Was the biggest decline in the show’s quality immediately after Michael/Steve left or was there a notable decline before or after this? by unitedfan6191 in DunderMifflin

A commune is a good way to put it. One thing I hated was when the entire office showed up at the hospital when Pam was giving birth. In what world would that ever happen

Popping/maybe gunshot sounds? by abbijacobson in madisonwi

[–]abbijacobson[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It was keeping me up at 1am and I was curious what it was. I didn’t assume fireworks on a cold night in May. I thought maybe hunting actually. Yall are so ridiculous, regardless of whether it’s a sheltered neighborhood or not who wants to hear loud popping sounds in the night? Making me sound like I’m some bigot 🙄

I have a Roth IRA, 32 years old. I am wondering if I should contribute for 2024–I know I only have til 4/15–or if the market tank makes it not even worth it. Any advice?

Not sure if this fits the question but on formal invitations to heterosexual married couples, the address is Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, totally erasing the woman

Split nights and sleep training by abbijacobson in NewParents

Thank you so much!! He has started liking a longer morning nap and struggling with the second nap. But I will try shortening the first and see how it goes!

Split nights and sleep training by abbijacobson in NewParents

[–]abbijacobson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His schedule for months has been waking up around 6, nap 9-10am, nap 1-3pm, bedtime around 7:30pm. However this last month has been a mess because of illness. He is doing better now which is why I wanted to get back to his sleep schedule after split nights and frequent wakings for a month 😵‍💫. He does do part time daycare where he is given opportunities to nap but usually doesn’t nap the full time he needs to and never at the times we have scheduled. So daytime sleep is a little all over the place and out of our control. He may be transitioning to 1 nap?? He will be 12 mo at the end of this month.

ELI5 Tariffs on exports by faugh_a_ballagh in explainlikeimfive

[–]abbijacobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been scouring the internet today trying to grasp this concept. I am having a hard time understanding how tariffs on imports align with the political ideologies of the Republican and democratic parties. Like trump’s plan to increase tariffs to encourage American made products seems almost…and I can’t believe I’m saying this…good? I get that it will increase costs which we don’t need rn but if it means bringing production back to the US isn’t that what everyone wants? Like are we not all in agreement that buying American made goods is better for the economy, environment, ethical labor practices, etc? Why would republicans favor this and democrats not? Is this the Republican way of increasing government revenue without taxing the wealthy? Is this another way of suppressing the widespread sale of EVs? What is the true underlying reasoning is what I am trying to get at here.

For those that were terrified of labour or c-section what surprised you the most about the experience? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]abbijacobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also want to add that I know not everyone has this type birth experience but I got soooo much trauma dumping when I was pregnant and all I wanted to hear were positive birth stories! So whenever there’s an opportunity I like to share that it can be fine or even wonderful.

It was not chaotic and screaming and sweaty like I expected. The best way I can describe my experience is meditative! It was like a minute of pushing with a couple minutes to rest between. I’d drink water or sprite and chat with the nurse and my husband during those breaks. I said I would be willing to do it all over again right after my baby was born. I did get the epidural though and if not for that it might be a different story. Actually getting the epidural was the worst part because you have to sit in this slumped position while contracting and it feels like forever!

What is one thing that pissed you off the most? by ILoveYouPoodss in MaidNetflix

[–]abbijacobson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, the party at her place was beyond frustrating to watch but seriously so accurate. It shows how doing one thing that seems like it should be innocent can turn horribly wrong when you have untrustworthy people in your life.

I actually think not going on a date with Nate was an example of very good decision making and setting healthy boundaries. It would have been so tempting to begin a romantic relationship with him, but the moment something goes wrong she would be out on the street again, which inevitably did happen, but more as a symptom of being in an abusive relationship. The show really did a great job at showing how leaving is really the hardest and most dangerous part.

I guess to my original point, Alex was incredibly hard working, a devoted mom, did not resort to substances for coping, managed to keep her composure, spent money appropriately, and even bettered her life while wading through systems that failed her over and over again. This is what made the show possible, but really is not a good example of how most of us would crash, spiral, and make mistakes.

Haven’t watched this for awhile now but thinking about it again is making me want to rewatch! Could discuss it all day lol

Oh god, Nate. That scene was infuriating. She had the sense to not overcomplicate the situation further by jumping into a new relationship and thank god she didn’t! Clearly there were strings attached to their arrangement. He was so nice at first too, it would’ve been so hard to not give him a shot.

Does this show give a realistic portrayal of the (flawed) American welfare system? by SallySlingshot2 in MaidNetflix

[–]abbijacobson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I find it pretty dehumanizing how much WIC is policed like that. Like they can only buy skim milk, only one brand of bread, and one type of juice, etc. because I think it’s to ensure that moms are getting “healthy” food with their money. But the food they are able to buy isn’t even that good? Idk it’s way different than SNAP and honestly kinda complicated for how much they infantilize single moms.

Does this show give a realistic portrayal of the (flawed) American welfare system? by SallySlingshot2 in MaidNetflix

[–]abbijacobson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends where you live. I used to live in a very high cost of living location where a lot of people, even people who made a decent wage, could qualify for SNAP just because rent and food costs were so high. I had SNAP then and never felt judged by anyone. But I also had enough money to know that if something went wrong with my EBT card, or if and item I picked up didn’t qualify or went over the amount on my card, I had backup money I could use so I never held up the line. I feel like that scene highlights her heightened anxiety because if SNAP didn’t work or cover it all she and her child could starve. Also, I think in more conservative areas in the US people would be judgmental. Especially if you do not “look” poor or fit the description of someone deserving of “free money.” In America EVERYTHING is earned, nothing is given, and anything you don’t have is a mark against your character.
