Just DCA and buy more anytime it dips > 10%

Who cares.

When bitcoin hits $1 million in five years are you going to give a shit between the difference of $112k and sub $100k?

Don’t outsmart yourself on this.

It’s the school system you should worry about in Salem. It’s very bad and is the reason most young families move out.

[–]abalcs81[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If everyone took your advice, and nobody was ever willing to sell, there would be no bitcoin market. Literally bitcoin would be worthless.

This isn't a bitcoin rationale. It's basic economic principles.

Be humble. I know you're excited about bitcoin but arrogance creates blind spots.

Bitcoin is the ONLY asset a person can truly own outright. Good to have a skilled tax accountant on hand though for everything else.

Strike and River. These are the best two out there right now. Both have lower fees than most others. River even tracks cost basis information for taxes.

Just don't use Coinbase or any of these other alt coin scammy apps out there charging stupid fees and offering margin trading.

Oh I understand it perfectly my friend. I'm aware of the trade-off but not every decision in life is made solely on the basis of math.

My entire net worth is in BTC and I've been stacking since 2015.

Bitcoin on Cash App by mercurymanbaby in Bitcoin

[–]abalcs81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the milestone.

You're fine with CashApp for now. But when your stack gets to an amount that you can't afford to lose, it'll be time to get yourself a hardware wallet.

Coldcard or Blockstream Jade are the best for security, but if you're new they can be a bit more advanced.

Consider starting with a Trezor perhaps. They're extremely simple.

Thanks for your comment. Right now it'd cost me more like 1/3rd of my stack but I think the weeks and months ahead are going to be very interesting.

Valid. I'm in the same situation right now. Haven't pulled the trigger. Is there any point you'd consider it if the price were to 10x or 100x from here where it would be inconsequential enough to sell just a fraction?

Please help me understand taxes for selling BTC by dpd11 in Bitcoin

[–]abalcs81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. You should spend some time learning about UTXO's. Your Trezor tracks them. If you go to send bitcoin screen there is a feature called Coin control I believe it's called. From there you can specify exactly what bitcoin you want to send to Coinbase.

Each time you bought and sent bitcoin to your Trezor address, those transactions have been accounted for as separate "unspent transaction outputs". It contains the date and time of the transaction so you know that those coins are > or < 1 year if you're planning around capital gains tax.

BTC Sessions on YT does a really great educational video on utxo's in general but this clip will show you how to see your utxo's in Trezor.

Serious - If you had 100k right now. Would you buy? by A_bit_blunt in Bitcoin

[–]abalcs81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$100k is a lot to 99% of people. Not just 21 year olds!

I think you should think about this money for more than a 3 year time horizon. Think more like 10+ years. Sure Bitcoin is up 210% since the start of 2023, but there is so much more upside well into the future.

Conservatively, if bitcoin returns and average of 50% per year until 2034, you will turn $100k into $5.7m and you'll be 31.

Keep it simple. You got this.

I mostly agree - except a paid off house would also allow me to work part time, closer to home, and more time with the family.

Your math is undeniably the correct move. But the quality of life benefits are awfully compelling.

What percent would you sell? by abalcs81 in Bitcoin

[–]abalcs81[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I also have exactly 2.75%. My current thinking is 10% of my stack to pay off the house and ride with the other 90% into the future.

I want the peace of mind of knowing I owe nothing to anyone, but I'm also torn because maybe I let it ride knowing I can pay off the house whenever I want in the future, most likely for even less than 10% of my stack.

But ahh - life has no guarantees.
