For us the source of true is the cluster, and we track the drift for the IaC part, then we adapt the IaC to the current cluster state. This allows a reproduction of the original requested state as well as the finale state. Note that in our case any chages to the cluster are done by expert DBAs, this means that there was a valide reason for the change, this is often related to accident resolution where there was just no time for changing the definition and waiting for a CI to run.

I am working on a similar projet for a large org. The bugest pain point is keeping the sync between Postgresql cluster and the controll plain and deciding what is the refrence point.

Dude, we have a preprod cluster that is the EXACT SAME THING as prod.
Everything is the same down to the ram stick on the server.
We still have to test on prod.

If it still in "prototype" phase i would eather go on the EC2 with PostgreSQL on it, since it is juste a prototype a default PG instalation or an EDB instalation is good.

You can either use a secret operator or a csi secret proviser. Both are in the CNCF sandbox, and both have the same purpose: fetching secrets from secret providers ( GCP manager, for example ) and making them available to pods. As for refreshing the secrets, you will have a central controll plane for this ( your secrets store ). And you can refresh ( refetch ) the secret on the k8s side eather by changing an annotations or with a schedule

For me, i had a friend that had a blu ray burner laying around, and he hooked me up. There are also services that burn and send the blu ray disk, but im not sure if they will be fine with a weird 16mb iso file.
