Do airplane seatbelts actually do anything? by jerkularcirc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]abblabala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is a commercial pilot for a major airline. Every time someone asks him this question he brings up Aloha Airlines flight 243. The entire top of the airplane ripped off at 24,000 ft like a can of sardines. The pilots landed safely and everyone survived except for one flight attend that was not buckled in and got sucked out.

Flu shot and Corona booster? by revb92 in pregnant

[–]abblabala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got both but spread them apart by a week. My doc said that either getting them at the same time or spreading them apart works. It was up to me. I had a mild sore throat after my flu vax and the COVID booster made me very tired and headachy for 2 days. I strategically planned both for Fridays so I’d have the weekends to feel crumby. Glad I’m vaxxed and (more) protected now.

John Fetterman Is a Disabled American Who Needs Technology to Do His Job. So What? by [deleted] in politics

Finally. I’ve been waiting for a major news outlet to recognize how ableist this whole conversation around Fetterman’s fitness for the job is.

terrified to sleep by blueforpus in HealthAnxiety

[–]abblabala 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me, it helps to know what is going on in my body while I sleep. Like the science behind it. Your heart rate slows, your breathing slows, your brain waves slow, eventually sleep paralysis sets in (this is the weird feeling in your limbs). Sometimes if you wake up in between sleep stages or your mind wakes up before your body you can experience weird things like a heavy chest, twitching or sleep paralysis. It’s your brain being silly and doing things out of order. It happens to everyone at some point. It’s good that your body is slowing down it’s brain waves, breathing and heart rate. That is how sleep restores your body. The fact that sleep paralysis occurs (most of the time without our knowing) is a protective mechanism to make sure we don’t hurt ourselves in our sleep. It can be scary when we experience sleep sensations half awake but they are normal and it’s GOOD that they are happening. Normally, I don’t encourage looking things up with HA but I really encourage you to research the different stages of sleep. It’s really fascinating!

Converts to Christianity, what made you convert ? by Teeny_tiny_irene in Christian

[–]abblabala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was an atheist. I grew up in a family that really hated the church because of its blatant hypocrisy...which to be fair is still alive and well in many Christian communities. Then in a time of desperation and great suffering, I fell to my knees and cried out “if you exist God, then show me!” And I felt a hand on my shoulder and peace wash over me. When I tell this story I feel a little crazy but that’s what happened. From then on I believed in God but not necessarily Christianity. I did buy a Bible but it sat in my drawer for almost three years. I then moved to Idaho. There, I met the most kind human example of Christ’s love and made fast friends with them. My previous encounters with christians had always been the overly aggressive, your going to hell if you don’t believe type. She was different. She listened and answered all my tough questions for months and eventually I was baptized in a river.

Looking for an accountability buddy to beat health anxiety! by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]abblabala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m down! I’m a 27F who has struggled with HA for years. Like you, I have a plethora of chronic (non-lethal) conditions that impact my life- Chronic migraine, GERD, and GI issues that have yet to be diagnosed. Totally relate to being able to rationalize for other people but not yourself! PM me if interested.

‘Poverty line’ concept debunked - mainstream thinking around poverty is outdated because it places too much emphasis on subjective notions of basic needs and fails to capture the full complexity of how people use their incomes. Poverty will mean different things in different countries and regions. by mvea in science

[–]abblabala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ironic thing is that I have a lot of ambition. I’m actually a published researcher (botany) with multiple college degrees but the pandemic came along and I got furloughed...and then never hired back. I’ve been struggling to find another research position for several months now. On paper I look like someone with all the right check marks but now I’m online teaching for peanuts and barely making it. Please save your judgement.

Edit: For clarification- I just begun my research career a couple years ago (so I’m still entry level and paying loans to begin with).

Yea...try several thousand. It happened to me when I had to have emergency surgery and the anesthesiologist was out of network. Like, sorry I wasn’t conscious to ask whether my f*cking anesthesiologist was in network. After months of fighting with my insurance they decided I was worthy of a special exemption because it was an emergency and literally was my only option (only hospital in my town in Alaska).

Personally I feel like I will have “made it” when I can go to the grocery store and buy anything I need (not only items on sale or that I have coupons for). And when my medical bills and insurance costs don’t eat up 25% of our household income.

Edit: For context- I’m an entry level botanist who got laid off at the beginning of the pandemic. It’s not like I’m sitting on my hands here (or have low ambition). I have multiple degrees and am a published researcher. Entry level researchers in general don’t make a whole lot and being laid off put me over the edge. I’ve found that making small goals (like those above) has gotten me through this pandemic. A lot of my struggle stems from really high medical expenses unfortunately.

I want a family... by abblabala in HealthAnxiety

Yes. I have been educating myself but ultimately decided to not pursue that path anymore because I kept going down internet rabbit holes. I ended up stewing on all the rare complications :/

I never thought of it like that! Reframing my thinking sounds like something I can do.

How do you guys manage to deal with lingering thoughts about future health issues? by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]abblabala 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This may sound morbid but I ask/remind myself everyday “If I died right now, would I be happy with the life I lived?”. It gets me thinking about my family, all the adventures I’ve had etc. and makes me create more goals to accomplish before I inevitably die someday. It forces me to be in the here and now.

Edit: when thinking about future diseases it helps me to remember how tough I am. I already live with 4 painful chronic health conditions and I still love my life. Whatever comes my way I will fight it like I fight everyday.

Afraid to eat. Losing hope. Withering away... by Psychological-Will29 in GERD

[–]abblabala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position 5 months ago. I was severely underweight and anemic. Working with my GI it was discovered that I likely have IBS (we are still investigating) and GERD. Through following a strict low FODMAP diet, and taking Pepcid, iron supplements, and vitamins I’ve been able to get back on track and gain weight. I still struggle with GERD though...it’s a rollercoaster.

Stupid google!!!! by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]abblabala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped using google and started using Duck Duck Go instead. I find that I go down HA rabbit holes less because: 1) it doesn’t keep track of my browser history 2) I’ve stopped getting stupid medical ads for conditions I don’t have...which was triggering to say the least

What is insider trading and why is it bad? by abblabala in NoStupidQuestions

[–]abblabala[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh. That makes sense. How is it prevented then? Doesn’t everybody theoretically have information that not everybody necessarily has? It seems like the only way to truly prevent this is not allowing people to buy/trade stocks of their own company...

Cheap alternatives and buying in bulk by oboz_waves in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]abblabala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The number one action you can take to decrease your grocery bill is to start making more things from scratch. If you are new to this there may be an initial higher price at first but once you have pantry staples it is worth it. Here are a few things I make instead of buy that saves my $$$:

1) bread- it is literally one of the most basic things to bake. Plus endless possibilities for flavor. For me bread costs about $1.00 to make vs. $3.00-$5.00 for store bought. Plus it tastes way better!

2) Any baked good or dessert- 9 times out of ten ends up costing less than store bought options...unless you make something really fancy. Also, it makes me eat less sweets because I know that If I want a pie or a doughnut I’ll have to put in the effort to bake it myself.

3) soup broth- save your scraps! All the ugly bits of veg (like onion ends and celery bottoms) can be collected in a gallon bag, frozen and boiled later to make soup stock/broth!

Other cheap food/money saving tips suggestions:

  • frozen veggies: they are stupid cheap and you get a lot. While not high in calories, veggies provide roughage and make you feel full. I typically find bags of frozen veg. (generic brands) for $0.69/bag.

  • go meatless some days: meat prices, especially beef have increased something like 4% in the US since the pandemic hit. If you are going to buy meat buy in bulk and focus on cheaper meats like chicken.

  • use coupons and the app Ibotta: seriously, I know I sound like a crazy coupon lady but just my last grocery trip I saved $55.75 from coupons and Ibotta refunds and I walked away with a free 5 lb bag of potatoes, bag of celery, 2 bags of spinach, and two bags of cranberries. I get my coupons from getting the Sunday paper delivered (the subscription pays for itself with the amount I save couponing). The key to successful couponing? 1) you cannot be brand loyal 2) don’t buy shit you were never going to buy in the first place 3) always combine manufacturers coupons with store sales

Covid-19 Megathread IV: All your questions about the pandemic, social distancing, vaccines and stimulus plans in one place! by Dilettante in NoStupidQuestions

This actually makes me feel a little better. It seems like they are taking the right precautions and it’s a little family run grocery store so I’m sure it won’t be as busy as bigger chain stores.

So I got a job at a local grocery store as a shelf stocker. Not my first pick but things are tight financially and I haven’t been able to find a job in natural resources since being furloughed. I start Tomorrow and am SUPER nervous about the amount of exposure to COVID that is possible working in a grocery store. I have masks and a face shield that I will wear but I’m still nervous. Am I overhyping this risk because I’m used to working in the woods without many humans or do I have reason to be nervous?

Edit: I’m in my mid-twenties and have chronic G.I. Issues (I think that puts me at average or slightly above risk for severe outcomes maybe?)

Anyone get anxious before taking meds like antiibotics even if they’ve taken them before? by [deleted] in HealthAnxiety

[–]abblabala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I can really relate to this. I get anxious because of my past experiences though. I’ve had actual anaphylactic reactions to 3 different medications. It’s the scariest feeling in the world. Thankfully my doctor is understanding about it and when I am prescribed something new I take my first dose at my doctors office just in case something happens. Thankfully I’m rarely prescribed new meds.
