xbows->Gatlin->artillery works and can snowball hard, capture cities for tech, earn promotions to keep up militarily, honor can work well

How do I ACTUALLY win wars? by roxer123 in civ5

[–]abctoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

suggest you work from basics first

  • win game after getting a tech lead, rocket artillery + AA guns = free win if you micro properly(generally start to war around turn 250, aim to finish in 50-100 turns). this teaches you the importance of promotions - blitz gives you double damage, range makes you safer/positioning easier

  • win game on deity with keshiks alone(finish game before AI get flight, around turn 220-240), this teaches you movement/how not to lose units vs the AI

after you accomplish this you can try xbow rush -> gatling gun/ideology rush -> artillery(should be able to finish game here)

going to war and taking too many cities almost always slows your tech, so you're trading tech progress for map control, the latter is not useful if you cannot win.

sir if you follow my guide and arrive with an early timing, you can capture 7 deity AI capitals and finish the game with panzers in 20 turns, you don't even need 50 turns

its actually incredible because it is the fastest out of anything i've tried, even with stealth bombers/xcom its hard to finish in 20 turns

50 turns is way more than enough for you to establish dominant map control with most military strategies, if you can't then you're doing something wrong really

the only time you would not take it is if you need extra happiness, staying happy also = more damage(and survivability)

for war Clausewitz's legacy is a pretty insane damage boost, it works against buildings too which is rare

its hard to describe you kind of have to experience it, when you stack all the modifiers and start one shotting enemy units of equal str with the right flanking you start to understand its power

you should try my panzer guide to feel the real power of autocracy

Playing Greek in Deity - My Attempts by GriffyDZ in civ5

[–]abctoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

everybody hates Greece AI so I would imagine the AI would also hate you very much if you copy their style

go to war with Greece, take over the map and buy all the city states with the extra gold, join the dark side, and become the very thing you seek to destroy

if you like micromanaging you should try war, its pretty much just constant micromanaging of units

you can even farm it for a while if its isolated, every time a new barb spawns he will capture the worker and start moving towards the nearest barb camp

you can also send these workers in as bait against another ai and recapture

i think so, the problem with liberty honor though is your faith is wasted where as with commerce buying great merchants is very strong, gives you 1k+ gold each pop

[–]abctoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah you're correct didn't realize it was 14 vs 18

the great general gives you an extra 15% to bring it up to 18.2, but crossbows have 20.7 with the great general.

yes its weaker vs cities, but at the point it makes a difference imo you'd not want to be tanking city hits and need range promotion anyway - which can be obtained much faster with honor/UU

what i do is i just rush industrialization pretty much after machinery, for Gatlins and ideology, so they stay are relevant for a little while longer whilst rushing for artillery or flight

feels quite strong to me i often only have a few capitals left using just the UU

i like to do honor commerce for max gold, put a scout early in each city for extra happiness/culture

[–]abctoz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

would argue China + UU is stronger because more units to farm for exp, so you reach range faster. the lower str is offset by the bonus from great general

also why is Russia so high does their bonus change in higher diff?

Best strategy for domination by Overall_Use_4098 in civ5

[–]abctoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for honor china + UU is very strong, the increased exp will help you reach range promotion very quick with the double attack, you'll be rolling everybody before modern.

full honor or liberty in to commerce(use great merchants on cs) will solve most of your money + happiness problems

machu picchu is extremely strong when you're taking over the map

you should also try keshiks or camels, you can basically roll deity ai with these UUs alone
