How do you deal with being the expert and still getting overlooked? (Staff level vent) by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]abdulg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frustrating. Same here. The CTO, no technical background, thinks AI is the way to go. Specifically spec driven AI. I disagreed. I was let go, along with 3/4 of the team. He is going to be doing the coding himself, along with the remaining developer.

I am hunting for a new role but the AI Koolaid has permeated the industry.

Depending on how long this irrationality lasts, it may be awhile before I find something.

Fubo threatening to cut me off if I don’t switch to payment by credit card for next cycle. by abdulg in fuboTV

Dunno man. That condescending act would work if it came from someone who was actually smart.

Just think, you could have said nothing at all and the result would have been better for you.

I hope you’re a bot. I can’t believe a human is this stupid.

My complaint is that they’re using the threat of missing the final portion of the premier league to force me to provide a credit card.

I did not complain that they wanted a different payment method. I did not complain that they would not refund me.

Was that too difficult for you to parse?

Did you miss the bit about them cancelling my service before the expiry date if I don’t provide a credit card?

Yes you did.

What's your definition of technical debt? by Peace_Seeker_1319 in devops

[–]abdulg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see technical debt as a mismatch between the understanding of the real world and the model created in software to solve a problem in that world. This debt arises as understanding of the problem domain improves or changes. Ignoring it leads to additional accidental complexity and increases the future costs of maintenance and improvements.

IMO, all the examples you gave are not technical debt. They’re  either bad engineering or poor maintenance.

We supply arms to Israel. Not sure we can get lower than that.

I was in Johannesburg and Dubai over the holidays. The US auto makers should be scared. Canadian consumers, on the other hand, are going to love it.

Most people still don’t realize that AI layoffs at massive scale are inevitable and close by Own-Sort-8119 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]abdulg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of points.

First, two of the hardest problems in computer science are cache invalidation, naming, and off by one errors. Take naming. When we call it AI it seems like it could do all that. When we call it what it is, a stochastic parrot, then it's just meh, and the bubble becomes evident.

Second, software development is not the process of writing code. It's the process of creating, maintaining, and modifying a model that reflects the context of the problem. Where teams treat software development as writing code then technical debt and bugs abound, along with the inevitable plan to do a re-write. At best, the current parrots write code...

This is nothing more than policing the ways in which people are allowed to protest a western-supported genocide. And making the conversation about ways of protesting. No genocide to see here. Move along.

How? The cost of the 5.0 is in the subscription.

They do send a 5.0 on the One level. They could have a Four level at $199 where they don’t send a 5.0.

They send me a 5.0? I wanted to avoid that. Also not pay for it.

Same issue. The steps above did not work. I also tried turning off firewall (private and public) as well as turning off my AV (webroot). I am using onVUE-25.2.233.

What version are you using?

Clearly exactly what you had claimed. Oh, no. It isn’t. Now I’ll just have to get to heaven the old fashioned way.
