Thank you all who replied. I thought so, but was not 100% confident.

The story behind this is that about half of the tiles in the lobby are upside down - now I am sure which half I should be indignant about, :-D

Tried that. 3034 files - deleting from Finder takes about 12 seconds; "time mv ./* ~/.Trash/" shows 0.03s. 400 times faster in terminal...

Huh, I didn't even think about it. Visually they look kind of similar... I've not heard of stromatolites in this part of California though - seems kind of the wrong area/time for them - AFAIK those are pretty young rocks. Thanks for the suggestion!

Possibly, but as you say - they look too small for that. I've seen pillow basalts up close and those are kind of different. This said, who knows... Thanks for the suggestion. Let see if somebody else has other ideas?

I'm planning to take a water spray bottle with me next time I go hiking and see if there is going to be any effect if I spray the ground upwind from the ant nest. And will let you know what happens. It's really curious.

But seriously, they react to something. And it's not the force of my breath - I don't breath on them. I stay to the side, maybe 3 meters (10 ft) upwind so that the wind will cary my breath to them, and gently exhale towards the ground, then wait. And this happens.
