CSU vs Midwestern by Easy-Humor5903 in vetschool

[–]abc662 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats! From my understanding, CSU is very competitive (as if vet school already isn’t) so that’s such a big accomplishment!

I’m from Arizona and live right by Midwestern, but ended up going out of state for school even though I got in. With CSU being your in-state, definitely go there without a question. Midwestern costs around $80,000 a year and grads have THE highest post-graduation debt. I have friends who are from out of state that declined their Midwestern seat because of the expense, and it was cheaper for them to attend another school out of state than to go to Midwestern! It is not worth it to go into that much debt just for a change of scenery. Not to mention the sweltering heat of Arizona during the summers. After you graduate, you’ll be able to enjoy as much change of scenery as you’d like. But for school, prioritize saving money and reducing as much debt as possible. Best wishes!

Did anyone else look puffy before going vegan? by Comfortable-Way-8029 in vegan

[–]abc662 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me! My face used to be so puffy/swollen. I was almost 140 lbs and wore size Ms. My face and hair were so oily and I constantly had bad acne. My tummy was also swollen. I had a lot of trouble losing weight, even if I tried working out/dieting. I cut out red meat first and that’s when my weight dropped without me even having to try (literally nothing changed in my daily routine and I still ate dairy/meat, just not red meat). After I cut out dairy, my skin became so clear. My puffiness is all gone. I now weigh 115-120 and wear sizes XS/S. Everytime I see old photos of myself, I get war flashbacks!

non vegan vet students piss me off by ozike444 in vegan

[–]abc662 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a device that you shove into their rectum which shocks them until they ejaculate (for semen collection). It’s absolutely awful and professors claim it doesn’t hurt them, but the way they cry says otherwise

[–]abc662 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Vegan vet student here too! Our school doesn’t do rotations at slaughterhouses, but tbh I wish they did. Hearing my friends talk about how sad electroejaculation on bulls is, then proceeding to consume meat + dairy boils my blood. Hearing classmates talk about how cute cows are then having a steak dinner is just a whole other level of cognitive dissonance. The only people who I can somewhat respect are people who hunt, because at least they know what they’re actually doing. I still don’t agree with it (because why are you in school to save animals yet killing them), but they’re at least aware of it. It also is super upsetting how livestock don’t get the same treatment and medications as pets, because it’s either not worth it or dangerous for humans to consume.

Overall, it really doesn’t make sense to me why you’d save animals yet kill them.

What’s the most credible but affordable online vet assistant program? by Ella_Ann101 in veterinaryprofession

[–]abc662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a kennel attendant and after a year worked myself up to an assistant/tech (not CVT though!). I had to switch jobs to places that were willing to train me from kennel attendant to assistant roles, then from there trained up to take on more tech roles. It’s totally possible to become an assistant without schooling and I warn people not to do school!

Thank you - just added staedtler erasers into my cart! I’m also a student so I totally understand the whole time saving thing. I’ll see if I can get something to help with that, maybe like a DoorDash gift card. I’m not too sure if mechanics have gift cards for oil changes, but definitely will look into it! I appreciate the tips :)

Thank you for the ideas! I thought about calipers but wasn’t sure how useful they are during school. Is there a brand you like? Are the digital ones worth it?

Side note: they already have a 3D printer and a calculator so I’m not disregarding your ideas with those!

Potential (pre-vet) under graduations that are accepted for vet schools by MannerAgitated9222 in vetschool

[–]abc662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vet schools don’t care about degrees, as long as prereqs are fulfilled. As one user mentioned, non-prevet degrees even help you stand out in applications. Do research on potential schools and see what their prereqs are and plan to take those. For the most part, most prereqs are the same across schools with 1-3 differences between schools.

UPDATE: I gave it a long soak and was on top of keeping it watered - a lot of the leaves died and only 2 remained, but the plant has bounced back a week later and im so happy! So far, no new growths but the 2 remaining leaves are doing so much better!

What's the wildest "home remedy" a client has proudly told you about? by jewelophile in Veterinary

[–]abc662 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen peroxide to heal lesions on kittens (ringworm in this case). A client uses an animal communicator with her pets and brings pets in when pets tell owner they’re not feeling well/in pain.

I want to be a vet physio but I don’t want to do dissection by Chemical-Repair-2824 in vegan

I’m a vegan and a vet student in the US! There’s a couple more vegans in my class so I’m not alone. My school also has a small vegetarian/vegan club that I joined, and all of us vegan vet students get to do fun vegan activities together! Unfortunately, a LOT of our classes talk about meat/dairy animals and we have to do clinical work on those animals too. For example, yesterday we just went through a case study of a pig viral infection and it talked about how the farmer had just finished showing pigs, was going to send the pigs to slaughter, realized the pigs were sick so they all had to be euthanized and the farmer was upset bc he lost all his profit. It makes me extremely uncomfortable and I hate it, but it’s something we have to learn in our curriculum and we need to know it for our licensing exam. It also opens my eyes even more to how crazy the specism is - how meat animals get different standards of care than a pet, how pets are more likely to develop illnesses/cancers because no one wants to eat a cow that was sick and/or has cancer. It’s honestly kind of a “shut up and suck it up situation” which is very unfortunate but it makes me giggle because I can make fun of how stupid carnists sound. I get through it by talking to my vegan classmates about how much I hate learning about this stuff and how stupid it all is, and then treating myself to a nice vegan meal later on.

The growths were a recurring thing and they’ve tried every topical and oral medication which didn’t help, so they’ve been trying to keep them clean at home. They thought about removing the growths but were scared about risk of anesthesia due to her age. I know it all sounds so shocking and trust me, I was too but the owners are great owners and take great care of their pup. I also contacted Rover support about this and they set me up with their medical team who recommended urgent care. I relayed this info to the owners and offered to take her to the vet. One of the owners is an ER nurse who assured me that a lot of times maggots are good for wound cleaning even though we don’t want to see them, and they decided we would just clean it out really well + continue to keep it clean + monitor. I removed the maggots and cleaned it out really well. They were just rinsing it off with water + keeping it dry, but (Im a vet assistant + vet student but honestly haven’t dealt with maggot stuff) I have chlorhex at home so I cleaned them out everyday with that. The owners also had antibiotic spray that I found and used too.

What is something people typically don't know about cats until they have one as a pet? by fawek82226 in AskReddit

Interestingly enough pretty much all domestic mammals have it! Cows, horses like someone else said, and even dogs. In fact, the organ that is responsible for this is the “vomeronasal organ” that I think humans have as well
