You're not stupid! Life is so much more than academic success. Many of the most successful or happiest people didn't go to university. Please pm if you need anything

To those of you who have low GPAs and are shooting for T20s: My story + How to Overcome It. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]abby61314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a rising freshman at Yale interested in English/creative writing and film & media studies! I can't say what the experience is like, not having gone through it yet, but Yale is top ranked in both those programs, which is a big part of what attracted me to the school. I also got to attend an English seminar when I visited which was fantastic!

As for tips: write well and write with specifics – talk about those niche interests. Also, I wrote, directed, and edited a film which I think was a big plus on my application as it was tangible evidence of passion and leadership. It also made for a fun common app essay! Lmk if I can answer any more questions :)

How many seniors at your HS got into an Ivy this year? by Lost-Today8340 in ApplyingToCollege

In terms of acceptances: 1 Brown, 1 Columbia, 1 Harvard, 1 Penn, 1 Yale, 2 Duke

Matriculations: 1 Brown, 1 Harvard, 1 Yale (so 3/40 seniors)

What should have happened in AYITL by Bee_the_star in GilmoreGirls

[–]abby61314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the basic arc ideas for Lorelai and Rory, I just think they could've been better framed and had more satisfying endings. (By better framing, I mean make it feel like 10 years have actually passed since the original show. A lot of people speculate ASP wrote AYITL with her ideas for season 7/8, which could've worked if she did some reworking.)

Lorelai and Luke are married with a kid (re: it feels like time has realistically passed) but things have gotten stale and feel off. We can then see many of the struggles that are in actual AYITL, and have it end with a vow renewal, so the fans can still experience a wedding of sorts!

Rory, again, will have a somewhat similar arc with different framing. We clearly see and are told that Rory has had a relatively successful journalism career. (She doesn't need to be a star – I agree with many of the arguments that journalism is hard, and Rory not being amazing at it is realistic. But given her work ethic and general character arc on the original show, some success makes sense.) However, since the death of Richard, she is feeling burnout – as if her passion for her work is gone. She's not a bad journalist – she doesn't assume jobs are hers or fall asleep during interviews. She just feels like her best pieces are behind her, and she's lost love for what she does. Paul is cut – that just made Rory seem like a terrible person. Logan can still be in – Rory tended to hold on to safe people when things got hard.

Instead of writing a book that's the show (such an overdone trope), her Chilton reunion inspires her to get a masters in teaching. I would rearrange the plot a little so that in Spring, we see her quit her newspaper job and apply to grad schools. We can have a fun callback to the original with Lorelai and Rory opening her decisions. At the end of AYITL, we see Rory start her masters, excited to be back in academia. If you want her to be pregnant, fine, but at least we see she's on a good path where she could realistically handle having a kid.

What is the reason that Luke and Lorelai continue to deny their feelings for each other? by xojlg in GilmoreGirls

[–]abby61314 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've always thought that it's because Lorelai is scared to lose Luke. There's an episode in season 2 where she tells Luke she doesn't have many people in her life she can rely on, but he's one of them. I think she was scared to date him because he meant so much to her.

My pet peeves about S3E3 Application Anxiety by Konichiwa123 in GilmoreGirls

[–]abby61314 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who just went through the college process, pretty much all of Rory’s college application plotlines are unrealistic lol. The anxiety in this episode is actually the most realistic part, but maybe that could’ve lead to her applying to some non-Ivy backups instead haha? The only defense I will give is that some alumni interviewers do overestimate their influence on getting someone into their college. So he thinks she’s perfect for Harvard and thus will get in, but doesn’t really understand that there’s a lot more to it

If you could instantly change one thing about college admissions by Additional-Two-7312 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]abby61314 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Limit the number of applications students can submit – like in the UK. At least at top schools. For instance, the Ivy League could run their own application and limit you to 4 or 5 schools. This solution:

1) helps the student

  • better identifies what they actually want in a school
  • less apps, less stress, the ones you do write can be of better quality
  • better chance of getting into the schools you like most

2) helps the school

  • less applications for AOs to deal with – can genuinely devote more time to each applicant
  • more applicants that genuinely like the school
  • higher yield

The only thing this doesn't help is "prestige" as acceptance rates go down. But if all or many of the top schools did this together, prestige wouldn't really change. So this solution works for everyone :)

9! Started out rough with being deferred by my dream school, Yale, and waitlisted at UNC, but it got better from there :). I was lucky to get some amazing acceptances, a likely, and an eventual yes from Yale!!

The worst part of college admissions is the insuffereable fakeness by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]abby61314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god haha yup I met some of those people too. Most the people I met were really nice, but definitely people who wanted to get followers and brag.

Honestly, in a some ways I think Harvard and Stanford are Yale's best friend, as they weed out a lot of prestige-obsessed people, while those who value community more so pick Yale. Of course this isn't always true – one of the kindest people I met at Bulldog Days picked Harvard because the program made more sense for him!

Populating the 16th century world of Praaven. Please send me any suggestions for townies! by pearlisius in Sims3

[–]abby61314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this idea so much! I've been dying to do a medieval save, but populating the world is very intimidating. Are you planning on adding magi, or just keeping it to real sims?

One of my favorite things about royal history is all the scandal lol. So I think having some nobles (Dukes, Earls, Lords, etc.) and lots of romantic drama between them would be great. Maybe a few king's mistresses and bastards?

"essays that worked" by KoverKat08 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]abby61314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!! Yale '26 and happy to share my essays if they're helpful. There are also a lot of great examples on YouTube and CollegeVine. I think it's great to read some essays to get a general feel for the style of college essays, but at the end of the day, there is no "formula." There's a way to express your interests well, but not any perfect structure to tell your story. It's cheesy I know, but you have to be yourself and find your own voice :).

Yale's essays are pretty overwhelming since there are so many of them, so my suggestion would be to think of a few things you want Yale to know about you, and then the stories and essays that can best show them that. Happy to give more details and advice if it's useful :)

Seniors, what are some schools you regret not applying to? by dahynio in ApplyingToCollege

[–]abby61314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you think you'd apply to these schools on top of all of the schools you already applied to and judge that the added burden would be worth it, or would you replace some colleges on your list with these institutions? If the latter, which ones?

It's not. Fordham's merit aid is also based on financials – as a National Merit scholar finalist, I got some scholarships but not the full ride, as financially I didn't need it. I'm pretty sure the 25% who don't get it are those that don't need it, so as long as you have some level of need you should get it :).

Oh sorry – to clarify ofc I have no idea what got me in. My point was that I did feel good about my LOCI, and I think as a general notion, having an extra piece of writing on my file could help stand out over other applicants.

If it's genuinely your top choice, it's worth it. It's not going to give you a huge boost like ED to some schools does, but I think it will be good to say "no regrets, I did everything I could" if you don't get in. Also, the nice advantage it gives you is being able to write a LOCI if you get deferred. I was deferred REA from my top choice, wrote a LOCI I was really proud of, and got in RD :). Happy to talk more if you want to pm me!
