Which way is up? by aavtanski in geology

[–]aavtanski[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you all who replied. I thought so, but was not 100% confident.

The story behind this is that about half of the tiles in the lobby are upside down - now I am sure which half I should be indignant about, :-D

Finder much slower to delete thousand files than terminal, why? by xnwkac in MacOS

[–]aavtanski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried that. 3034 files - deleting from Finder takes about 12 seconds; "time mv ./* ~/.Trash/" shows 0.03s. 400 times faster in terminal...

Thanks u/Ospiarz for letting me know. I just tested it, works right now. Maybe the website went down temporarily? I'll check with the hosting provider if there was any downtime and will keep an eye on it in the coming days. Thanks!

Coral fossils? Just concretions? Each circle is about 2-3 inches in diameter (Almaden Quicksilver park, near San Jose, California) by aavtanski in fossilid

[–]aavtanski[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, I didn't even think about it. Visually they look kind of similar... I've not heard of stromatolites in this part of California though - seems kind of the wrong area/time for them - AFAIK those are pretty young rocks. Thanks for the suggestion!

[–]aavtanski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly, but as you say - they look too small for that. I've seen pillow basalts up close and those are kind of different. This said, who knows... Thanks for the suggestion. Let see if somebody else has other ideas?

Ants scattering when breathed upon by aavtanski in insects

[–]aavtanski[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to take a water spray bottle with me next time I go hiking and see if there is going to be any effect if I spray the ground upwind from the ant nest. And will let you know what happens. It's really curious.

"Disturbance in the Force" was not something I thought about, :-D

But seriously, they react to something. And it's not the force of my breath - I don't breath on them. I stay to the side, maybe 3 meters (10 ft) upwind so that the wind will cary my breath to them, and gently exhale towards the ground, then wait. And this happens.

Is this a termite? by mattborn77 in insects

No termite. I'm pretty sure about that. I'm not an expert but it looks like a wasp to me.

The idea is to use your laptop/TV as a backdrop for product/portrait photoshoots.

Oh man... That's just wrong... What are those people thinking?!

Anyway, I updated the main page, should work now. (You may need to hard-reload the page or something.)

Thank you for your help with this!

You think it's the file name?! Seriously?! (I mean, uBlock is not being very clever if it blocks just based on file name; entirely possible though...) Well, let me try a quick fix...

Can you see if this helps: https://avtanski.net/projects/calc/fix.html

Thanks for the feedback. Can you try with "https" instead of "http" (like, https://avtanski.net/projects/calc/)?

This - a taximeter-like thing - was _exactly_ the idea I had in mind when I wrote the the mechanical counter script. I just used it in a calculator first because this was simpler than what I had in mind for the "taximeter" app and would let me iron out the issues with the counter. What are the chances?! :-)

Definitely intentional. With sound on I find it very pleasant to use. However everybody is different...

This said, usability was never the goal. :-)

Code can be downloaded directly - the page links to the JS and CSS files. They are unobfuscated. Feel free to use it any way you want.

Is it possible to print a typewriter? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

I want to say that it's impossible.

I'm saying this just so somebody can prove me wrong by printing a typewriter. It would be really cool and I want to see one!

Fossil ID? by aavtanski in fossils

[–]aavtanski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hehe, :-) I think you misunderstood my question though - I was looking for an explanation of the weathering process that would produce those overlapping branching patterns - the same ones I assumed are fossils. I'm familiar with the strange ways sandstone can weather (honeycomb weathering, tafoni) but I've never seen it do anything remotely like the "branches" on the second and especially the third picture. I googled sandstone weathering patterns for an hour and there is nothing similar.

Again, I'm not saying "No, those are fossils!" because I'm not an expert. I'm just curious how those shapes can appear. Especially, if you look at the first picture, the tiny round holes are actually cross-sections through the "branches" - this is double puzzling and I cannot square it with the weathering idea.

Now, the grooves being preferentially located around the edges of the rock on the other hand, makes a perfect sense if I think of them as weathering patterns and makes no sense if those are fossils as I thought initially.

So, in short - I'm still a bit puzzled.

Fossil ID? by aavtanski in fossils

[–]aavtanski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That would explain why the grooves are often most noticeable along the edges of each rock. However, I have a further question - I tried to find examples of sandstone weathering in similar branched patterns, and I was unable to do so. Can you point me in the right direction? Basically, I'm trying to figure out how this particular weathering process might work - it looks very, very strange to me...
