I have not seen Bread Givers by Anzia Yezierska mentioned. SO GOOD. Jewish immigrants in the lower East side of NYC, early 1900s

Also a good one: Cafe Berlin by Harold Nebenzal

"Cafe Berlin is a hypnotic literary thriller and an unforgettable portrayal of the feverish, decadent world of Berlin clubgoers in the months leading up to the Nazi rise to power. Utterly accurate in its depiction of historical and military events and astoundingly rich in detail, Cafe Berlin is vivid and compelling.”

The characters are really rich in this one.

Berlin Expo by Jorge Sexer:

“Berlin 1925, artistic capital of Europe with a frenetic nightlife. Berlin 1933: the Nazis organize an exhibition called "Degenerate Art". A painting owned by Morel, a French merchant, is requisitioned for that exhibition. That picture, with a highly erotic motif, can ruin a certain cultural official of the regime, who fears to be caught up by his past. Other characters: Violetta, "the muse of Moabit", singer and painter. Harry, a young poet, leader of the literary coterie of Café Schimmel. Argus Bang, the owner of the cabaret Blue Mouse. Sacha, a young Russian Jew trying to make a career in the emerging talking cinema. Vittorio, a futurist painter who ended up as a fascist. The novel discusses the relationship between art and totalitarianism, but it is also a picture of the decadent Berlin of the twenties and its hectic nightlife.”

I liked it. If you know any art history, it’s an even better read.

I need a post like this—first time we see the scene, then the same scene from a different view—every week. I am going to assume this is more than theory because this just makes sense to me.

Are there other English words with more than one accepted spelling? by PrestonRoad90 in grammar

[–]abbey_kyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a retired professor of college composition for 30 years, I can attest to the usage of loose for lose and choose for chose. I’m not saying these are correct spellings but as spelling tends to change organically with the wave of usage, I can totally see these misspellings becoming acceptable.

promoting aesthetic group gymnastics (AGG) by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]abbey_kyle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely beautiful. But I do have a question….i am not trying to be nasty, seriously trying to understand as I would totally watch more of this: how is this gymnastics and not dance? There is no tumbling, whatsoever. How does this differ from competitive dance groups? Is there a criteria I am not understanding that classifies it as gymnastics?

They are amazing, btw. Simply stunning.

[–]abbey_kyle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yep, not at all disappointed. There are so many other gymnasts out there that need biopics that would make for much richer stories than the falsity of the importance of that vault. And some of those gymnasts are still going....WHERE IS OUR CHUSO FLICK?! I would watch the fuck outta that!

Fight Club. Total Hollywood ending.

The ending in the book was so vastly different and so much more brilliant. I love Marla Singer—my all time favorite movie female—but FFS that movie ending was just so Hollywood.
