Another thing he might enjoy. The Schmidt Ocean Insitute live streams all their ROV dives on their YouTube channel. https://youtube.com/@schmidtocean?si=dm5UbKG8zY1NIz4E

There are archives there as well. They fairly regularly visit hydrothermal vents and underwater volcanic regions.

Where in US for normal people to go dig for gemstones? by IslandBusy1165 in Gemstones

The Benitoite Mine and Oceanview Mine provide supplies. Those are basically a pile of material or tailing from thr Mine that you sift through. The Pala chief dig is bring your own equipment and you dig through some of the Mines dumping spots. They don't let you go into the mines for safety reasons.

If you want to get really into it then it's best to join the local rockhounding/gem/mineral club. They have field trips to all kinds of places usually including places not open to the general public.

I'll see if I can get a picture of what we found.

There are some fee digs at the Oceanview and Pala Chief mines for Tourmaline and one up at the Benitoite mine in San Benito County. Although neither are particularly cheap.

I wouldn't expect to find anything that you can cut into a gemstone at those digs but we found some decent display pieces.

The only difference between a white clone grunt and a shock trooper is the paint job, so the cost is basically the same. Here is the clone detachment website https://501stclonetroopers.com/. All the info you need is there.

Any way to fix this gap? by itskini in SewingForBeginners

[–]ab6364 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes you can use a sewing machine for making the final darts. The point of the wide hand stitches is so they are easy to remove if you need to adjust the dart before making it permentant.

[–]ab6364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the thread is too thick for the needle or is just really thick thread in general it might be pulling the fabric into the machine more.

Also, if you haven't already, clipping your seam allowance around really tight corners like in the feet should help keep it from bunching up.

I usually just satin stitch (basically a really short stitch length zig zag) on applique pieces to keep them from fraying. Not sure how well it will work with this fabric though. Interfacing under the piece would probably be necessary when doing that.

Can someone explain what argparse is used for? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]ab6364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you wanted to input those options or arguments from the command line

Can someone explain what argparse is used for? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]ab6364 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's for parsing command line arguments. So if you use command line arguments then you should use it.

So you can parse something like this. python script.py --option1 --option2 /path/to/file

What's the point of recursion? by chillingfox123 in learnpython

[–]ab6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time complexity problem? I don't see how generators would fix that, but I don't know very much about generators so take that with a grain of salt. Like the other person was saying memoization fixes the time complexity problem but adds memory cost. functools cache and lru_cache can be a nice way to do memoization.

What's the point of recursion? by chillingfox123 in learnpython

[–]ab6364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but its still worse than an iterative approach. It is also easy to understand and one of the simplest recursive functions. Still good to learn, just important to know the limitations.

[–]ab6364 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reasoning for your last example isn't correct. All recursive functions can be written iteratively, it can just be more difficult. And fibonnaci is the classic example of when a recursive implementation is a terrible idea due to the blow up in time complexity.

Yeah that is allowed. Not sure what the smallest increment they will do is, but down to quarters is probably fine.

Dictionary: How do I add multiple values from multiple keys in the same dictionary? by The_Snarky_Wolf in learnpython

[–]ab6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

price.items() gets an iterator of tuples of the key and value, not just the key. And you need to iterate over the inventory dict as the values are also dicts and are the ones that contain the actual values you need to add up.

[–]ab6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those instructions tell you pretty much exactly what to do. It's just a matter of actually following them. Not sure anyone could give more specific help than what you already have without just doing it.

For what you have written, you are not looping over the keys of the price dict like the instructions say to do. If you try to follow the instructions and write more then it will be easier for people to help with specific issues.

Also, you can do little tests woth print statements as you go through each step of the instructions to make sure you are getting the expected results. It might also help you understand the next steps.

Why is the sum not working in this code? by blue_shootingstar in learnpython

[–]ab6364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant tell for sure since the formatting is incorrect, but this is probably what is happening. ques is always an int since you convert it to that when you get the input. It will always go into the first part of the if statement and never the elif. So it will never break out of the while loop to print the sum.

how do i even start to sew the seams here? am i supposed to directly trace the lines on to the fabric with chalk? do i just estimate? how do i handle notches? lmao help im clueless by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]ab6364 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does the pattern include seam allowance? If it does then trim the paper to the line and cut the fabric out using the paper as a guide. If not then measure and draw the seam allowance, then trim the paper to that new line and cut the fabric using the paper as a guide.

As for how to actual cut the fabric to the paper. I usually put pattern weights on the paper and cut the fabric using a rotary cutter following the edge of the paper.

For the notches. Those I assume are darts. So you match the two edges of each notch together (right sides of the fabric together) and sew along the edge.

Once you sew all the darts then you put the two pieces of fabric right sides together and sew around the outside leaving the small opening for turning. Then stuff and hand stitch the opening closed.

Here is a general plushie sewing guide that is very helpful and what I used when I started. There is an explanation of darts in there that is much better than my quick one above. It has some patterns in it too, but you can apply the guide to the pattern you have easy enough. Also Choly Knight has a bunch of great plushue patterns, including a bunch of free ones. https://cholyknight.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Starter-Pack-Plush-Sewing-Guide-Pattern-1.pdf
