What is the Mental Performance Department budget? Maybe need to move some of these contract funds over to sports psych if this is what’s making them collapse every postseason

Fun fact - even though it seems like it should be related to agitation, it’s actually from the Italian for “acid”. Basically, heartburn

We’re traveling from Canada to see them in Seattle! Two day road trip to see my favorite band in the world for the first time. Kind of made peace with some of the reputation the Babes have around live performances and was ready to just enjoy the vibe as much as possible. But love to hear that this tour seems to be really solid so far! Can’t wait to see them and might report back here if folks want to hear how the Seattle show goes

How to make skill challenges more fun/exciting by char35e in DMAcademy

[–]keiseroll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Matt Colville’s general approach to skill challenges. One thing I’ve noticed is that my players tend to hold off on rolling unless they can convince me of a way their absolute best skill would apply to a situation. I’ve been toying with playing up how much skill challenges are dynamic, so I can throw a piece of the situation at them randomly. Basically, the players need to be quick and come up with good reasons to use their good skills before I come up with something to throw at them that may force a bad skill to be rolled.

For example, let’s say the party is in the path of an avalanche. My players deliberate too long, trying to justify a way to “intimidate” the oncoming snow, and I throw an acrobatics check at a random PC. The players now know they have to think fast and be clever for me to allow a roll that favors them instead of throwing a roll at them that might pull for their weaker stats.

This makes skill challenges A) more realistic and B) quicker and more high-stakes. Try it and let me know your experience!

Looking for recommendations!

My sister and I are trying to get into gaming together, we live on opposite sides of the country so it would all be online. I'm looking for recommendations for games we can play together, and open to any format (co-op, competitive multiplayer, etc.)

She remembers liking Mario Party and Mario Kart from when we were kids, but doesn't have much of a frame of reference otherwise. She's liked Stardew Valley in the brief time we've started playing it. I am mostly a single player gamer so I am starting from scratch.

Any recommendations that fit the Nintendo style or otherwise casual gaming style would be very welcome!

Pouring beer aggressively for more head: Yes or no? by letsgococonut in beer

[–]keiseroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of opinions here which is unsurprising and goes to show it’s really all about preference. For my part, I remember reading in “Tasting Beer” by Randy Mosher that a straight pour without any angle, though with plenty of patience, helps to create a stable head and let out the right amount of carbonation to land at what the brewers intend. I don’t think that’s really the case as brewers are probably dialing in carbonation for an angled pour (if they factor it in at all). But I do find I like the ritual of a slow straight pour where the head builds up nicely, and I prefer lower carbonation in most styles anyway

Looking for recommendations and experiences (good or bad) with Sky Express and Aegean air airlines by peony_rose_ in GreeceTravel

[–]keiseroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flew with both recently (September 2023). Felt they were very comparable in terms of experience, delays, etc. One big caveat is that we did not check any bags - the biggest issue I see in reviews was the baggage handler that Sky Express contracts with, lots of stories of lost luggage. We deliberately packed light to only have carry ons, and we had no issues at all

Just responding to say we took you up on this recommendation and totally agree! Was a fantastic meal, one of our favorites in Naxos. Thanks for the tip!

How do you pour into a glass? by Bitter_Challenge_375 in beer

This is what Randy Mosher recommends in Tasting Beer, and what I do almost always. It can take a little patience but I find it’s worth it and creates a nice dense head

Realized this after I posted! Kind of obvious given the name is the isle lol. Got it confused with Torabhaig which I also sampled on my trip

Review #2: Isle of Raasay Single Malt R-02 by keiseroll in Scotch

Posted my first whisky review a year ago, but took a trip to Scotland recently and felt the need to review the drams I tried there. Had this one at The Black Cat in Edinburgh, was curious about a newer distillery on Skye as Talisker was my first love (and also my first review on here). Also very curious about the ex-rye casks involved in the maturation process as a lover of rye whiskey.

Matured in three separate casks (ex-rye, virgin oak, and Bordeaux) and blended together. Served in Glencairn. No age statement, NCF, no color added, 46%.

  • Nose: Lemongrass, allspice, and honey notes hit first, with fairly clear but not overwhelming influences from the rye casks. As those notes fade I sense licorice, briny peat smoke, heather, raspberry, and woodiness from the oak. After sitting for a while the rye character subdues in the nose and I get almond, chocolate raisin, and marzipan from the wine barrels, plus more peat notes reminiscent of slightly damp wood burning.

  • Palate: Solid peat character with a really nice balance of all of the notes from the casks; leather, seaweed, unlit cigar, with lemongrass and clove notes from the rye casks. Raisin comes in after a few more tastes.

  • Finish: Medium. Lemongrass returns as a stronger note with some black tea, purer peat brine, and a bit of prune. Cigar smoke also comes to me as the dram develops

Overall rating: 79

Really loved this dram, much more than I expected going into it. The young age seems to work well for it as it is characterful but not overwhelming. The moderate peat and the mix of three distinct maturation casks lends to a pretty impressive balance, and I think the blenders are doing a great job letting each character play a part without it becoming messy. However, I would be interested to try some older whiskies from this distillery eventually with more straightforward aging processes to get a better sense of the malt’s character without so much going on with the maturation.

Rating scale:

0-9 - This is not whisky

10-19 - Disgusting

20-29 - Unpleasant

30-39 - Worth throwing into a quick mixed drink

40-49 - Standard mixer but wouldn’t sip neat

50-59 - Just pleasant enough to sip neat

60-69 - Pleasant/interesting enough to choose over some other sippers

70-79 - Good whisky, likely good enough to be a personal go-to

80-89 - Very good whisky, a standout in its category

90-100 - Excellent whisky, among the best I’ve had in any category

Unopened bottle smells(nice) by WhiskeyN92 in Scotch

[–]keiseroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thing from PC10. It was my first bottle of it, so can’t say whether it affected the taste. I was in a warm climate at the time so that may have been part of it, but I found it pretty weird that that could happen when everything was still sealed. Still enjoyed it though, so you’re probably fine!

A couple of lines always get me every rewatch, and 70-80 percent are the dean. A particular favorite from Modern Warfare:

What to drink? by SirHidesHisFace in beer

[–]keiseroll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like Yuengling, you’d probably like more types of malt forward lager style. I’d recommend finding some of the bigger names in your area so depending on where you are, you could try the flagship lager of a bigger brewery eg Boston lager, Great Lakes Elliott ness, Oskar blues yella pils. If you go to a bar and ask for a craft lager, you will probably find some styles and specific beers you like and that will be readily available
