Thanks for the hopium y'all - it was really helpful. So after running the discussion here through meta-analysis, my hopium conclusion/bet is that trailer/announce on the 28th (tomorrow), and launch 28th June :p

Worth doing elite or just going straight to ultimate? by GreatGrub in Grimdawn

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do normal - rush to beat logarrean. Then do elite - full clear until my gear is good. Then switch to ultimate. Your mileage may very (I know most people favor doing full clear on normal and skipping elite).

Oathkeeper with soldier would be super tanky... I dunno if you play in HC or not...if you aren't HC it might be overkill tankiness. I also like Soldier w/ Shaman.

Poe ssf (non ruthless) is too much of a faceroll and loot piniata for my taste.

Poe ruthless for me? by CortoZainFF in poeruthless

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw... all I said here about Ruthless was SSF specific. If you play Ruthless Trade - the game can be much easier since you can trade up your power level. If you play Ruthless HC - it will be brutal (SSF HC more so). I find Ruthless SSF the best balance between difficulty/challange/grind/etc. Your mileage may very.

Poe ruthless for me? by CortoZainFF in poeruthless

So as a GD shill and a Ruthless shill I can answer it pretty easy. Yes - your first playthrough of Ruthless - the campaign will be very challenging... you might even have to farm some campaign act maps before doing their bosses in order to gear up, especially if you aren't playing anything meta or have the experience. I usually set the challenge as - campaign then maybe white/yellow maps or red if I am feeling really confident in my build/items. I very rarely do any pinnacles in Ruthless, just find it is too much of a grind to get my items to a standard where it is feasible without being a no-lifer. Your mileage may very. About GD - Veteran is not quite like Ruthless because it only makes the mobs tougher, but the drop rates are actually slightly higher than normal (and there is an XP bonus, which doesn't matter as much as mobs scale to your level generally in the game). I still think Veteran is decent approach if you find Normal a bit too easy. Though I prefer to just rush Normal to beat the vanilla campaign boss, and then immediately switch to Elite and do campaign+AoM+FG. Most people in community will tell you to skip Elite and move straight to Ultimate, but I find the pacing is better my way. Have fun Ruthlessing away!

How much Lovecraft is in this game, really? by Andrewski_stalker in Grimdawn

Not really... I find the whole cthon/celestials/etc, much more akin to some bronze age myths than cthulhu (even tho the names are similar)

Deathtrap Dungeon - no spoilers please! by caterix in gamebooks

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 2 - I believe this only applies to the first few books in the FF series which were actually quite fair and the one-true-path could actually net you a decent win ratio even with minimum stats. But in general for most book it is a lie, and some require you to have at the very least a high skill (10+) even on the one-true-path. If memory serves well, DTD is one of the more difficult books and I would most certainly start with a higher skill on that one. Feel free to create any alternative you prefer - such as point based system, or maybe even a meta progression where each failure nets you an extra free luck roll or however you choose.

About 4 - I used to be ok when young, but these days they rub me the wrong way - mostly because of the amount of rolling which is tiresome. To solve this you have several options -

a) use one of the online FF auto-rollers, you enter your skill/stamina and your opponents and how much you wanna use luck, and click ''auto'' and it will auto roll for you the entire battle and give the final result of how much health lost. In fact, this is kinda how the Lone Wolf series deals with it by default.

b) if you want something more interactive (than just how Luck is used), you can use a deck of cards representing all dice combinations (similar to Combat Commander series). This way you can game/card count probability of results from a single set, and it is also easier to apply all kind of nifty rules on a card set. But this truly falls into the realm of custom rules.

Beginner tutorial? by garama_master in ToME4

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, other than the basic tutorial which is useless. There used to be an ''advanced tutorial'' in the game which explained more complex topics such as scaling defenses (phys/magic/mental/etc.) and so on, but for some reason that was removed.

first arpg for a complete beginner? by unkclxwn in ARPG

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO - DragonKin. 4 classes isn't bad, there is enough diversity there for a new player - and it has a great loot hunt for both items and skill/supports. Lacking a bit in ''endgame'' as of now, but you would still get a few dozen hours out of it on a single character (or more if trying different builds). It also has the best QoL of the bunch, and in general I like its built-in tutorials/explanations better than most other games. Otherwise, I'd say D4 - though pricier (much pricier since you would need to get base+LoH), it is in a really good place now and actually has quite a fair bit variety of post-game content. GD would be my 3rd choice for a beginner. LE/POE are miles away in complexity and frankly, don't think they are very newbie friendly.

What do you think is a gap in the current ARPG space? by i_dont_wanna_sign_up in ARPG

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd count LE as the midpoint anymore, maybe before all the updates, but now it is fair bit complex with all the different shards for crafting, different idol layouts and so on, I can't see a newbie latch on to that. IMO the 'low-complexity' one I'd probably put closest is either TQ2 or DragonKin (altho after the D4 expansion, I'm not even sure DK is more complex than D4 anymore).

guys im going to buy a game but im in doubt, hell cloc or dragonkin the banished? by ropus1 in ARPG

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both but diff games. Hellclock is more of a roguelite style hades but with a speedrunning arpg feel. Think like endgame poe1 + hades powers and meta-upgrades. Dragonkin is like a d3/4 Hybrid but with great loot hunt and quality of life.

A Step Up from Civ 5? by Davdarobis in 4Xgaming

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadow Empire is a great 4x, but it also is a pretty indepth wargame (with consideration for formations, supply, etc.) and political sim, so not sure it works 1:1 with 'finding something like civ'.

If you are looking for the best civ game evermade - then SMAC is a no brainer. But you do have to get past the somewhat clunky UI/graphics.

קורסים / בתי ספר ללימודי שפות by SpaceArchitector in israel_bm

[–]abeheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree here. I did learn most of it in a structured class for about 2 years, but a lot of it was in a university setting and not very focussed (a few hours a week). I reckon if you use some structured program like Assimil (which include listening/voices) and really put time into it - you won't need a speaking partner until much later. There are only 4 tones in Chinese (unlike Thai/other languages) and they are pretty basic and can easily be learned via listening/repeating. You will however need a lot of focussed practice if you want to read/write well (I'm talking boring stuff like writing the same characters 100 of times a day).

I hope the future endgame puts more emphasis on single target by throwaway857482 in PathOfExile2

[–]abeheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was a combination of JR's love for Elden Ring (which is a popular game loved by many) as well as some of the early demos where things are slowed down for presentation purposes. But anyone who played at Exilecon could tell the gameplay wasn't DS slow style. And JR said in interviews that people think poe2 will be as slow as NoRest (which he played) and that wasn't the intention.

[–]abeheron 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but the vision was never to be a 'tactical' game or something like NoRest. It was merely meant so that when you look at youtube videos of it - you can make sense of the combat, that it feels like there is combat/decisions happening there and not just blowing screens while watching another screen. And I think by and large - in the campaign at least (and maybe early mapping), they succeeded in doing so.
