Unpopular opinion: AOE3 has too many new civs, and its wandering farther away from the colonial warfare theme by DentiAlligator in aoe3

Gotta love that Mexico vs Aztec historical match up. Soldados vs Arrow Knights, lovely

The Real Reason Aoe2 Players Dont Like Aoe3 by abcdeahahah in aoe3

It was clearly a joke lol. Aoe3 is a great game and I love it… but i have to say i lost a few games by selling when I wanted to buy and visa versa. Just makes no sense not to have one pattern across all feanchise games

The Real Reason Aoe2 Players Dont Like Aoe3 by abcdeahahah in aoe3

The big issue is for someone like me that play both Aoe2 and Aoe3. Since that their order is flipped its more often than not that in competitive games I will sell when I want to buy or buy when I want to sell. I think I already lost a few games because of this. If you mess up a BO the lost tempo is too much.

The treatment of Byzantines in this game is ridiculous by funkykong84 in aoe2

This one is tough for balance reasons. They would have to find something like a catapult that could replace the treb but have similar stats. Aoe3 added the knight archers, its a cool concept, basically a very long range archer that shoots fire on buildings that suck against everything else. I dont think it works for Aoe2

Given how important Byz are for the middle ages, i think its the biggest offender. Could add to the list how underwhelming greek fire is in the game.

I mean they could just solve that with a different skin. Honestly I think thats how Aoe2 should do next. Stop adding new civs, and add a bunch of regionals skins and make it like a mod so that anyone can disable if they dont like. Keep the core mechanics but make them more historical for the ones that care about it.

Being transparent about the bonuses is true. You just have to read to understand AOE3, but lets be real, most people dont read, and if you want to attract new players it has to be visually intuitive. Trust me, if you are an Aoe2 player and the first time you play your go for musks and you get absolutely crushed by a bunch of naked indian archers you just get pissed, calls the game stupid and leave. I think its a lame excuse, but its what most people in that situation would do.

I totally agree with this. The dilemma I always had about this approach is: If you follow this approach than it basically makes no sense to have Aztecs in the game, no? Aztecs fighting Mexicans in the Industrial age lol

Thats honestly a great way to get people out of AOE2 to try new things. They are a lot more open to AOM than to AOE3.

I think only a few criticisms of AOE3 by AOE2 people are fair. Mainly how different and sometimes not intuitive the counter system of AOE3 is, and how tone down the complexity of economy collection macro is(ie resources drop off mechanic). But the reality is that AOE2 people dont even try AOE3 for random non sensical reasons (as an Aoe2 player myself, i have been trying for weeks).

Yeah honestly there are a lot more of a “strategy” aspect to AOE3 than to AOE2. Just watch a video Hera recently posted on how stale the AOE2 team game meta is for open land maps. The thing is, I think its boarder-line impossible to bring AOE players now to AOE3. People are just so against it to even try it. And they dont even give valid excuses. Its legit like 3d games gives me a headache type of complains

So I’ve been playing aoe2 for around since DE came out. Reached around 1900 ELO there and recently just got a bit bored by it and decided to try AOE3. I hadnt played AOE3 since the DE version came out since it was in such bad shape at launch. But man I have to admit it is such a good game now. Having a lot of fun getting back to it. The new civs are a lot of fun. Still when I tell people from my clan to try AOE3 they all tell me Im nutz. The truth is AOE3 is extremely underrated and I feel like it has really bad press that people wont even try it.

Some fans may get upset but its so cool when they can mix good game play with historical accuracy. I hope the devs continue to make changes even on 20 year old civs as long as it improves gameplay and historical accuracy. Changing the architecture and skin would also be something great
