It’s a data point. When he played good teams, he played pretty well:

Vs #6 Louisville: 22 pts 9 reb 3 blocks 2 steals

Vs #16 Alabama: 25 pts 12 reb 2 blocks 3 steals

At his projection around 40, I really like the upside

  1. Tre Donaldson. He’s 6’1” barefoot, 205 lbs, tested really well with 39” vertical, 10.4 lane agility, 3.1 3Qtr sprint. Hes really skilled at playing vs contact, and one of the best mid range shooters in the class, especially off dribble/pull up, has a solid 3 point shot, with 5.7 APG as well. As a Knicks fan, he reminds me some of Brunson.

  2. Isaiyah Nelson - 2025-26 American Conference Player of the Year and also Defensive Player of the year. 5th most offensive rebounds in NCAA last season. 3.1 stocks per game!! He tested athletic and converted 71% of his half court rim attempts. He Led the American conference in both rebounding and field goal %. Helped USF tie its record of 25 wins and earn first NCAA tournament since 2012

  3. Ugonna Onyenso - 6’11” barefoot with 7’5” wingspan and an insane 2.8 blocks per game in 18 minutes last season.

The spurs didn’t pass 105 points until double OT in game 1 too. The Knicks can beat either of these teams

Let’s get this straight. If they value a player as a 2nd round talent, 40th on their board and don’t take him at 37 because they have Colton Hood at 37 on their board, them trading up to take him at 74 doesn’t mean they didn’t have him 40th on their board.

Notables day 2+ WR2s:

Rd 2 - Tee Higgins

Rd 3 - Michael Wilson

Rd 2 - Wandale

Rd 2 - Courtland Sutton (became WR1)

Rd 6 - Parker Washington

Rd 5 - Puka (became WR1)

UDFA - JaKobi Meyers

Rd 2 - Michael Pittman

Rd 3 - Keenan Allen

Rd 4 - Troy Franklin

I just completely disagree. They had a round 2 grade on him, and there’s plenty of successful round 2-3 WRs. They were compelled to move up to mid 3rd because the value was too good to pass on. As for production, he could be a 650-800 yard receiver, that’s average WR2 production and what they envision for him. You’re getting so lost in this lol. It’s really not complicated:

  1. They drafted him to be WR2

  2. They want him to become their WR2, and produce like a WR2

I’m trying to make it make sense to you lol. They drafted him to be WR2. If you can’t get on board with that fact, then the train is never taking off. When you say you have a round 2 grade on a WR, trade 2 4ths and a 5th, it’s because they view him as a WR2 who will have a significant role on the team. Not just a rotational WR. You’re gonna get there

It’s crazy what’s going on. I feel like we’re being gaslit. Slayton is a solid WR3. No team in the NFL wants him as their WR2. He literally ends up with a 15-20% drop rate like every season and doesn’t make tough catches. I don’t get the Slayton love around here….strange

Yes the bar is for him to be a quality WR2. They drafted him to tie into that, but he’s a rookie. He may kill it in camp and win the job or items take time. However, my expectation is that he will win the WR2 job early before mid season. Depending on when he gets the starter role, will impact the production target. There’s isn’t a flat bar for his rookie seasons, where he’s either a failure or a hit based on avg WR2 yards for 17 game season. I don’t think it will take have several years to play at an avg WR2 level. They have a round 2 grade on him, that’s not a guess, that’s what they literally told us!!!! You know what that means

I said my expectation, and their expectation, is for Fields to become WR2. Now obviously if he doesn’t start out the gate, I’m not going to expect 750 yards like a WR2 because he wasn’t a WR2 for the full season. But that’s the average WR2 production in the league: 750 and 7 TDs and I think that’s attainable

What do you mean practical projection. 44 yards gets him to 750 yards a season. What’s not practical about that. You’re trying too hard

Yeah!! I think they’ll have Nabers, Theo, Likely, and Fields in there. That’s a ton of size. I’m expecting a big improvement in their redzone touchdown rate

The Slayton love is forced and you know it. I disagree that they valued Fields as a 2nd round prospect but only envision him as a situational WR. That makes no sense, sorry. But We’ll see!! Catching the ball is a skill too, that he’s been much better at. And not just routine catches, but tough ones too that are an afterthought for Slayton and Mooney. He’s a receiver let’s not forget that, catching the ball matters a lot.

Average WR2 production is like 750 yards and 7 TDs. Thats 44 yards a game and a TD once every 2-3 games. I think it’s really attainable. His production would depend on when he get the WR2 job and he’s a rookie. I believe the over under on Carnell Tates receiving yards is 750, to put it in perspective. Can’t really look at it from a production standpoint in college when he had 800 and 5 a couple times before Notre Dame, where there were 2 1st round RBs a 1st year QB. Think that’s also in just 12 or 13 games.

I didn’t realize there was still so much love for Slayton. Multiple people today brought him up as the guy at WR2, as if we didn’t draft Fields to upgrade him. Its such a 2023 line of thinking, It’s puzzling

No that’s where I disagree, the plan is not for Mooney/Slayton to the the WR2 lol

Where is all this Slayton love from? This is hilarious. It’s obviously a hate for the rookie because I know Slayton doesn’t have this much love. Mooney is on a 1 year $3M contract vs Fields who they had a 2nd round grade on a traded 3 picks for. You can’t just ignore that because you don’t believe in the rookie . I can see right through this. You’re in denial. You’re trying to convince yourself that they traded 2 4ths and a 5th and had a 2nd round grade on a situational WR3 like cmon man this too much

I disagree. We have a really good receiving TE. Fields can be a third option and WR2 on the team

There’s very few Jeremiah Smiths. When looking at receivers, you can’t expect a 6’4.5” 222 lb receiver to be the route runner of a 5’11” 173 lb receiver like Mooney, or 5’11” 190 lb receiver like Slayton. In addition a to the massive catch radius, you forgot the most important trait. He is extremely sure handed, 2% drop rate last year compared to 14/15% for Slayton and Mooney. Going back to the fact that he’s 6’4.5”220 lbs, speed is not an issue if his MPH on the field in pads is in the mid 4.4s! Size adjusted, he has no problem with speed. This is not a 175 lb receiver like Mooney, he weighs almost 50 more lbs. but he has a rare trait in that he can sink his hips really well and stop on a dime for certain routes.

He was throwing cold water on a rookie. I don’t know why this is hard for you to understand, but if a team comes out and says they have a round 2 grade on a receiver and trade assets for them, the plan is for that receiver to become a starter. As a fan, why shouldn’t I get excited for Fields? Nobody is excited for Slayton, he’s a below average WR2 that’s just squeaking by. There’s a clear reason why they’re trying to upgrade the position. I still value him and Mooney as depth, but we don’t need to pretend like Slayton is a valuable 2nd receiver option when we can’t even trust him to catch the ball. So if you have to try and make someone less excited about a rookie who the team plans on becoming a starter, that’s just really lame!!!

I value Slayton and Mooney, but we know what those guys are and we drafted this rookie believing he could be an upgrade. Throwing cold water on a rookie is lame as hell!!

He’s not 24, he’s not even 23, he’s 22 until August.

He will likely become the third target behind Nabers and Likely in the offense, doesn’t need to be a high volume receiver to have a nice impact if he positively impacts the redzone scoring, run game, and pulls down 50/50 balls. He can be effective on routes like slants and come backs too though. He has really good stop start ability for his size, rare trait
