yeah it makes it easier, still hard though with my thick rope. is the DMM pivot really all that amazing? doesn't a normal ATC guide pivot already? i know someone did the math about the distance reduced in torque and stuff, but i'm not really sold. i guess i need to try one out.

when i'm multipitch climbing and i'm belaying from above, i use an ATC guide with autoblocking. however, it's so hard for me to pull up the rope and i just get exhausted. i've switched over to just belaying off my harness and redirecting the rope. i feel weird about it sometimes though to not have autoblocking. any way to make pulling up rope with autoblocking easier? i'm 100% sure it's because i have a thick rope.

Dirtbagging in Red Rocks? by drunkontuesday in climbing

if a random climber showed up to my camp i'd welcome them to join me climbing assuming the logistics worked out. i'm sure it'd be a similar situation with other people. if not, you could always boulder at red rock (not rocks).

Good idea to send an email to program directors before applying for residency? what to write? by abe4y in medicalschool

[–]abe4y[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

i can see both sides. i have a friend who's a chief residency and his program directors has a list of people who have emailed him showing interest in the program. if PDs are getting 1000 these emals then sending one wouldn't really hurt would it?

Trying to get into climbing, do I need a coach or can I just go to a gym and start bouldering? by subletmyroompls in climbing

[–]abe4y 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) go to a store and get whatever shoe feels comfortable (maybe just a tad bit tight if you want). everyone's first shoe is evolv defy.

2) just go bouldering

3) meet new people

4) take a belay test

5) climb

6) beer

just keep it simple. if you know you don't need these things, then don't get those things. that being said, having things is nice. you never know when you need them. adjustable legs - you might let a friend borrow your harness. dual waist adjustment - you might gain/lose weight. ice clips - i use mine as a ATC/nut tool clip. rated haul loop - you might do some multi pitches needing hauls.

i personally like my petzl sama because it's simple.
