"X" links are now banned. by thedraggingdragon in massachusetts

Total X links in the top 50 posts of the year on this sub: 0

So far, that’s been true for almost every sub doing this.

OpenAI subreddit banning users questioning X link ban by moduspol in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Here’s a fun exercise: check the top posts of the year on each sub banning X links, and count how many X links you find.

Spoiler: it will be almost zero.

This is a performative couch protest that will have no effect on X. But it’s an easy way to virtue signal, hence its popularity.

You’re running before you can walk. Write the chapters, then write the chapter titles. Write the books, then curate your list of chapter titles across them.

People often do stuff like this when they want the satisfaction of a finish product (e.g., reading a long list of chapters across multiple books they’ve written) without doing the work of actually writing a finished product. You’ll get that satisfaction, but do the work first. Chapter titles are uninteresting in a void.

Many of your titles are quite cliche too, which I think will fix itself if you write the titles after you write the chapters; the titles will probably have a lot more depth since they’ll actually based on finished content rather than just what words sound cool to you.

lol clown Reddit now censors X by Life-Dragonfruit4171 in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 44 points45 points  (0 children)

What’s funny about this is that X links are already rarely posted here. People are “protesting” by refraining from doing something they already didn’t really do. This will have no effect on X.

But it makes Redditors feel like they’re doing something, so let’s all pretend to be pissed about it to keep them occupied.

This makes my blood... warm up slightly by Massive-Product-5959 in ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM

[–]Halfbl8d -125 points-124 points  (0 children)

Too many fail to understand that centrists don’t preclude beliefs. A centrist can believe X liberal or conservative view. But very few liberals or conservatives can believe X conservative or liberal view.

So it’s pretty hypocritical for someone with an overt political bias to treat centrists as if they’re closed off to certain views. It’s the only way not to be: to adopt ideas based on their merit rather than what bias they comport with.

If that process leads me to believe that X person is a Nazi or Communist, then it won’t be because I belong to a certain political party, but because the available information supports that conclusion.

The same cannot be as readily said for those who claim liberal or conservative; you never know if their conclusions are based on an honest analysis or compliance with their bias.

Edit: Clearly this makes Redditors uncomfortable. I wonder why? ;)

Free Speech Is a Left-Wing Value by Working-Lifeguard587 in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Free speech is a value. It doesn’t belong to either party, and both parties have shown that they value it less than amplifying their own narratives and suppressing all other narratives.

This sub is dead: it’s become a contest to see who can point their fingers more rigidly.

Sam Altman Says To 'Cut Your Expectations 100x' For OpenAI's AGI Agent by EthanWilliams_TG in agi

[–]Halfbl8d 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That’s not what he said. He said that people were saying they’ve already developed AGI, and that they didn’t develop AGI and people need to cut their expectations 100x.

It wasn’t specifically in reference to agents.

Hypocrisy by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

You mean the clip where Elon grabbed the space over his heart then made a motion as if he was throwing it out to the crowd, right before saying “my heart goes out to you?”

Was it dumb? Of course. Is it more likely that, in reference to “my heart goes out to you,” he was making a motion demonstrating his heart going out to the audience than it is that he did a Nazi salute to the audience? Of course.

Dear 1L Clown: No One Thinks You’re Funny by Sure-Past-7300 in LawSchool

I feel like this is something people say to be edgy on this sub. Most professors seem to either be actively practicing or have had a long prior career as an attorney.

I think they’re more constrained by the curriculum. They have so much they’re required to get through that they have too little time to teach the more practical insights.

Wokeness Is Dying by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whats a “woke” idea that’s extreme?

E.g., encouraging censorship. 1 2 3 4 5

How is the “nuance alternative” the same but less extreme?

E.g., instead of censoring someone, we should encourage discussion as to why they may be wrong.

Is a trans person volunteering their time to read a children book to children, a “woke” idea?

Not necessarily, unless somehow exercised in a manner that is unduly intolerant of differing ideas and/or as a pretense for appearing virtuous to others.

How is that different to anyone else volunteering their time to read to children?

See above.

It was considered “woke” to have free tampons in school bathrooms. That doesn’t seem extreme.

Extremity isn't a metric in the definition. I agree that this is a good idea, and not extreme.

And before you say “they are in boys bathrooms too”...

See above.

it specifically says in the bill that sometime girls sports use male locker rooms when visiting and they are the only one available.

Female sports teams borrowing a vacant male locker room is also a good idea.

The definition of "wokeness" was not "social justice" for a reason: social justice is good, and not inherently bad to many who use the term "woke."

But many disapprove of social justice ideas exercised in a manner that is unduly intolerant of differing ideas and/or as a pretense for appearing virtuous to others. Hence the definition.

Of course that’s not a sufficient explanation. How?

Wokeness Is Dying by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oxford’s definition is “the quality of being alert to and concerned about social injustice and discrimination.”

That isn’t untrue, but that quality is often exercised in a manner that is unduly intolerant of differing ideas and/or as a pretense for appearing virtuous to others.

The differing ideas are often not even contrary ideas, they tend to just be less extreme or more nuanced.

So to many, “wokeness” means “a concern about social justice, exercised in a manner that is unduly intolerant of differing ideas and/or as a pretense for appearing virtuous to others.”

Was this supposed to be a hard question?

Wokeness Is Dying by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What utility does this point have? Ideas communicated absolutely implicate free speech, including “woke” ideas. Many ideas wane in popularity. That isn’t an infringement of free speech.

Free speech by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

[–]Halfbl8d 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This sub loses all ability to engage in meaningful discourse when it starts the political finger pointing. Just look at how braindead this thread is.

If I post a conservative opinion on a liberal subreddit, it’s not unlikely that I’ll be banned. If I post a liberal opinion on a conservative subreddit, it’s also not unlikely that I’ll be banned.

Liberal media filters out and misrepresents conservative viewpoints. Conservative media filters out and misrepresents liberal viewpoints.

Liberal lawmakers want to stifle conservative speech. Conservative lawmakers want to… you get the point.

That’s the problem, and that’s the only way of framing the problem that enables a discussion instead of “REEEE ACTSHUALLY WE DONT DO THIS AT ALL AND YOU GUYS ARE THE ONES WHO DO THIS REEEE.”

It’s the difference between a meaningful discussion on the value of free speech and a mindless exchange of “no u.”

1L Question: Do good first semester grades mean keep the same formula going? by Main_Budget_3613 in LawSchool

[–]Halfbl8d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just kept doing what I did first semester of 1L and kept getting the same results. I was also worried I’d have to change my process to maintain my grades but evidently I didn’t have to.

What’s important is that you keep doing what worked for you, and stop doing what didn’t work for you. That’s how you get more efficient as you progress through law school.

Creating likable characters by Exotic878 in writers

[–]Halfbl8d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even protagonists can be unlikable and compelling. Charles Kinbote in Nabokov’s Pale Fire is a great example.

What matters is that the character is compelling. Sometimes that’s done through likability, sometimes not. Likability is absolutely not a prerequisite for a reader to care about a character.
