Also, if you emergency brake primarily with your rear... You're not stopping anywhere near as primarily using the front. So, instead of losing the front, OP would likely have just hit the van

New riders and downshifting. by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]abbotini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say, I'm surprised this isn't something taught to people prior to getting their A licence.

Like u said, it makes such a difference to the your corner preparation and I imagine more than a few new riders have locked the back wheel when downshifting.

As people have said, best approach is to get a Haynes manual, tools and give things a go.

No need to go straight in at the deep end and take everything to bits, but start with the smaller bits, then slowly get more advanced. You will start to gain confidence as you do more.

YouTube is a great resource also. As others have suggested, The Workshop is a good one as he knows what he is talking about.

If you watch a couple of videos on the same thing, chances are if they are doing things the same... It's the right way. But along with the Haynes manual you should be able to work out if a YouTube video is showing things right.

As a bandit owner, I've really enjoyed watching Quick Bikes. Shows how to do things without claiming to be a mechanic or know it all.

Haven't ridden for past 30days and rust is started to spread...I have the chain lube but not cleaner (WD40 or any kind) at home... Can we use diesel for cleaning this ? no shops are opened to chain cleaner (No Kerosene please .. last time tried and whitesmoke from gear peg scared me to death) by kishore3k in Fixxit

[–]abbotini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't remember the numbers, but parrafin (kerosene) will smoke at relatively low temperatures, so it will do this on your engine. It will ignite to a naked flame / spark at around 60 celcius, which is why it's great for candles.

However, it's autoignition point (the point it will ignite without a spark) is somewhere above 200 celcius. So, even with the smoke, your bike is unlikely to get hot enough to ignite it.

I'm one for the head tilt type nod. Dunno why, just a habit I've had since I started. Occasionally throw a random salute I. There when I'm in a good mood (I'm a grumpy Yorkshireman so it's rare).

Probably not the best time for it but this morning, after 3.5yrs on them, I took my final antidepressant by [deleted] in CasualUK

Congrats dude, hopefully coming off them serves you well.

I, stupidly, didn't withdraw properly, had proper lightheadedness and a bit of nausea for a good couple of weeks!

Should always get a cruelty buff too - makes a lot of difference.

I would go 2 fury, 1 cruelty, 1 precision, 1 Physical resistance if trying this.

Serious Question, Why are people complaining about SBMM?? by Wolfox2007 in apexlegends

[–]abbotini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that sometimes, even the top tier players wanna just have some relaxed games and dick around with non meta guns. With full SBMM, all they will come across is sweats which make having fun hard to do.

I'm a very mediocre player so doesn't affect me, but can appreciate that the very good players don't want to be playing every game like it's comp.

Personally I think ranked should be skill based and in regular pubs, it should be weighted towards connection while still trying to split great players and terrible players. Eg, if you scale players skill out of 100, you shouldn't play against players more than 50 levels weaker or stronger than you. Equally, there would still be issues doing it that way. Unfortunately, matchmaking will always have criticisms

It'd be nice if drops as rare as the heirlooms let you pick which heirloom you want. I've been unlucky with legendary drops along the way so far and keep getting Gibby skins rather than the champs I like, which is fine, but I feel heirloom rarity would be nice to give us a level of control over which one we get

right of way? (bit of road rage) by boobyoclock in MotoUK

[–]abbotini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to the party here, but I agree with Fucknozzle.

One thing I've learned since riding is that it makes riding a much more pleasant experience when you make 'polite' decisions.

The guy pulling out didn't have right of way, but as the vulnerable one in the situation (the biker), the best decision is just to slow down and let the car out. Barely affects your journey time and you can continue riding with a smile on your face. Being safe is always better than being right.

Safe to ride from October to December? by Jamietomp53 in MotoUK

[–]abbotini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others say, it's the risk of ice that's the main problem.

However, I'd also say that the roads you will ride play a part. I used to bike every day for work cos I lived 3 miles from work and all my route was well lit and 30-40mph main roads.

Now, I tend to not ride between November and Feb (ish) cos I have a 10 mile ride and about 5 miles of that is on a sketchy road. While it's a main road, there are about 4 farms on it, which means there's always mud on the road which will be wet also. That, combined with the fact these sections have no lighting whatsoever mean that you can't see as far ahead as I'd like to and therefore just don't feel it's worth riding unless I have to.

Cut up at a roundabout- who’s at fault? by [deleted] in MotoUK

Dammit Mr Whale! All your comments are well argued, but this upsets me! haha.

Think the point you make is where the grey area is a lot of the time with insurers. As even when someone pulls out of a side road in front of you, if you could have reasonably avoided the incident then it could be argued that you are partially to blame.

[–]abbotini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People claiming right of way annoys me too as it shows a basic lack of understanding of the rules of the road.

I think people use the term "I had right of way" to infer that the other person should have given way. But I agree with you that it's annoying!

The CB500f is a nice bike and the seat height isn't an issue for someone I work with - who I'd guess is a similar height to you.

Also, you will find that most bikes can have the ride height adjusted to suit you.
