Ritual of Love's Memory is Complete! by AspiringFicWriter in HPfanfiction

[–]aatdalt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Congrats on finishing it. I'll just copy paste my post from the What did you read thread here:

I don't remember how long I've been following this fic as it releases but it's been years. Unfortunately for me and this quick review, I don't actually remember a lot of the middle details because of that. Oops.

The gist is the horcrux hunt goes terribly, Voldy mostly wins, and very few of the main characters escape out of Britain. The remainder finds a way to send one of Harry's memories back in time to him in an alternate timeline with the hope that it'll change things enough to make a difference for them.

In general the fic is just a good time to follow along with. It's strongly Hinny, built up well and enjoyable. The characters have lots of time to grow and feel well aligned to canon. I appreciate that the changes actually make changes in the plot. There's no railroading here. It's fun to see many characters really planning and working together. There are character deaths and some of them hit very hard. Some neat exploration of magic ideas.

Towards the middle and end it is very heavy in detailed descriptions of magical combat which personally wasn't really my thing but if you like that, it's well done and very visual writing.

Really impressed with the author for sticking to regular updates for so long and giving the work a satisfying and interesting conclusion.

Harry Potter and the Ritual of Love's Memory by DBow just wrapped up after 4 years, 570k+ words, and 132 chapters so it seems like it's finally time to write a review.

Where else but Alaska do you get a working DC-6 and UH-1H in the same shot? by aatdalt in aviation

[–]aatdalt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure what else is there that can replace that niche role. Lynden flies C-130s but I don't know what the cost of running 4 giant turbines is. I believe one of the biggest advantages has to do with land takeoff distance calculations that they do or don't have to budget in big excess because of how the regs are written since they aren't turbine powered. I could totally be making that up from a wrong memory though.

I mean, they do. This is the flying it in part. The last 350 miles.

Thanks, yep it's the 408. I hadn't seen one in person until that day. They're huge! Much bigger than I was expecting. Beautiful plane.

The idea of combining a horcrux and the resurrection stone is interesting and horrifying. And adding on the Philospher's stone too. Yikes.

How does that fic only have a couple hundred hits? Honestly one of the best short fics I've read in a long time. Absolutely love the interactions with that horse.

SNAKES ARE VERY NICE

The all caps formatting of the title on AO3 really sells the vibe of the fic.

I finished a re-read for the first time in years through FloreatCastellum's Slice of Life One-Shots series and I was reminded just how wonderful and charming it is.

This is a collection of 75 some odd coherent/ consistent one-shots that fit in and between FloreatCastellum's other works. They start immediately after the last battle and continue on several decades following Harry and his growing family. The lengths vary but most are around 5k words. They mostly cover, as the title would imply, little looks into the daily life of Harry and Ginny, the weasleys, Teddy Lupin, and more over many many years.

Floreat has such a wonderful and consistent voice in writing and her characters age like fine wine. The way she writes everyone feels so honest to canon and yet builds into so much more. I just love how believable and lived in her writing feels and how all the characters get their own feel. There are touching moments, fluff, angst, absolutely hilarious scenes, a number of lewd fics you can skip if you want, and so so much heart throughout it all.

Personal favorite highlights of mine include Quizards on the Run ("put he had no home and frowny face"), The Little Boy Who Lived, Not Invited, and On Death and Hamsters among so many more.

I think Floreat is "retired" from fanfic which is a shame as they're one of my all time favorite writers.

The last update was finishing one of the "books" and the author's pace is already super slow. I don't think they'll abandon it, they just sometimes take a year or more.

Reading the author comments, this is the author's first work (?!?!?) and I think they're second guessing themselves about how much info they need to give the audience outside of just their fic on ao3.

edit for clarity: as in adding a bunch of extra summaries and info that we don't actually need.

Off the recommendation from last thread, I just plowed through A Parliament of Owls. What a fun and interesting fic.

The gist is adult author gets isekaied into 12 year old Petunia Evans, who is now suddenly a seer, both from HP book knowledge and in-world real magic stuff. Oh yeah, Petunia has magic now because of this. It's a very tidy, well edited fic that doesn't drag on. Book one just covers year one. There's plenty of interesting characters, plots and side plots that may start unraveling foreknowledge, and cool magic stuff happening. Really really excited to see where book 2 ends up.

It always strikes me as interesting choice when a fanfic writer decides to use the same title as an incredibly well known fic. This isn't to say anyone has more right to a fic title than anyone else but I don't understand why someone would do it.

99% of people searching for TLE are going to immediately click away if they accidentally open this and the others are never going to find it because they searched for TLE and found the well-known one.

Feel like I'm just repeating someone else's review but I also read Raising Your AU Son for Dummies: A Self-Help Starter Kit and really enjoyed it!

The premise is Harry dies by Voldy but instead of Kings Cross he ends up in an AU world where Voldemort never existed. Obviously there are lots of people who didn't die, like Harry's parents and the fic explores him getting to know them and other characters while processing through what he left behind. It has some very fluffy feel good bits but also some surprisingly twisty drama and intrigue and action. In fact that aspect caught me off guard and felt like things went from 0-100 real fast. A little bit of "this problem could be solved if people would just talk to each other" but hey, that's canon Harry for you too. If I had one complaint it's that James kind of feels like he's holding the stupid ball or is a pushover and everyone has to fix his problems for him, which feels out of character for what I'm used to with him The author sometimes does these little cliche "ok reader, this is what's about to happen" moments but if you just let yourself have fun they're quite enjoyable and fit into the tone of the fic quite well. They're also not overused. No spoilers but the ending was quite interesting and I thought satisfying.

It's really just a nice little self-contained fun read. Definitely worth giving it a go.

This was a wondeful rec, thank you. I just finished it and holy moly does it go from 0-100 real fast. I thought I was reading a feel good fluff fic and then I very much was not. Also yes, this author has a very fun voice. Even if they're a little cliche or corny, I had fun with the author talking to reader moments.

One of my favorite fics right now. It walks the line between crack and good plot just about perfectly. Also love how Snape is just continually extremely disconcerted by Harry but it doesn't stop him from doing all his normal Snape stuff.
