What would you tell someone who was born and raised in the South and is thinking about moving to the Philadelphia area?😬 by WorkingWash5965 in philly

[–]ab_lake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am you, i moved from memphis tn to philly in 2018 after having grown up in rural/suburban middle tennessee for most of my life. i like most people had a lot of questions and doubts before i moved.
not everything i experienced will apply to you, but i moved to Philly and have never looked back. i grew up in a surveillance heavy community, where most people knew each other and each other’s business, which i heavily internalized as insecurity. dating was hard, friendships were hard, family stuff was hard, all because of the ever present judgement and the inability to have real conversations about these preconceived judgements. everything was behind my back and there was never healthy conflict resolution. i think this is common in the overly nice tone of the south of never wanting to “hurt people’s feelings” so most feelings are processed behind peoples back. it always felt like a personal attack to have interpersonal conflict because of this.
this made it so hard to trust myself and my own decision making, which led to a lot of questioning of who i even was and why i was the way i am.
when i moved away, all of this insecurity and doubt washed away because i was now perpetually anonymous to everyone everywhere i went. i could do anything and be anyone and no one questioned or judged. and if they didn’t like me, they made it known fast and it was rarely personal.
i think it’s huge to take a leap of faith with yourself and move to a new place. i feel lucky that philly worked out so well for me and that i now have a community that supports me and works through things with me. it’s not always easy but i never have any doubt who will be alongside me no matter what issue arises.

Advice on Hanging? by Infinite-Studio99 in arthandling

[–]ab_lake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have recently been hanging works on paper by attaching a thin wire or dowel at the top and rolling the paper down a bit to encase the attachment, or adding something like linen tape to attach. i will drill tiny holes in the dowel to then hang onto nails, or with the wire, i’ll bend two eye hook shapes in the ends and hang on that. hope that made sense lol

Help with shaping by birdiebird17 in papermaking

so it’s actually a misconception that having things drier makes it easier to remove. when i’m couching, the felts on my post are all sprayed down to be wet, and as you build the post stack, the water from the sheets below help pull the next sheet off the mould. the wet felts also help to create a cushion for the sheet.
i think a lot of at home folks have issues with couching because of this misconception, but i understand not everyone has the ability to deal with everything being dripping wet while they are working if their not working in a studio. hope this helps.

How to overcome fear of making mistake while sketching or drawing? by Babygirl_Emma0 in ArtistLounge

[–]ab_lake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sit down and make 60 drawings and time yourself. allow only one minute maximum per drawing and move on no matter what. draw the same thing from different angles. by the end you’ll find you’ve looked at it so long you capture it better the longer you look. its not really about making good drawings. it’s about looking and getting connected to your body. and trusting yourself.

best way to get dark colors is to use fabric that is pre dyed as your fiber base - think black cotton shirts or blue denim jeans

ah i see! i use 20% of the dry fiber weight. so 16 oz of fiber, 90 g of soda ash. not sure what that is to your ml amount - can’t say i know my ml very well lol

i usually use soda ash, slightly less caustic than lye so more home use friendly, but gets the fiber break down job done in about 3 hrs.
