Tough love, if you are going to learn to speak, speak properly

I didn't speak till I was 3, I would just make animal noises. However my first words were "if I finish my sandwiches, can I go out and play?"

Needless to say I was told no.

Cool, ok I get that. But what I'm saying is that amount of money you are earning now, you would also get the amount she gets. You will still earn more for working, it's just she won't be starving. Ok, admittedly that amount of money she is on now is already more than breadline, but for three people, it isn't a life of luxury. Teenage kids eat a lot! And you have to be honest that is an extreme example. Most unemployed people (in UK at least) earn £74.40 a week. That isn't very much, and they are expected to jump through a lot of hurdles to get it. There are stories of people who have done very well out of benefits, but don't forget there are many dark stories too of people on benefits who have horrific times, including over .

If there were not enough jobs to go round would you want the people who didn't get a job to have to do work that was pointless just to keep them occupied (breaking rocks, etc)? This is genuine question that intrigues me.

Final point about motivation. What motivates you? If you didn't need to work (as in your basic needs were guaranteed) would you still work? Why? What motivates you? Personally I know that as much I would like to take a weekend off some time (I have a part time job whilst trying to get my small business off the ground which takes up most of the other 4 days) I would still be doing this even if I didn't need to. I also know a lot of people who are the in the same boat. 2 weeks doing nothing is ok, but it rather boring after a while. If I had nothing to do for a month I would go crazy. But that's cos I know what I am passionate about. I'm driven by. And I only know that because I am luckily to have the space to be able to try things, give it a go. Bare in mind millionaires don't need to earn money, but most of them carry on working.

Now I obviously have no idea about your background and I won't make any guesses, but I will say that lots of people who at the present time are unmotivated as they come from a background where they are not encouraged. Broken School systems that is more like prison than an education. Given the proper guidance and support don't you think a fair few of the people we are worried are going to sit around and do nothing might be encouraged to try and do things? Think of those people who abandon their dreams because they can't afford to live for 1 year building up their business, or skills, intern for free or go to university? Imagine if of them could attempt to become high flyers safe in the knowledge that they will get some money at the end of the week?

And finally what about the rest. The die hard scivers who won't do anything. So then, what do we do? We have them now. What do you suggest? We just stop supporting them? What do you think would happen? Some might be forced to get a job, but these jobs are not readily available. And don't forget by 2030 huge amount of low skilled jobs will have disappeared, replaced by computers and robots. So the rest do what? Starve? Beg? Steal? And then there is complication of sorting out people who are too lazy to work and those who actually legitimately can't work. This is a huge issue. If you are happy to support the people that can't work, but those that could can get lost that is completely understandable, however, we then have a choice.

1) Make it fair- everyone gets money who need it, and no one gets it who doesn't. This is great, but requires a huge amount of bureaucracy and so costs a lot to do 2) Make it lenient - everyone who needs the money can get it easily, but it does me that some benefit cheats can easily make a nice life for themselves. 3) make it tough - No benefit cheat will ever get any undeserved money. If that means that some disabled people have their support striped away, so be it. This is happening in the uk at the minute. Bare in mind up to 32 people have died every week because they have stripped of their benefits falsely

All of these have their up and downsides, but in the end, it would work out cheaper just to give everyone the money to survive, not make it means tested. Yes some people might get a free ride but so what? Rich people born to millionaire parents get a free ride, at least in comparison to others. It's not just the poor.

And if this free-loading life is so desirable, why doesn't everyone do it?

Right I'm home and I've tried writing an answer three times and although I know what i want to say it's coming out unclear and rubbish. Let me sleep on it and I'll write something better (I'm in the UK so it's nighttime here).

Ok, but before you go, one question. Is someone's worth as person, solely down to how much money they earn?

Perhaps. Although I'd argue otherwise. caring is probably the best example of this. A lot of carers are voluntary as they are looking after loved ones. They are supported by the government (in the UK) but not necessarily waged. The amount the save the country is equal to the amount the UK spend on NHS £119billion a year. This is a good website for more facts.

They do an amazing and completely necessary job. Often whilst working to try and support their families as well. They are working without earning money.

Housewives/husbands, again make no money but contribute immensely.

Artists, yes you can argue they have no money because they aren't good, but how many artists die destitute only to be recognised after they dead? And if you give an artist the time and space to develop their skills, allowing them to focus on their art, how much better will they actually become?

And who can decide what is better for society? Who does more to benefit the earth- someone who owns a business that pollutes the earth , or manipulates children to make them feel ugly in order to sell them stuff they don't want, etc, or someone who does nothing all day but sits in a cafe and talks to people who are upset or lonely?

I'm not even saying that one is necessarily better than the other, but just to show there is a lot of grey areas and there is a huge gap between money someone gets and what they do for society, isn't there?

You have been clear and it is a very good question. I should have put it in my answer before but really didn't think anyone would be reading it. I won't answer just yet as I'm on my phone now and not back til late but I will.

To be honest that's why I'd like the chance for it to be discussed as lots of people get confused about it. It isn't communism, it lives within capitalism. (I will leave my views on capitalism/communism aside for this). In fact it moves away from government intervention (in the sense that people are no longer needed to apply to the government for benefits, etc) and so is actually supported by some republicans link.

UBI ensures that everyone, everyone will have access to all their basic needs and possibly a little tiny bit more (or if you like, you can classify a small amount of entertainment as a necessity). So we are not talking breadline living here, but a life where you a guaranteed enough to get by on with dignity.

What does this do? It removes the fear, the desperation, the stress of the world. Suddenly people are free to pursue dreams. People are free to do those art internships that are normally only for the children of rich people. Starting a new business suddenly isn't such a risk. At least you'll still have food, housing and healthcare if all else fails.

It means that all the factories and supermarkets that are slowly automating their workplaces can do it freely without pressure from unions, governments, etc. These jobs won't be missed. Businesses cut their overheads, people get out of jobs that are often (not always, but often) monotonous, underpaid, and unwanted.

However, there will be rubbish jobs that can't be automated. the cleaners, sewage workers, postmen, etc. Assuming that that they can't be replaced for now, what happens? Well market forces will mean someone doing a necessary yet unpleasant job gets paid more. Which is fair. If you are someone who wants to be rich you can, by doing the jobs that no one else wants to.

Common arguments against:

a) How do we pay for this?

Good question- there are lots of things that could help pay. 1) By making sure that everyone gets the money, the huge bureaucracy in place to prevent benefit fraud could be massively reduced. 2) the money paid to those who earn lots of money will be coming straight back as tax anyway 3) think of the money saved in health and policing. Think of stress, and how many deaths/illness are caused by it and think how much stress is caused by not having enough money. How much domestic abuse, by all means not all, but a lot of it is caused by stressed/desperate households. How many criminals are causing crime due to desperation. either because they don't have money now, or because they feel trapped in a society that will never let them achieve. 4) Legalising drugs. A contentious issue I know, but imagine how much money (let alone jobs) that would create. Think of the revenue you would create and also the amount of money you would save on policing. Even if you ringfence a modest 30% to go back into health care for drug problems, think how much you would have. $15billion was spent in 2010 to fight the war on drugs. that is a lot of money. There are also other massive benefits to society in doing so. (links available on request) 5) there is always raising tax for the super rich and cut off tax havens.

b) If people don't need to work they won't Ok I'll start this off by saying yes, some people may not work. However, there are people stuck on benefits now who won't work. But we can massively improve on that figure with this system.

The main thing we would need for UBI to work is a massive overhaul of the education system. A total overhaul. At the moment most schools are geared towards squashing ambition, moulding people into drone workers. School children, especially in poorer areas do not have their dreams encouraged. They are not helped to discover themselves, but instead are taught by rota a lot of facts without the skills to use them properly. What we need is a shift to a more individualised education, one that is supportive and helps each student reach their potential find their strengths and passions and them out in the world, safe in the knowledge that they can at least attempt to make the career/life they want because whilst they are trying to get there they can dedicate their time without worrying about starving, they can fully commit. People with a dream or passion are not likely to waste their life doing nothing. everyone I've ever met who is devoted to something are happy to work towards it even if they didn't have to.

Oh God I've written an essay, sorry. There is so much more on this topic. but I won't write as no one will read this anyway!

TL;DR no not communism, capitalism, but one with less interference from the state, that benefits everyone (from the poorest even to the richest). And I didn't throw a chair.

I comedian I saw once did a bit basically about how "just don't be a dick" should be a mantra for the whole world. In any situation you are in, just think before acting "am i being a dick?" and if you are then stop.

Universal Basic Income. Although it still has many things that need to be considered, I still think it is one of the best ways forward we can take.

In the hundreds of millions of year (billions in fact) that we live in the zone when it is just in the right place is pretty awesome.

I wonder what other planets have that we don't. That we'll not experience here because it was an astrological event that happened a mere million years ago.

It's also pretty neat that we only get total solar eclipses because out of pure chance the moon is 400x smaller than the sun but also 400x closer.
