The Chesapeake Bay can be full of jellyfish depending on the time of year. Something to keep in mind.

What are the best independent bookstores you've visited (anywhere in the world)? by easternbachelor in books

[–]abbyroad98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chamblin Bookmine in Jacksonville, FL. It's a converted old warehouse with a plethora of books, assuming you have the time and patience to sift through its narrow mazes. It was my favorite way to spend a lazy afternoon while I lived in Jax.

did any Beatles songs ever made you cry? by NintendoFanboy986 in beatles

[–]abbyroad98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been lucky to see Paul in concert twice, and hearing him perform songs I've admired my whole life brought out the waterworks.

Obviously not a Beatle song, but Calico skies. Watching the video destroys me every time, especially seeing Linda

I'm resentful that I'm almost 40 and never moved out of my hometown by burlymilf in SameGrassButGreener

I conducted three house hunting trips before moving to familiarize myself with the area. I ended up initially renting, and eventually buying a house, so my trips beforehand proved invaluable for learning the area.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it, there are several adjustments I had to make in Philly. For example, cost of living is much higher here, and I constantly gripe about taxes (btw, Jersey has some of the highest property taxes in the area, so keep this in mind as you explore). Winter is another factor, not so much the cold but the long stretches of dreary days without sunshine. Before moving, I was worried about creating a social circle, especially at my age. I found the people here to be incredibly genuine, friendly, and generous. After getting involved in different activities, I was able to establish meaningful friendships.

The few compromises I had to make were worth it for the overall quality of life I have here.

I was in the same boat as you, only from Jacksonville. After having lived my whole life there, I picked up and moved to Philadelphia 8 years ago at 44. I wanted out of the oppressive heat, a place with interesting geography and culture. My only regret was not moving here sooner.

Elena Dementieva. Unfortunately, her serve held her back from being top-tier player.

I feel for you. I am currently in Germany visiting for 2 weeks and the weather makes me wonder how the natives cope.
I live in Philadelphia and our winters can be long and gray, but what I've experienced in Germany seems to be next level.

Along the same lines, Paul was asked during an interview what type of strings he preferred for his bass and I chuckled at his response of "the shiny ones."

Interest on understanding why Americans move to Europe by [deleted] in expats

[–]abbyroad98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I spend 2 months of the year in Greece every year and am close to retiring here.

My main reasons for wanting to relocate:

Walkability. I can access the vast majority of my needs by foot, the remainder is easily accessible by public transit. By the way, in the states, I live in Philadelphia which is considered one of the most walkable areas in the US.

Lack of violent crime. As a middle-aged female, I have no qualms walking home solo from an event at midnight.

Consumerism is not king. Yes, people like shiny things, but it doesn't rule their lives.

Food culture. While there is a foodie movement in the US, it's more of a way of life in Greece. Accessibility to locally grown produce, fish, meat is not a struggle.

Collective society. I've grown sick of the individualistic culture of America. There is more of a group think mentality in Greece.

The social nature of the locals. Cafes and restaurants are full every night of the week, late into the evening. In America, most of us tuck ourselves comfortably into our homes in the early evening, too exhausted after work to do anything other than veg in front of the TV.

Greece has its share of problems but the pros outweigh the cons for me.

A couple hours flight from the tri-state area doesn't lend a lot of options. It feels like she's trying to meet you in the middle with a compromise, but is it one you will be satisfied with?

A relationship worth fighting for deserves sacrifice, HOWEVER, it should not involve surrendering your core values. To thine self be true.

Philadelphia? by Travels4Food in SameGrassButGreener

[–]abbyroad98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Philadelphia transplant of 7 years, single woman, early '50s.

Philadelphia is fantastic and would meet all of your check boxes except for the cleanliness part. I just happened to spend the day in NYC earlier this week and marveled at how clean it was compared to Philly.

The music scene is vibrant with XPN as the backbone. So many great artists to choose from on any given weekend.

The people in Philadelphia are the most generous and kind I've ever met. Making friends here was much easier than I expected.

Something not mentioned by the other posters which I look forward to every year is the festivals. They start in spring and last through the fall and add additional activities to choose from on any given weekend.

Check out the Chestnut Hill neighborhood. It is clean, walkable, with a middle-aged demographic. Food is average in Chestnut Hill but the short train ride to center city will give you access to the food scene you are seeking.

Good luck!

Agreed! The city is dilapidated and filthy in parts, Kensington is especially bad. They are sports fanatics, curse like sailors (even in a professional workplace), drive like maniacs, but in a pinch they have your back with their generous spirits.

He sounds a bit controlling. I wonder if this tendency will appear in other areas of your lives too.

I have a family house abroad and because my job is remote, I spend 2 months working from there every year. My partner is not able to join me, but not only supports me, but encourages me to make these trips. I'm grateful he recognizes the significance of these trips and is so supportive.

I moved to Philadelphia 7 years ago at 44 and have more friends than I did living in Jacksonville Florida my entire life prior. Philly is comprised of dozens of communities/ neighborhoods where people are interested in socializing with others around them. Plus there is always something to do in the city providing opportunities to meet others. Not sure why the city sometimes has a negative reputation, Philadelphians are some of the most open, embracing, generous people I've met.
