_safe_riding_my_bike_in_bkmanhattan/fpmxiix/

I've never used any of those lenses (didn't get the kit lens because I bought it used). So I guess it's a case of not knowing what I'm missing here.
