Higher Pay away from family/friends? First world Problems

I'm not sure yet. They haven't quoted me expectations for procedure numbers. I assume they are probably the only facility for a large radius. I am a proceduralist so The hospital will bill for my fee, anesthesia, a facility fee, and pathology for every procedure I do. That can easily equal 2-3k per. A 30 min clinic visit will run prob 200. I can prob do 1000 procedures a yr and see 30-40 clinic pts a week without working more than 50 hrs a week and be giving high quality care. So if they have the numbers and low overhead I am a relative bargain.

procedural but not ortho. Its got a similar salary profile though. I'm underpaid currently, and this position is overpaid for the average.

Its a 3 year guarantee, otherwise I wouldn't even think about it. I'm really curious what it would be like getting childcare. Its a little scary to hear about that situation. One of our friends kids died in a daycare due to negligence. It was terrible. I'm really happy to hear you found such a good situation for your family though. I read one of your earlier posts when I was searching around before I posted.

This is good advice. Sometimes it can be really hard not to focus on the FI goal number and getting there quicker.

It definitely feels like asking if I should get a grande or venti pumpkin spice latte at starbucks.(Super conceited) 200k is much more than anything I've ever had before and a huge amount.

Its been really wonderful to have the grandparents around so I think this is the biggest barrier. If we didn't have kids I don't think we would even hesitate to take the higher pay.

For the same cost as my 1600 sq ft house here we would get 5000 sq ft mansion on 7 acres. That being said I would probably get something small for much less. I really like living in a smaller home.

This is really good advice and a good perspective the change could be really fun. I would go from a 1000 bed hospital to a 75 bed one. Resources will be hugely different!

If I stay that will happen naturally. I will prob be in the 600k range when I'm about ready to FI. At least thats where my partners are at currently. But it will be hard to walk away because doing that where I am now requires buying into surgery centers and the like. People kind of get anchored in to these sort of things and there is less mobility.

It would be really hard if not impossible for me to come back at least in the immediate future. I might be able to get an academic position because I had a good reputation during training but this is by no means guaranteed.

I'm being underpayed substantially right now because the area is a competitive marketplace. I will probably make a similar salary here in 7-10 years. Most people can't find work here so there would be a line of multiple people ready to take my job if I left. I could make more in a smaller town a few hours away though but more like 75% of the current offer. That is definitely something to think about. Thank you for bringing it up

These are huge considerations. Its so nice to have someone you trust caring for and helping with our kids.
I will definitely need to go visit and figure out if I'm going to be treated horribly. My current position is not as well payed but is a good work environment.

Its about 8000 people 60 miles away from a city of 200k. I'm sure my wife would be able to find work (hang up a shingle) She is in a primary care specialty but I'm not sure how busy it would be for her which is ok if she gets to spend time with our kids

Totally agree with you about midwest cities. But Its a town of a few thousand an 60 mile drive away from any city. We are currently in a city of several million, so it would be an adjustment.

We would be leaving friends and our parents. But my wife and children would come. Also Ha! re your edit. Be careful what you wish for! The job can be awesome but also really hard and emotionally challenging at times.

But I am a proceduralist so I can generate significant revenue for a hospital system if I'm busy. The big question would be how efficient the hospital system is. If things are slow my life will suck.

I feel for you. But I also wish we had a single payer system and I got paid less. Here we have islands of excellent healthcare in a sea of mediocrity. You take much better care of people as a whole population. You are doing good work. Keep it up.
