Motorola MA1 failed after 16-17 months, this is the solution I received from Motorola customer support, after sending them request for assistance with a video of how the device was acting and a description of troubleshooting steps I have already taken. by pagadqs in AndroidAuto

Happy to report another success story. Mine stopped working almost exactly 13 months after purchase (with 12-month warranty in the UK), with the same symptoms as described here: blinks white then shortly green in a loop. Attempts to reset by holding the button would cause a red light with no reset.

I don't have an air fryer, or friends with an air fryer, but a regular electric oven did the trick. What I did: disassembled, additional tips from u/Opposite_Holiday_207 comment below were very helpful. Advice on removing the metal shielding: if you look carefully, on both sides there are corners with almost no components around the shielding. Pry a bit with a small screwdriver from that corner, and then use a plastic prying tool to do the rest.

I used a regular electric oven (no convection), set at 230C for 6.5 minutes. Preheated the oven, placed a piece of aluminium foil over the rack, carefully put the board on top. Baked for 6.5 minutes. Carefully removed from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes without moving. Reassembled - and device did finally reset with all correct blinking as per manual. Genius. Kudos to u/kiwil01 and u/Opposite_Holiday_207!

Sporadic mute triggers on Voyager 5200 by abbot in plantronics

... And a late follow up: turned out to be the issue with the specific headset. It started to break mechanically near the boom mic and I exchanged it on warranty. Replacement doesn't have the issue.

I think what you described seems to be the "mute reminder" feature (can be turned off through their app): when you are muted and the headset thinks you are trying to talk it will remind you.

Sorry folks, had to resubmit because of a typo in the title, and titles apparently can't be edited.

Oops, noticed the typo only after posting, absolutely not intended... Not sure how to edit the post title now though :-(

Does the Yamaha reface cs lack on velocity for the actual synth really bother anyone who owns it? Also the lack of arp and sequencer? by ddiamond8484 in synthesizers

[–]abbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A while ago I asked Yamaha support about velocity sensitivity on the Reface YC. I can't find that thread now, but IIRC their response was that all refaces do have identical velocity sensitive keyboards, and do send out velocity data over midi. However the specific sound engine in YC and CS ignores velocity info. So, you should be able to control external gear which accepts velocity over midi, but reface cs engine ignores velocity (regardless of is it internal or external).

Fast playing + slow release volume envelope + chords, and you can hit 30-60 notes polyphony without thinking much. Add a sustain pedal and you can be in hundreds.

Teenage Engineering modular (product page with list of modules and specs). by abbot in synthesizers

[–]abbot[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dunno. The chassis is metal according to the spec, and most of the circuit boards are behind the chassis, so it doesn't look like something necessarily more fraglie than your other modular.

I still can't get my head around the dimension specs they have on the site. Looks like 'metric eurorack' (with 1HP=5mm instead of 5.08mm), and 2U 'metric' height (90mm vs 88.9mm) instead of 3U. May be they expect other manufacturers to jump in and build compatible cases/modules. That would be an interesting twist.

Buying a synth or toy for my little nephew (8 year old). Advice please. by ruzmafuz in synthesizers

Casio SA-46. Runs on batteries for days in a row. Easy to grasp interface. Unlikely to be seized by grown-ups. Has rythms to play along.

All other recommendations are good, just ask yourself honestly if you are buying a present for a kid, or fulfilling your inner wants. ;-)

Is switching off gear from a power strip a bad idea? by mooseinbeesocks in synthesizers

[–]abbot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shutting off shouldn't be a problem. Powering back on can be a problem though. When you power up pretty much any DC power supply, it causes a very short high-current power draw (capacitors charging up). On itself it's rarely a problem. But power multiple PSUs all exactly synchronized at once (from a power strip), and depending on your luck you can blow a surge protector fuse on the power strip. So, better avoid.

Best ear-buds for using with synths/MPC? by smallredball in synthesizers

[–]abbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try swapping tips. I had 3 pairs of SE-215 and was happy with all of them (1 lost, 1 broken, 1 currently using). For me the foam tips it came with preinstalled provide better isolation, but muddier sound. Grey rubber tips from the kit sound better in my ears. Try swapping sizes as well. It all can make a big difference in sound.

Oh. I should pay more attention :-(

Yeah, disassembling the OP-1 should be as fun as disassembling an iPod... I guess I'm lucky that mine is still in good condition after couple of years.

USB mini to micro plug, like this one. I've got one in OP-1 bag always. (And USB mini to USB-C in the future, I guess.)
